It is the envy of all the other dog breeds, a database that provides a tremendous amount of information and is used daily by breeders, stud dog owners, and everyone else in the golden retriever fancy. Not only is it an easy and convenient way to research pedigrees and print them out, but it also provides space for names of breeders and owners, many health clearances, honorifics, titles, country of origin, registration numbers, COIs (Coefficient of Inbreeding) and more. There are links to five generation pedigrees, longevity pedigrees, siblings and offspring. Test breedings can easily be entered to check for COIs which are run every month. A quick look at the Change History shows how often data is input, particularly with regard to health clearances and titles earned. How many hours have you spent investigating this wealth of information? How often have you entered your dog's most recent title, or your new puppy's AKC name? How lucky are we that Amy Raby started this database, and beautifully maintains it, along with her excellent administrators! Inside this issue: But there is a mystery that I have not yet been able to unravel surrounding this wonderful tool. And that is: Why do only a small percentage of the dogs have a Date of Death (DOD) and an even smaller percentage have Cause of Death (COD) listed in the fields provided? A quick investigation shows that this not only applies to "pet homes" or dogs who have never been bred, but is equally true of dogs who have been bred multiple times! Some of the most heavily used sires and influential dams have no DOD and/or COD entered. And some of the most important and highly regarded members of the Golden retriever community have neglected or chosen not to enter this information. One can understand how this may be true for dogs who died prior to the implementation of the database where in some cases the breeders or owners are no longer living themselves. In that case the information may unfortunately be lost forever. But everywhere you look when researching a pedigree, you can find dogs who have passed in the last years with many offspring, often GRCA Outstanding Sires and Dams, who have no longevity information listed. I propose that the only way this "mystery" can ever be solved is when we recognize the vital importance of longevity information as part of the pedigree of our dogs. While not everyone will agree, in my opinion there is nothing more important than longevity (followed closely by temperament) in our beloved Goldens. Winning titles in our chosen venues conformation, agility, obedience, fieldwork or what have you means little if we neglect the importance of breeding and choosing puppies for long, healthy lives. Because any important action begins at "home," I implore all NORCAL GRC members to spend some time in k9data.com: find all the dogs you have ever bred or owned, and fill in missing information, particularly about date of death and cause of death. Consider it your obligation toward the Golden retriever breed as a whole. To those of you have who have already done this, I applaud you! The information entered into the database will be used for many years to come, and if not entered will be lost forever. The future of our beloved breed is in our hands. 2 GOLDEN NOTES Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, MX, MXJ Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras NORCAL GRC has such a wealth of talent in our membership. A new section of Golden Notes will highlight those diverse talents. I couldn t think of anyone I wanted to highlight in our inaugural edition more than the person responsible for getting me into the crazy world of Golden Retrievers Jocelyn Lewis of Shalimar Golden Retrievers. Jocelyn has been a member for over 20 years, breeds, and shows in conformation. In the last several years, Jocelyn has taken advantage of the AKC Therapy Dog titles, being the first NORCAL GRC member to earn multiple therapy dog titles on her Goldens. Jocelyn is a volunteer with the Valley Humane Society in their Comfort Canine therapy dog program. I asked Jocelyn to provide us Page 2 with some information about therapy dogs and the work she does. I hope you enjoy and are as inspired as I am about the incredible powers our canine partners have. If you know of a member who you would like to nominate to be part of our Member Spotlight, please send me their name(s) and I will get in contact with them. WHAT IS A THERAPY DOG? From working with a child who is learning to read to visiting a senior in assisted living, therapy dogs and their owners work together as a team to improve the lives of other people. Therapy dogs are dogs who go with their owners to volunteer in settings such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. People frequently ask me how their dog can become a therapy dog. There is a common misconception that therapy dogs need to be a certain breed, or raised to be therapy dogs from a very young age. On the contrary, therapy dogs come in all breeds and sizes! A therapy dog can provide healing to his or her companion or family, as well as hundreds of other people in a therapeutic setting whether a hospital, a school or a retirement home. There is no breed requirement for therapy dogs it s really all about temperament. Therapy Dogs must: Be well tempered Be in excellent health Not shed excessively Well socialized (exposed to many environments) Love to cheer others up! Want to Be a Therapy Dog Team? Find a reputable therapy-dog organization. Undergo an evaluation and a training course. Volunteer! Therapy dogs are not service dogs. Service dogs are dogs who are specially trained to perform specific tasks to help a person who has a disability. An example of a service dog is a dog who guides an owner who is blind, or a dog who assists someone who has a physical disability. Service dogs stay with their person and have special access privileges in public places such as on planes, restaurants, etc. Therapy dogs, the dogs who will be earning the AKC Therapy Dog title, do not have the same special access as service dogs.

GRF funds were For information about PU, follow this link: not available to pay for Dr. Townsend s flight and accommodations. There was also the logistics challenge of finding a central venue, with space for a seminar and dark exam room, which would attract 100+ dogs over 2 days. The focus at this time will be to provide members with the latest information on GRPU and to list local ophthalmologist familiar sand knowledgeable about the disease NATIONAL SPECIALTY: a. 4 Page 4 9th Annual CCA Huge Success! VOLUME 44, ISSUE IV Our ninth annual CCA event was another success! On July 27 we had 21 entrants presented to our friendly evaluators Debbie Claussen, Bruce McLean, and Judy Slayton Bachofner. All 21 Goldens earned their CCA titles! And once again, I could not have done it without my wonderful committee and all the volunteers who pitched in and worked hard to make it the stress-free, upbeat, educational, and fun event that it is. First thanks go to my main committee members: Christine Hsu who took over as event secretary from 8-year veteran Toni Maita (although she has worked with Toni in the past, she took it on solo this year)! She was assisted by her dear husband Don for much of the day. Also, the event would not be the success it was without Valerie Anderson coordinating the volunteer stewards, making sure everything ran smoothly and all the paperwork handled by the evaluators properly. Valerie also brought two yummy salads made by her husband Barry for lunch! Which brings me to food: Diane Nicholas, whose girl Mulligan earned her CCA that day, prepared and contributed a fabulous lunch with beautifully presented sandwich fixings! And a very sweet ending indeed was contributed by Allyssa Mader, cookie maker extraordinaire. Thanks to Ann Brown for helping me provide morning hospitality and drinks for all! Heartfelt appreciation go out to all the volunteers (besides those already named) who acted as stewards for the evaluators, helped stack and gait dogs, helped with hospitality set up and clean up, and anything else that needed to be done: Ann Brown, Linda Lang, Terry Southard, Jennifer Bluette, Allyssa Mader, Karen Swanson, and Corina Marx. I believe for the 9th year in a row member June Smith was our wicketer, measuring the dogs, and was the soul of patience with the wiggly ones! Thanks, June! Last but not least, our fabulous resident photographer, Steve Southard, not only got great group and candid pictures but is always such a cheerful presence to have at any event! We love you, Steve! This CCA was yet another example of club members coming together, working hard, and having a great time. If you haven't done it lately give it a try! We have our Beat the Heat workshop and club specialty coming up as well as agility trials over Labor Day. All events still need volunteers!
