Between storms, freezing temperatures and summer like temperatures, I think the weather is doing a pretty good job in keeping us on our toes. Tracking season is pretty much over, but conformation, agility, obedience, and field are never ending! Training is always on. We are still looking to finalize some more details before we actually put in the bid for the 2016 GRCA National, but plan on it! It s a huge endeavor and requires all of us to help. What are you going to volunteer to do? Eileen Oshiro NORCAL GRC President Inside this issue: VOLUME 41, ISSUE II SPRING MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT The May General meeting for NorCal will be held in conjunction with the Picnic Trial which will be on Sunday May 29 of Memorial Day Weekend at Jones Lake. 2 GOLDEN NOTES Editor s Bark Vines of Gold Page 2 Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, OA, OA Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras Over my Spring Break as a teacher, I had the opportunity to attend the NORCAL Golden Retriever Rescue event, Vines of Gold. This was a new event for NGRR and was spear-headed by Shirlee Thomas. The day was beautiful, the food delicious, and the attendance was great; over 150 people and almost as many golden retrievers! In support of the K9 Cancer Walk, 50% of the net proceeds will be shared between the top four walk teams represented at the event. The K9 Cancer Walk is sponsored by the Morris Animal Foundation and there will be two walks in the California area in The first happens on May 7th in Elk Grove and another will happen in Los Gatos on Oct 9th so there is time to team together. Very few of us in the Golden Community have not been affected by canine cancer. The efforts by the various organizations to find a cure gives us all hope. Being involved either through participation or donations of the K9 Cancer Walks not only brings much needed attention but funds to support current and future research. And let s not forget our support for NGGR. In 2010, there were over 1300 applications with the placement of almost 240 dogs. The time and effort it takes to foster and place these beautiful animals is priceless. The foster families are the key to successful adoptions. A recent visit to the NGGR website ( showed the many ways help is needed for this much valued organization. Please take some time to visit and help. As a breeder, I never want any of my dogs to end up in Rescue but I very much want Rescue to be around just in case. I walked away from the afternoon of Vines of Gold with an armful of goodies from the silent auction and a renewed comfort, knowing that Rescue is as strong and committed as ever; ready to help those once forgotten. Potential dates would be May 7 (avoid May 8 as it is Mother s Day) May 14, 15 or 21 She will advise which date can be finalized. Usually Nancy Kelly would bring frozen ducks from Nancy Corbin s to the Flyer Day, however, since I am unable to attend the Flyer Day (bitch due to whelp) Debbie will check with Susan Osborn to pick up birds and put them in her freezer in Morgan Hill, then Debbie will pick up. (This has been arranged, birds are in Morgan Hill). Cheryl Baca asked Debbie if she could borrow two Popper Guns to use at a Field Event she is in charge of for the Irish Water Spaniel National Specialty. Cheryl would be totally responsible for the poppers. It was agreed to if a deposit was made on the Poppers. Awards Nancy Kelly brought up a problem this year regarding the awards. More members than usual missed the Dec 15 submission date. It seems since Golden Notes has gone on line, many members don t bother to read it. We put out the awards information in the October issue of Golden Notes. By unanimous agreement we decided to send out an blast 2 weeks prior and one week prior to the closing date for awards in We also discussed changing the closing date to the end of the year since the San Mateo, Salinas, and Oakland shows have changed their dates to the end of the year. However, this does present a problem with being able to tabulate the awards information by Edwina, getting it to Nancy J. Kelly for verification

9 Page 5 From GRCA Field Editor The Field Theme Issue came about in 2007 because of a strong need to acknowledge those members and their Goldens who belonged to the GRC yet who felt a lack of recognition for their maintaining the Golden Retriever as not only a true member of the Sporting Group but as "primarily a hunting dog". That first issue was greeted with an overwhelming outpouring of gratitude for seeing "the Goldens that work in the field" recognized and rewarded for their accomplishments by the Golden community as a whole. One of the biggest factors towards contributing to the initial success and the ongoing popularity of the Field Theme Issue has been the involvement of the GRCA Clubs in taking out ads supporting their own members for their care in maintaining the original purpose behind our breed, the Golden RETRIEVER. Every Golden Club as well as individual Golden owners are invited to take out ads in the Nov/Dec '11 Field Theme Issue of the GRN waving their pom poms for all the Goldens, and in particular their Goldens, who participate in field work from WC/WCX through hunting and hunts tests and up to and including field trials. These do not have to be big ads, just ads of any size or shape to demonstrate that a Golden Retriever is more than just a pretty face. Please don't let your Club be left out. I would appreciate it if you would publish this in your Newsletter so all your members receive a copy of this request. If your Club does not wish to do an ad itself, please encourage your members to take out ads such as their training groups; accomplishments of their individual dogs; or ads showing that form really does follow function and aren't those athletic, beautiful Goldens at their very best when doing their original job, retrieving game. Each year after the Field Theme Issue comes out, the one comment I hear over and over is how refreshing it is to see the support given to the Field Theme Issue by the Golden Clubs. It has contributed to new persons joining the GRCA as well as many seeking out Clubs that will support their belief that a Golden is truly a Retriever and an outstanding Retriever. Thank you for the support you and your Club give to our breed and I hope you will join me in honoring them with an ad in the Field Theme Issue. If there are any questions or if there is any manner in which I can help in this endeavor, please contact me at glendagldnblk@aol.com. Glenda Brown

10 Breeder's Handbook from the American Kennel Club Breeder of Merit Newsletter The Canine Reproductive Cycle: A Complex Biological Process Beginning with proestrus and ending with anestrus, the canine reproductive cycle is a complex biological orchestration of events which must progress in a precise manner to have a successful outcome: healthy puppies. Ovulation, or release of eggs from the ovary, is one of the most important events in the reproductive cycle. It occurs during the second phase of the estrous cycle and can be monitored by blood tests or vaginal cytology. Although this knowledge can give the breeder the most accurate time frame for successful mating, there are still many variables that determine whether puppies will be born. Fertilization and Implantation Once ovulation occurs, the eggs will require 48 hours to mature before they are ready to be fertilized. During this time they remain in the upper portion of the oviduct, or fallopian tube. Gestation begins with the fertilization of an egg, or ovum, by a single sperm cell, or spermatozoon. Once this union occurs, cell division begins and continues at a constant rate. Migration of the developing embryos through the oviducts and into the uterus takes approximately one week. Once they have reached the uterus, they will float in a nourishing fluid secreted by the lining of the uterus for another 14 to 21 days before they implant into the uterine wall. It is vital that the tissues and environment in the oviducts and uterus remain healthy and free from any infection and/or inflammation that could kill either the eggs, sperm, or the developing embryos. When the embryos attach to the uterine wall, this is referred to as implantation, or nidation. Once this is accomplished, cell division continues and further development occurs rapidly. The placenta has many functions nutritive, protective as well as hormonal. After nidation, the fetal and maternal placentas begin to form. In dogs, the blood supplies of the mother and the embryos (and later, the fetuses) do not comingle as they do in humans. They are, however, in close proximity so that nutrients and oxygen can pass from the mother to the baby, and waste from the baby to the mother can be exchanged. In the dog, the placenta forms a complete band of tissue around the developing puppy. This type of placenta is classified as zonary. It secretes a hormone called Relaxin, which is only present during pregnancy. Therefore, its presence in the blood of the female can be used to definitively diagnose pregnancy before ultrasound or radiology is practical. Pregnancy and Progesterone The maintenance of pregnancy is mainly controlled by a hormone called progesterone. In the dog, it is secreted by structures in the ovaries called corpora lutea, or yellow bodies. They are composed of the cells of the follicles that nourished the eggs before ovulation. Progesterone continues to be secreted from the ovaries for approximately two months, regardless of whether the female became pregnant. This can lead to the development of pseudopregnancy, or false pregnancy. The female progresses as though she were actually pregnant. She will assume behaviors associated with imminent whelping, i.e., nesting. She may even develop mammary tissue and make milk. She will usually adopt an inanimate object such as a stuffed toy to nurture. On the contrary, if she actually did become pregnant and the progesterone level drops sharply, the pregnancy will most likely be lost. The Two Distinct Stages of Gestation Embryogenesis During gestation there are two distinct stages that are hallmarked by the rate of development of the future puppies, and the energy needs of the mother. The first is embryogenesis and it consists of the first six weeks of pregnancy. At this time the mother s energy needs do not change significantly. During this stage all the puppy s organ systems are being developed. Cell division and DNA replication are taking place at a phenomenal rate. Eyelids appear at 32 days and the palate closes at 33 days. Individual toes can be seen at 35 days. In addition, the neural, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, digestive, integumentary, and urogenital systems are forming. These events must take place in precise and harmonious progressions to ensure viable, fully developed puppies free from birth defects. If any disruption occurs during this development, results may be catastrophic. For example, if the palate does not fuse at just the right time it will not happen later in gestation. The consequence of this interruption of normal formation is cleft palate. At the end of embryogenesis the future puppies are still very small in comparison with their final birth rate. Progesterone is the main hormone in gestation. The hormone Relaxin can be used to diagnose pregnancy. Growth The second stage of gestation is correlated with the embryos becoming fetuses. It occurs at the beginning of the last three weeks of pregnancy and continues until birth. During this stage the fetuses will gain 75 percent of their birth weight! Subsequently, the mother s energy needs escalate accordingly. Even though development of some organ systems will continue after birth, the fetus is mature enough to survive outside the uterus as a neonate after just 60 to 63 days in the womb!

11 Breeders can support the gestation process, beginning with the estrous cycle, by ensuring their males and females have received proper veterinary care, including appropriate vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and treatment for internal and external parasites. Providing optimal nutrition is vital in all stages of the reproductive cycle. This includes not only gestation and lactation in the female, but also the time between breedings when her body is healing from the previous pregnancy, birth, nursing, and weaning. Proper care and nutrition during this period is crucial, as is the nutrition supplied during the estrous cycle itself. Attention to these factors will optimize a successful pregnancy and subsequent delivery of a healthy litter of puppies. Melinda Fleming, DVM Royal Canin USA, 2011 Congratulations to NORCAL GRC Members AKC Breeder Of Merit Program Dee Dee and Billy Anderson Cheryl Baca Patricia Bass Walker Laura Finco Laura and Vic Franchi Cindy Garcia Laurie Jordan-Fenner Gestation begins from the moment that a spermatozoon penetrates the ovum, after which the first cell divisions begin. Are you an AKC Breeder of Merit? Let us know so you can be added to the Breeder of Merit List for AKC Puppy Referrals. For more information about the AKC Breeder of Merit program and the benefits of the program, go to Con t Board Minutes from page 3 and reformatting, and submitting it to the trophy/engraving dealer. Then it requires getting all the awards back for verification of accuracy a week prior to the banquet in case we need to redo any. This will require further discussion since it also would require changing the banquet date. Not all board members have the capability to produce blasts. Nancy Kelly volunteered to contact Christine Hsu to get that information to all board members so each can issue an blast as necessary. Since attendance has been dropping for the Awards Banquet Dinner/ Meeting we discussed changing it to a Sunday Luncheon. All board members thought this was a good idea to check into for next year. Lunch would be less expensive and members would not be driving late at night. Jeanetta volunteered to check into alternate luncheon locations. Match Terry Southard discussed the Beat the Heat Match will take place on Aug 27, rather than August 13. DNA Testing We briefly discussed Optigen which can now offer the new GR_PRA1test, as well as the ichthyosis test. These tests are expensive but a significant discount is available if done through a clinic. Eileen will look into the possibility of having these tests done at a local clinic. Eileen joined the group about 6:00pm. The meeting ended at about 6:30p, as it was time to attend the banquet. Submitted by Nancy Kelly, Director. 3 rd Annual K9 Cancer Walk Morris Animal Foundation is on a hunt for a cure to canine cancer. Today 63% of golden retrievers over the age of 2 will die with a diagnosis of cancer. Last year the Golden Retrievers To The Rescue team in Elk Grove, CA raised $7,000 for canine cancer research. Our Los Gatos, CA team raised $6,000. We were the #1 team at both walks last year and we were #2 in San Diego in February this year. On May 7 th, we will walk again in Elk Grove. Registration is now open. Team Golden Retriever s To The Rescue is ready! Two golden alumni of Norcal Golden Retriever Rescue have benefited and are survivors today because of the research and treatment realized from one of the studies funded by Morris. Together we can make a difference and find ways to prevent, treat and ultimately cure canine cancer. Con t on page 8
