2 President s Message Hello all Coming off the National Dog Show weekend in Philadelphia, where our breed was well represented by more than twenty (20) gorgeous Pharaoh Hounds in the ring. By the time this SCRIBE is published, it will have aired on Thanksgiving Day, with Summer (Bazinga's a Dream of Spring for Mia, owned by myself and Pam Haig) being awarded a Group 4, being handled by Grahm Miller. Congratulations to all who were there and represented our breed so beautifully. Here is your end of year reminder to complete your health survey on the OFA website if you haven't already done so. In Board of Director's news, the terms of Sheila Hoffman, Jane Hodnett and myself were up for renewal this last voting cycle. After many years of dedication to the BOD, both Sheila and Jane elected to step down from their positions. The nominating committee presented Theresa Harper from CA and Andrea Schokker from MN as new members of the Board of Directors. There were no nominees from the membership. I am happy and honored to remain on the BOD for another term. I want to personally thank and welcome both Theresa and Andrea to the BOD and express appreciation for being willing to serve the PHCA. There are not words adequate to describe the work and energy expended by our outgoing BOD members, Sheila and Jane. Sheila had, after many years as President, the daunting task of acting as the Recording Secretary for the PHCA, while Jane handled the thankless job of being our Treasurer for many years. The investment of time, energy and efforts on behalf of the PHCA cannot be repaid, and we should all be thankful for their years of service. Wishing each of you a prosperous and health holiday season and looking forward to a New Year of Pharaoh Hound fun and excitement! Best, Robert 2

4 Editor s Notes 1. The PHCA supports a number of events, Hound shows, the National, the Eastern and Western. With all the performance events and supported shows across the country, you would think there would be a fair amount of Brags from the Membership. The Scribe has always been opened to the traditional Brag, but no one is taking advantage of it. SCRIBE- noun- historical Synonyms: clerk, secretary, copyist, transcriber Brag/ verb Boast, crow, swagger, swank, bluster, gloat, show off, sing one s own praises, and lay it on thick. You get the idea, send in your brags, the club s Scribe will add it to the next Newsletter. 2. All titles are noteworthy, from CGC, Best of Winners, and first obedience leg to Junior Coursers. Any Titles in front or after the dog s name is noteworthy and a brag. 3. This is the fourth and final Newsletter for 2017, almost time to celebrate. Upcoming PHCA Events: 2018 Eastern Specialty will be held during the CNJHA / Bucks /Trenton cluster of shows/events May 3 rd - May 7 th, These clusters of shows/events are 3 days in Erwinna, PA followed by 2 days in West Windsor Township, NJ. These shows are outdoors. o PHCA 2018 Eastern Regional Specialty with sweepstakes will be held with the Trenton KC allbreed show on Sunday, May 6 th in West Windsor Township, NJ. o PHCA Supported entries will be held with Central New Jersey Hound Association (CNJHA) on Thursday May 3 rd in Erwinna, PA 4

5 Bucks Co KC (BCKC) on Saturday, May 5 th in Erwinna, PA and Trenton KC (TKC) on Monday, May 7 th in West Windsor Township, NJ. Also with these shows: AKC National Owner Handled Series (NOHS) will be offered at all 4 of the conformation shows Thursday with CNJHA, Saturday with BCKC, Sunday with TKC and Monday with TKC. Obedience trials will be offered on Saturday May 5 th (with BCKC) and Sunday May 6 th (with TKC) Rally trials will be offered on Saturday May 5 th (with BCKC), Sunday May 6 th (with TKC) and Monday May 7 th (with TKC). A lure coursing test/trial will be offered by Lehigh Valley Coursing Club on Friday May 4 th at Tinicum Park in Erwinna, PA. An agility trial will be offered by Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club on Friday May 4 th in Metuchen, NJ (45 miles from Tinicum Park in Erwinna, PA). This is an indoor trial. CAT tests will be offered on Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 4-6 th (at Mercer Park, West Windsor Township, NJ) and also on Saturday May 5 th (at Tinicum Park, Erwinna, PA). The 4-6 month beginner puppy special attraction will be offered as part of the TKC shows on Sunday and Monday on May 6-7 th at Mercer Park, West Windsor Township, NJ. Canine Good Citizen and Trick Title Testing will be offered by Lizz Malloy. Dates TBD. Watch for more on the PHCA website and Facebook for more details as they are available. Thanks to Julie Gwin for coordinating the eastern events Western Specialty will be held again in Silverado, CA in mid-april in conjunction with the Western Hound Club's Hound Classic. Friday morning, April 13 will be the Western Specialty followed by an afternoon independent specialty. Saturday and Sunday will be the all hound shows at the same location. 7 Noteworthy News for November 2017 The AKC is constantly working on ways to expand our reach and our mission. While many changes are happening behind the scenes, it is my pleasure to make you aware of some of the initiatives our dedicated staff have been working on this month. AKC National Championship It is our favorite time of year! The entire AKC staff is diligently preparing for our 17th annual, AKC National Championship with our sponsor Royal Canin that will be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Our show is the largest canine competition in the US and showcases over 5000 of the best canines from around the world competing for top prizes and the coveted title of Best in Show. This show demonstrates the beauty and wonder of our sport and highlights the commitment of breeders and exhibitors to the well-being of all dogs. National Championship weekend is filled with competitions in Conformation, Agility, Obedience/Rally, and Diving Dogs as well as fun for the entire family, with AKC Meet the Breeds, a Kid Zone and many fabulous vendors. We will also honor breeder and fanciers who have made valuable contributions to our sport and the winners of the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence that make a difference in their community every day. If you cannot join the fun in Orlando, you can live stream our group judging on and live.royalcanin.com and view competitions from the other sports On Demand. AKC Breeder of the Year Group Honorees We pleased to recognize breeding programs from the Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding groups as 2017 AKC Breeder of the Year group honorees. The 2017 AKC Breeder of the Year award will be presented in the ring at the AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin on Saturday evening, December 16, A canine portraitist will be commissioned to commemorate a prominent dog from the Breeder of the Year s kennel, and their name will be added to the perpetual trophy and plaque on permanent display at the AKC headquarters in New York City. All group 7

8 recipients will receive a medallion in recognition of their achievements. The group winners are: Sporting Group: Helyne E. They have made important contributions to the sport of purebred dogs, and dogs bearing the honorees kennel names are a testament to their fine breeding programs. Achiever Dog Program The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce the launch of its new Achiever Dog certificate program. The AKC Achiever Dog certificate program is designed to recognize those exhibitors and dogs who participate in multiple sports. A dog will receive an AKC Achiever Dog certificate when they have been awarded a placement or earned a qualifying score in three different sports. Dogs can start earning AKC Achiever Dog certificates December 1, AKC is launching the Achiever Dog as a pilot program. At the end of one year, all owners who have received a certificate will be surveyed to determine the success of the program. Opportunities for improvement will be identified and could lead to a more refined program which recognizes these versatile dogs. This is a brief overview of some of the happenings at the AKC and ways in which we are carrying out our mission. We are proud to share our commitment to purebred dogs with you. 9 COVER STORY 2017 Juniors Top 20 Overall Ranking, at number one, with 36 Best Top Junior wins and 27 Reserve wins. Along with 30 Class wins and 1,100 defeated. Those are the statistics that follow Taylor Del Duca name in the current issue of The Canine Chronicle. Taylor, along with GCH Osiris Gentlemen Prefer Blonds, Sydney, ended the Junior Handler calendar year at the very top. Taylor was featured in the June 2015 Scribe, All Things Pharaoh and Our Future, Promising Young Handlers, in an issue of The Dog Show Journal. Who could forget watching Taylor present her dog to a Best in Breed win at the PHCA National Specialty in 2016? A dedicated, hardworking Junior, who has crafted her handling skills to the very top. As members of the Pharaoh Hound community, we can all celebrate in this top achievement and wish Taylor much luck and success in whatever she decides to venture on to next. I would be amidst if I did not mention that there is more to America s Top Junior. The lessons Taylor learned competing in juniors, she has applied to helping others. Stuffies for CASA, a fun event was held at the Southern Colorado Kennel Club Show this past November. A similar fundraiser in California, K9 s For Comfort, sparked Taylor to modify the idea to suit the needs of her own community. Through Taylor s efforts eighty one plush toys were donated. On the day of the show, all the stuffies were held in the benching area, waiting to be judged. The honor of judging the Best Stuffie in Show was given to that day s Best Junior Handler winner. Every plush toy donated was given to, The CASA of Pueblo and the Child Advocacy Center of Pueblo, both provide comfort to children. I cannot think of a better way for Taylor to end her Junior Show career, by helping others and bringing smiles to children. Great job Taylor. 9

13 N A C S W National Invitational Handler: Tabitha Perry Call Name: Sabia Registered Name: Nefer-Temu Samba Sabia Hometown: Portland, Oregon Breed (age) Pharaoh Hound (7) Sabia joined our home while I was deeply involved with caring for my Grandmother. Nose work offered an opportunity to experience new places with a fun, positive experience. This is still true 7 years later! Sabia is an amazing dog, I strive for competition to be all about fun together and putting a smile on her face and mine. If she s blushing, then I m doing it right. Tabitha Perry and Sabia were invited to compete in the National Association Canine Scent Work, National Invitational. Only the top performers based on points earned at the Elite division trial, held between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2017, were invited. A total of forty six teams were invited to compete at the Eastern States Expo Center in Springfield, MA. The event spanned three days, with ten super challenging searches that tested both dog and handlers training. Physical and mental stamina was required along with understanding odor detection. All forty six teams competing did not receive any daily updates during the three days of ranking. Only at the end of the final day did the teams learned their fate as to how they were doing comparatively. After three days of insane fun the results were posted. Tabitha and Sabia earned a 5 th placement overall with 3 rd place in one of the individual searches! They also received a special callout by the Judge with four of their searches marked as pronounced. Congratulations! Tabitha and Sabia, Awesome Job!
