2 President s Message Hi All: A new year begins as everything is reset to zero...and we begin the arduous, expensive and sometimes enjoyable task on the quest to end up at the top of the ranks in Like I'm sure a lot of you, I am thrilled that the wonderful world of technology recently allowed me to enjoy the fun and excitement of attending the 142nd annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. I did this, however, not in New York City in the wind and snow, but from my computer in sunny, seventy-five degree California. There was something special about this year as I watched the Pharaoh Hounds there competing in NYC - to be certain, there is ALWAYS something special and magical about Westminster. But this year, after watching the breed competition, I felt compelled to look at the catalog to see if what I believed I was seeing was actually true - and it was. I was impressed that there in NYC giving the youngsters a run for their money in the ring were four Pharaoh Hounds either at or approaching eight years of age. They were "Bubbles" GCHS DC Xo Bellini SC, bred by Lori Evans & Joseph Buchanan; "Jake GCHG CH DC Hallam's Jake Of Arolet SC bred by Dominic Carota and Dr. Stephen Sipperly; "Wave" GCHG DC Nefer- Temu Vou Te Contar RN MC LCX bred by Emily Kerridge; and "Wink" GCHS DC Mia Bakhu Sleeping With The Enemy Of Hallam MC bred by Pam Haig, Robert Newman & Longlesson Kennels (Jan Swayze and Grahm Miller). Look at those names and titles (and that's not ALL of them)...it's a veritable Alphabet Soup... After watching them compete, I tried to think of a breed that may also have veterans in their breeds that are still competitive on that level - maybe I'm missing them, but none came to mind. I also realized that ALL FOUR veterans in the ring that day are DUAL CHAMPIONS. At least two of them I know are multiple Best In Field winners. They are all a mix of either Silver or Gold Grand Champions, as well. Two of them are Best of Breed winners of the Pharaoh Hound Club of America National Specialty. I wonder - and will likely never know - what the connection is to longevity in the show ring and a Pharaoh Hound that excels in other arenas, as well. Whatever that magic combination is, congratulations to the breeders, owners and supporters of these veteran Pharaoh Hounds that helped make Westminster 2018 especially magical. and now, let the 2018 race begin... 4 Editor s Notes Time to turn the page to a new year, but first let s acknowledge some of the accomplishments earned from our chosen breed. The first PHCA Newsletter of the New Year, traditionally holds the Statics from the previous year. All the lists, from one to ten, Breed, All-Breed, Coursing to Agility. All neatly organized in a row, from Top Dog to all those in between. So let s celebrate what they all have in common and not just the win or placement. But each one accomplished something very special in their own right. Add to that, that they were all given the opportunities to achieve and excel. So yeah, let s celebrate another chapter for the Pharaoh Hound History book. When one of us wins, we all win, let s celebrate each other s successes! Darleen 4

5 Upcoming PHCA News: 2018 Eastern Specialty will be held during the CNJHA / Bucks /Trenton cluster of shows/events May 3 rd - May 7 th, These clusters of shows/events are 3 days in Erwinna, PA followed by 2 days in West Windsor Township, NJ. These shows are outdoors. PHCA 2018 Eastern Regional Specialty with sweepstakes will be held with the Trenton KC all-breed show on Sunday, May 6 th in West Windsor Township, NJ. Specialty Judge Pam Lambie Sweepstakes Judge Ron Murphy PHCA Supported entries will be held with Central New Jersey Hound Association (CNJHA) on Thursday May 3 rd in Erwinna, PA Breed Judge Diane Thompson Divin Sweepstakes Judge Dr. Azalea Alvarez Bucks Co KC (BCKC) on Saturday, May 5 th in Erwinna, PA Breed Judge Jamie Hubbard Trenton KC (TKC) on Monday, May 7 th in West Windsor Township, NJ. Breed Judge Harry Donoghue Also with these shows: AKC National Owner Handled Series (NOHS) will be offered at all 4 of the conformation shows Thursday with CNJHA, Saturday with BCKC, Sunday with TKC and Monday with TKC. Obedience trials will be offered on Saturday May 5 th (with BCKC) and Sunday May 6 th (with TKC) Rally trials will be offered on Saturday May 5 th (with BCKC), Sunday May 6 th (with TKC) and Monday May 7 th (with TKC). A lure coursing test/trial will be offered by Lehigh Valley Coursing Club on Friday May 4 th at Tinicum Park in Erwinna, PA. An agility trial will be offered by Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club on Friday May 4 th in Metuchen, NJ (45 miles from Tinicum Park in Erwinna, PA). This is an indoor trial. CAT tests will be offered on Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 4-6 th (at Mercer Park, West Windsor Township, NJ) and also on Saturday May 5 th (at Tinicum Park, Erwinna, PA). The 4-6 month beginner puppy special attraction will be offered as part of the TKC shows on Sunday and Monday on May 6-7 th at Mercer Park, West Windsor Township, NJ. Canine Good Citizen and Trick Title Testing will be offered by Lizz Malloy. Dates TBD. Watch for more on the PHCA website and Facebook for more details as they are available. 6 2018 Western Specialty will be held again in Silverado, CA in mid-april in conjunction with the Western Hound Club's Hound Classic. Friday morning, April 13 will be the Western Specialty followed by an afternoon independent specialty. Saturday and Sunday will be the all hound shows at the same location. 23 AKC Delegate Report Dear PHCA Members, Please see below for an end of year AKC update. The Spring Delegate Meeting will take place in Newark, NJ March 12th and 13th. I will update you accordingly after the meeting. AKC Humane Fund Update The AKC HF Programming consists primarily of grant-making and provides no direct services. Charitable and educational activities include Breed Rescue Grants, Grants to Domestic Violence Shelters, Scholarships, Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE Awards) and funding the AKC Library. The majority of Grants in 2017 were made in the Domestic Violence program area. 53 Domestic Violence Shelters successfully applied for HF grants to care for and improve infrastructure for pets. Total grant awards were $51,750 plus an additional $39,000 in future grant commitments. Programs have been funded in 37 out of 50 states since the inception of the program. The AKC Humane Fund through its Sandy Fund donated $10,000 to each of the following Organizations: The Houston SPCA Napa Humane Sonoma Humane Society The Sato Project The John D. Spurling Scholarship supports diverse academic pursuits. Five (5) scholarships are awarded per year totaling $10,000 to full-time students enrolled in courses of study that contribute to the well-being of dogs and responsible pet ownership. In 2017, AKC HF was accepted to the portfolio of Survey Monkey charities. The public fuels Survey Monkey s donations to charities by taking surveys. Survey Monkey donates $0.50 per survey, donated to the 23

24 charity of the respondent s choosing. In 2017, HF successfully lobbied to become part of the Survey Monkey Contribute roster. To date, $27,303 has been contributed from 14,772 people. In 2017, a Juniors Scholarship was endowed in the name of GCHP Hill Country s Let s Get Ready to Rumble. A $5000 annual scholarship will be awarded to the winners of the Junior Versatility Awards 1st and 2nd place in memory of Rumble. Junior Versatility recognizes Juniors who compete in at least 3 AKC Sports. AKC Canine Health Foundation Update Key Foundation activities for 2017 included: 1. Research programs funding growth 2. First AKC CHF veterinary student intern 3. Catalogued all CHF-grant scientific publications - >680 publications, cited >23,000 times 4. AKC CHF National Parent Club Canine Health Conference New Corporate Support and Partnerships: 1. Elanco Animal Health 2. Merck Animal Health 3. Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research An updated investment strategy and policy In 2017 $1.94 million was awarded for 43 grants. The CHF is currently managing $10.79 million in 140 active research grants. For 2017, AKC offered $1,000,000 in matching pledges. CHF Donations raised were $861,

25 AKC TV On Saturday February 10, 2018 AKC launched its brand new digital-first cable network called AKC.TV. This new joint venture with B Live productions is an OTT (Over-the-top) digital channel that can be accessed via a new innovative web-based platform or from akc.org. Dog lovers will be able to connect to AKC.TV from any device including computers, tablets, phones, set-top boxes, and AppleTV with additional platforms to come. Viewers can browse the on-demand content library of dog training videos, puppy and breed videos, original programming, live coverage of AKC events and our brand new weekly TV show, AKC Live! which covers all that is new or noteworthy in the world of AKC and Purebred Dogs. This modern platform allows AKC to broaden its audience, helps to expand the awareness of the AKC mission, and promotes the value of purebred dogs as pets and in society. AKC.TV will bring dog lovers into the world of the AKC through entertaining and educational content that they can access 24/7. New content will be uploaded weekly to keep the network fresh for viewers and give them insight into all aspects of our community including responsible breeders, our Parent Clubs, AKC events, AKC s unique charitable affiliates and anything imaginable to celebrate purebred dogs and their owners. This digital-first approach is in line with the national trend; approximately 20 million consumers a year have cut the cord and are choosing streaming services over traditional cable services. It also allows for us to have complete control over our message while getting maximum visibility. Videos can be easily shared across social media platforms and embedded into your websites. AKC Reunite-.Reunite has had excellent revenue growth over the past seven years, with total revenue of almost $9 million in 2017, which equates to 22% year over year topline growth. In 2017 AKC Reunite enrolled 460,000 pets, 25

26 bringing total enrollment in the recovery service to 6.6 million pets, representing 35 different species. In addition, 430,000 microchips were sold in Since 2002, AKC Reunite has awarded over $7 Million towards: Pet-related disaster preparedness / relief grants Matching grants for purchasing police dogs Microchip Scanner donations to shelters The AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer project which launched in September 2013 has raised over $1.6 million with 65 trailers donated across the country. New Breed Eligible for the Hound Group: The Azawakh will be able to compete in the Hound Group effective 01/01/19 AKC Detection Dog Task Force Update The AKC Detection Dog Task Force is involved in determining feasible methods for helping to improve the domestic supply of explosives detection dogs for the U.S. Background information about the state of detection dog demand and supply in the United States was provided to the Board as well as an update on the work of Government Relation s and the task force. Background: Experts recognize that there is no better or more efficient way to detect explosives than using high quality, specially trained scent detector dogs. Since the terrorist attacks on 9-11, and subsequent attacks worldwide, global demand for high quality explosives detection dogs has skyrocketed. A shortage of appropriate, domestically-bred dogs available for work as explosive detection dogs presents a significant threat to U.S. security. 26

27 The most sought-after breeds for explosives detection work in public areas are Sporting dogs that are developed from field/working lines. The preferred breeds include: Labrador Retriever German Shorthaired Pointer German Wirehaired Pointer Vizsla Other retriever breeds including Goldens and Flat-coats According to various sources within and outside the government, 80% to 90% of the dogs purchased by Homeland Security and DOD are from foreign vendors or domestic vendors who import from foreign sources. 33 The following items were discussed: - Introduction of Officers present. - Robert noted that the PHCA Facebook page has 1104 members. Posts are reviewed by Robert prior to appearing on page. Personal posts and puppy posts are not accepted for the PHCA site. - Treasurer s Report: Mary Severino reviewed the summary Statement of Financial Position, noting that expenditures for year included monies for the pop-up exhibit boards for the AKC Championship Meet the Breeds event in Orlando. Costs for shipping and damage to the existing boards led to procuring the second set. Mary also reviewed that the three PHCA bank accounts (Checking/Savings/Rescue Fund) were transferred to a nationally-present bank, Wells Fargo. The club now can make deposits at any branch in the country, and has a debit card tied to the accounts. - Rescue: PHCA has a designated rescue fund, something not every breed club has. The PHCA has a rescue trailer that has been dispatched for current relief efforts. The AKC has 5 disaster trailers that provide supplies for the local facilities in need. - PHCA Rescue efforts: Latest rescue involved a PH found in Utah. Thanks to the efforts of a number of people, the dog has been re-homed and is doing well. - The PHCA Board approved a donation of $1000 to the AKC Hurricane Relief efforts. - Sheila Hoffman with Rita Sacks have been working with AKC on the development of the Pharaoh Hound On-line Judge s Education Class. The class is now live on the AKC website. - Membership: The Board has been working on updates to the Membership Application process. - New club awards to be issue for 2017 include 7 dual championships, 3 versatility and one versatility excellent award. - Nominating Committee: The committee (Meredith Wille - chairperson, Mariah Houser, Debby King) were tasked with generating a slate of nominees for end-of-term board members, Jane Hodnett, Sheila Hoffman and Robert Newman. The Nominating Committee selected Robert Newman, Theresa Harper and Andrea Schokker as the slate for election consideration. The nominees will be published October 1. Additional nominees that are eligible members may be made through petition to the Recording Secretary. The specifics of this process are outlined in the PHCA By-laws. Nominations period closes on November 1. If no additional nominees are submitted, the slate stands. If additional eligible nominees are put forth, a ballot will go out in accordance with the PHCA Bylaws. - Robert Newman will sponsor a Coursing Challenge Trophy, annually, at the Western Specialty in the name of Phorest. - Breed mentors: There is a process for becoming a breed mentor that is available on the PHCA website. Currently, 7 people are approved breed mentors. 4 have been active mentors National Specialty: The Board received three proposals for the 2018 National Specialty. The proposals were voted upon, with the proposal for the Lexington, Kentucky accepted. The event will be held on 5 days over the Labor Day weekend. 33

34 - The Eastern Specialty will be on hiatus for An Eastern Supported Entry event will be held in Edison NJ, generally in April. Robert discussed the opportunities of club members to make proposals - for PHCA Specialty Events and Supported Entry events. Supported entries are the easiest and least expensive events to coordinate with the AKC and local clubs. - Diane Conyers asked about Board term limits. Robert Newman indicated that the lack of participation of the membership has led to a few individuals doing much of the work of the club. Robert welcomed viable suggestions regarding that policy and/or other current policies of concern. He noted that any changes to the PHCA By-laws are very difficult and time-consuming to make due to the extremely detailed requirements of the AKC. - PHCA Preferred Judges List: The membership is asked to vote for the preferred judges. Although the membership consists of about 100 people, only about 30 votes were received. With the limited responses, the count for the highest 5 judges was small. Members must take an interest and vote if they want to see their preferred judges represented appropriately on the PHCA list. - Motion to adjourn: Darci Kunard, with Jan Swayze second. 35 Financial Reports The Pharaoh Hound Club of America Treasurer s Report 2017 Year End Statement of Accounts: Reconciled Account Balances as of 12/31/17: Wells Fargo Business Checking: $15, Wells Fargo Business Market Rate Savings: $14, Wells Fargo Rescue Fund: $13, Total Accounts: $43, Primary income sources for the club are memberships and events. 1. Memberships: a. Membership income totaled $3,690 for the year, including $1740 for 2018 dues renewals and new member applications. Other membership income was associated with 2017 dues that came in January through March. For 2017, our member list totaled 28 Household Memberships, (56 Individuals within those households) 58 Individual Memberships and 1 Club Membership. Combined total = 105 members. b. This year, membership dues invoices were ed as well as mailed with self-addressed stamped envelopes. Included with invoices were information update sheets. c. Membership dues are required to be paid by January 1. i. Members with renewal dues remaining unpaid as of February 15, 2018, will not be included in the updated PHCA website list or the AKC membership update list unless they have notified the Treasurer of their intent to pay. ii. Dues left unpaid as of by March1 are in arrears. iii. Members who have not paid their renewal dues as of April 1, are subject to expulsion by lapsing. 2. Events: a. Our 2017 events all turned profits. Detailed information is available on the PHCA Specialties Comparison spreadsheet that I compiled in October. b. Summary Net Profits: i Eastern: $ ii Western and Independent: $ iii National: $ c. The Online Stores for the 2018 Western and the Eastern Specialty Events are both up and running. I ve been remiss about posting Sabia brags this year. Our Pharaoh Hound Club Newsletter editor gave a gentle nudge, reminding that we need to be celebrating our pups... so... Sabia played flyball after Thanksgiving, earning MBD and MBDX. Last weekend she placed 3rd at a Nosework Elite trial. Flyball: We ran Multibreed where all the dogs running in the race have to be different breeds, points earned qualify toward flyball titles and titles that are specific to Multibreed. The team earned enough points that she has her Multibreed Dog (MBD) and Multibreed Dog Excellent (MBDX) titles now. Major call out of thanks to the flyball community as we were a team of only 4 humans w/ 6 dogs and folks from other teams graciously stepped up to box load and shag for us. Super grateful for such a supportive community in this sport! Nosework: First trial after Invitational and she was nuts wired to work! I seriously felt like I needed a resistance training parachute and a scuba belt for added weight as she was dragging me into searches on 2 legs. Hang on. Thank you Tabitha Perry & Sabia.
