President s Message Hello All: Hard to believe that we are two thirds of the way through the year!! As you all know, the 2016 PHCA National Specialty is just around the corner, coming up in Gray Summit, MO September 13-18, It will be perhaps our MOST inclusive National yet, offering both AKC and ASFA lure coursing, obedience, rally, agility, conformation and the PHCA Triathlon. We will also have a health test blood draw, an educational seminar, the annual awards banquet, a rescue quilt raffle, and many more exciting events. I hope we will see many of you there. It has recently come to the attention of the PHCA BOD that there have been recent reports of incredibly bad sportsmanship around the Pharaoh Hound ring, some incidents actually including implied threats of violence. These types of incidents breach not only the PHCA Code of Ethics, but the rules of sportsmanship of AKC, as well. If you experience or even witness this type of behavior, it should be reported immediately and reported to the AKC rep at the show. Remember, violations must be reported at the time they occur or the AKC loses jurisdiction to act on them. At this point, approximately one half of the membership has responded to the mandatory health screening on the OFA web site. Please take the time to complete the health survey today. Looking forward to seeing you and your hounds soon!! Robert Lazy, crazy days of summer. This latest issue of the Scribe arrives just before the Pharaoh Hound Club of America National, at the Purina Farm in Grey Summit, MO. The lineup of activities looks Amazing. Five days of Pharaoh Hound Fun with Agility, Rally and Obedience. Two separate Lure Coursing Trials, AKC and ASFA rounding out the performance events. Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes offered along with Conformation judging, an Awards Banquet and Raffle. And not to lose sight that we are all stewards to this wonderful breed, a free CHIC, Blood Draw has been scheduled. The Scribe Staff will need your help with the next issue of the Scribe, due out sometime in December. That issue will be All National with results and photos from every event. But to accomplish that I will need everyone s help that will be there. Asking that you share your show photos, candid shots, anything you can send to the Scribe staff would be so appreciated and we thank you in advance. pharaohscribe@comcast.net Darleen Editor s Notes 2

Cover Story: Rufus Rufus is a senior Pharaoh hound that was in a foster, rescue situation with separation anxiety. I asked Lee Bridges, if she would share Rufus s adoption story with the Scribe. Lee graciously accepted my request and penned the following in Rufus s own words. So here is Rufus s story, as told to Lee, with some added help from his new housemates, Steed and Emma. Who helped with grammar, editing, and spellcheck? Hello, everyone! My name is Rufus the Rescue Pharaoh, and I recently adopted Lee and Mark Bridges. Darleen asked me to write down my experiences and I am happy to oblige. I am a purebred Pharaoh Hound who lived happily on a ranch for ten years. Then my owner died. He was awesome and I really missed him, so I decided that the next time I had a human, we would never be apart, even for five minutes. Trainers call this separation anxiety, but I think it s just common sense. Dark days followed. I experienced harrowing adventures including trying to chew through a crate, breaking three teeth, and almost being euthanized. Luckily the vet phoned Pharaoh Hound Club Rescue, and I was sent to Theresa and Allan Harper as a foster dog. Theresa and Allan were wonderful foster parents, even though they took me to the vet a lot and gave me medication. They made sure I was secure, happy, healthy, and well socialized. Their Pharaoh Hounds Ruadh and Vie helped a lot with this. Well, Vie did. Ruadh kind of stared at me indignantly. I think she was mad that I bonded with her puppy and took up lots of space on the sofa. I m a big guy. Unfortunately, after several months of arranging their lives around me, Theresa and Allan had to go back to their regular work schedule, which meant that I would not be around humans for eight to ten hours daily. I refused to tolerate this with any kind of grace, so they needed to find me a forever home. A couple of prospective homes fell through, not due to anyone s fault, but only because they weren t the right match. So Theresa took me to a lure course in Silverado, California, to let me shop through the available humans and pick one out. As fate would have it, even though they rarely go lure coursing, Lee and Mark Bridges happened to have the day off, and they attended with their 14- year-old Pharaohs, John Steed and Emma Peel. Theresa cunningly handed my leash to Lee so that I could take her for a walk. I enjoyed exercising Lee, so I decided to meet her husband, Mark. 4
Well, that was it. Mark is one of those rare humans who just GETS animals. As soon as I met him, we both fell in love. I sat on his feet and wouldn t move, and he petted me and scritched me and played with me, and it was like we d known each other forever. And Steed and Emma greeted me like I was already one of the pack. On seeing this, Lee started frantically texting Pam Haig and saying things like, But our house isn t that big! Too late. Theresa and Robert Newman and some other people walked up and said, That s it, you re history! and I think some of them pointed and laughed. I couldn t go home with my new family that day, of course, but we met several times over the course of the next month. Then we gave each other a two-week trial run, for which Theresa prepared Lee with a nice bottle of tequila. Both the bottle and the two weeks went down well, and now it s official: I have adopted Lee and Mark as my forever people. For those of you wondering how a ranch dog would get along in a city, let me tell you: Hollywood is the town that knows how! Almost everyone here has a dog, so there are big parks where you can take your humans off leash and they can exercise without escaping. Businesses let you walk inside, and restaurants and cafes have outdoor patios with fresh water and biscuits. And there are fancy dog-oriented shops all over the place! Anyone care for organic treats and holistic massage? The house is different from what I m used to, but very comfortable, with cushions and blankets everywhere. Some guy named Rudolph Valentino used to live here with his sighthounds while he worked at a movie studio two blocks away, so I fit the environment perfectly. There isn t a yard, exactly, but it has a big cobblestone courtyard that gets lots of shade and sun, and there s a dog pad that Mark s mother made expressly for Pharaoh lounging. And the separation anxiety? It s no longer a problem, because Lee and Mark work from home! Lee is a fencing coach who lunges up and down the courtyard stabbing people. She also pursues a sport called Hollywood script editing, in which you type as fast as you can while saying Scottish insults out loud. I think you get extra points if you freehand the phone into the trash bin. Mark is more mellow and Zen-like. He is principally in charge of feeding us, which places him very high on our ladder of priorities. Aside from Pharaoh Hound Appreciation, he spends his time building things, repairing other things, teaching kung fu, and saying things like, Calm down, honey, and, Want some tea? Steed and Emma are famous writers whose adventures have been published for years, but they ve started to slow down a bit and are working on their memoirs. However, I get to go everywhere and do everything. A few weeks ago I helped out at a Red Cross shelter for fire evacuees because I love everyone and want them all to rub me. I ve also been to sunny street festivals and shady cafés, and even walked past a movie premiere on Hollywood Boulevard! From being a rescue hound who was almost euthanized, I m on the way to becoming an A-lister. Last week we all went to an ultra-hip new outdoor restaurant called Salazar, where there was a two-hour wait, but the staff recognized me from a prior visit and said, Rufus! Welcome back!, then gave us a prime table inside of ten minutes. Mark and Lee say that when I make it big, they hope I won t forget my old pals. So that s my story. Lee says it might make a good movie if we can work in car chases and explosions. I told her I d be happy to oblige, but she begged me not to. Happy exploring, everyone, and remember if you want a great forever home, don t do that thing with the toilet paper, and keep on being awesome! Rufus and Lee Bridges 5

Health OFA Quarterly Breed Report (April-June 2016) Health Survey The Annual Health Survey is on the OFA Web site. Please take the time to reply, even if there are NO changes. Every member should take the time and reply at some point each and every calendar year. 7
AKC Delegate Report Dear PHCA Member, Please see below for information from AKC on the new Bred with HEART Program; a much more stringent protocol than the original Breeder of Merit Program. The Breeder of Merit Program continues to increase litter registrations but has come under ridicule in some quarters due to its minimal requirements Further, the Breeder of Merit program does not verify the information that is provided...it is essentially a self -certification program whereas HEART Breeders are subject to inspection and compliance verification. AKC s Bred with HEART Breeder Program: HEART-Health, Education, Accountability, Responsibility and Tradition As part of AKC s century-long commitment to advance the health and welfare of all dogs, the AKC has a new program called Bred with H.E.A.R.T. The program gives AKC a new way to engage, encourage and recognize ALL breeders who meet specific health testing standards and who participate in continuing education. An AKC Bred with H.E.A.R.T breeder makes an on-going commitment to the health and well-being of purebred dogs by committing to these program requirements: HEALTH Certifying that their breeding stock is health tested in accordance with the recommendations of their breed's AKC Breed Parent Club. EDUCATION Promising that they will pursue AKC provided or AKC approved continuing breeder education so that they stay current on the best breeding practices, including advances in canine health. ACCOUNTABILITY Agreeing to comply with the AKC Care and Conditions Policy, including inspections by the AKC, and promising to share with AKC health testing and continuing education documentation. RESPONSIBILITY Accepting responsibility for the health and well-being of the puppies they produce and for complying with all laws regarding the ownership and maintenance of dogs. TRADITION Upholding the AKC's tradition of breeding purebred dogs that are happy and healthy. THE FOLLOWING MUST BE MET IN ORDER TO BE ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM: Certify that applicable health screens are performed on breeding stock as recommended by the respective AKC Breed Parent Club and be prepared to supply proof of such compliance upon request Must agree to comply with the AKC Care and Conditions Policy, including inspection(s) by the American Kennel Club or its duly authorized representative Must agree to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding the ownership and maintenance of dogs Must agree to complete AKC-approved and/or AKC-provided continuing breeder education courses annually Must complete the online application process and pay an annual fee of $25 per breed 8

All Things Pharaoh When I saw a recent photo of Kendra and her Pulling Crew, I just had to know more about weight pull with a Pharaoh hound. Thank you Kendra for taking the time to write this up for the newsletter. I m sure you d never thought a Pharaoh Hound could do anything other than chase rabbits in your backyard, jump over hurdles or be obedient. But they can. I got into weight pulling through my friend Linda who I met 3 years ago. I had been working with her White Shepherds for a while showing them in UKC and competing with them in dock diving, when she invited me to a weight pull competition. She had me work with one of the shepherds at the event, and I was hooked! I started attending local weight pull competitions with Linda and the White Shepherds, and she frequently encouraged me to get one of my Pharaoh Hounds into the sport. I was in denial that a Pharaoh would even do such a thing as they re far from wanting to please; however, Linda and I have a mutual friend, Kelli, who has her Basenjis pulling (and they do VERY well), so I thought there might be a (small) chance one of the Pharaohs would, too. So, when I was at the W3PO weight pull National in May of last year, there was a cart as the top prize in the raffle. This cart was similar to the usual wheel carts used in a wheels event, just smaller and with a bench on it. I ended up winning the cart and taking it home. It sat in the barn unused for a year as I still was unsure as to which of my dogs would actually pull. Then, at the beginning of this year, I received from a different friend a hand-me-down harness that happened to fit Bentley perfectly. That s when it all started... 11
Typically, you would start training a new dog using heavy chains or some other type of weighted resource that can be connected to the D ring on the end of the weight pull harness. However, at the time I started working with Bentley, I didn t have chains so I took a chance and attached the harness directly to the cart. But, I first got him used to walking in the harness with nothing attached to it for two sessions which lasted approximately 15 minutes each. The next session I attached him to the empty cart using the harness and also had him on a lead. I stood in front, facing him, and called him to me, telling him to WORK. Right away he started pulling; I was completely shocked. I then added small amounts of weights (in the form of bricks) to the cart, each session gradually increasing the number of bricks added. In no time, I had a hard working puller of my own that at his first competition pulled 4,178lbs on rails and 1,957lbs on wheels. Bentley absolutely loves weight pulling! To get started in weight pulling, you need to obtain a weight pull harness that properly fits your dog; many people have the harness made specifically for their dog. Usually, it can take approximately 3 months to get a dog up and ready to start competing using the proper training techniques. I had Bentley ready in 3 weeks: I think he is a natural. When training with chains or weights, the dog is first walked around in just the harness. Then, a single chain or weight is attached to the harness, and the dog is encouraged to pull this weight. With each training session, the dog starts with an empty harness, and then weight is slowly attached, with an increase in the total weight. To end the training session, the weights are slowly removed from the harness with the dog finally working again with an empty harness. Training sessions usually last 15 to 30 mins, and a dog is worked about 2 to 3 times a week. I hope this information helps, and that more Pharaoh Hounds venture into the sport of weight pulling!
