2 President s Message Hello All!! First of all, congratulations to all the winners and participants at the Eastern Regional Specialty that took place May 3-7, From all accounts, the weekend was a great success, filled with great food, good friends, old and new and plenty of ribbons that were spread around. Congratulations to Meredith Wille, who was awarded the Eastern Honors Award for 2018 in recognition for her longstanding contributions to the breed. It is too early to sit back and relax, as the Pharaoh Hound Club of America 2018 National Specialty is coming up in Lexington, Kentucky on August 30-September 3, Information is available on the Pharaoh Hound Club of America Facebook page and the National Specialty packet and premium lists will be out very soon. There will be many activities (dog-related and otherwise) and there is plenty to do and see in Lexington. I hope we will see you all there. As we approach the middle of the year, please remember to go to the OFA web site and complete the Health Questionnaire, which is required of all members. The Board of Directors has recently added Andrea Schokker and Theresa Harper to the BOD. Both of these members bring extensive knowledge and experience in dog sports and Theresa has been involved with the Pharaoh Hound breed for many years. There is no doubt they will both be assets to the PHCA BOD and we are thrilled to have them both join the board and share their love of our breed. Robert 2

4 Welcome New Member Tom Andrews Egg Harbor City, NJ Editor s Notes Everything Old Is New Again It s back, the PHCA Supported Entry in Wrentham, MA. This will be our seventeenth year supporting a PHCA Entry at the Wampanoag All Breed Kennel Club Show. A tradition that began in 2002 with a one day Sunday show. In 2009 the Eastern Regional Specialty joined our Cluster, adding two additional shows. Nine years of a four show weekend, same site, The Cracker Barrel Cluster. This year the Eastern moved back to Trenton, New Jersey and I feel like my best friend moved away. I will miss the Eastern and everything that it brought. But I am not ready to call it quits just yet. Sixteen years and twenty six PHCA Supported shows under my belt and five hundred and sixty seven entries of Pharaohs, no, not yet. So Welcome back to the new, old, revised PHCA Supported Entry at the Cracker Barrel Cluster in Wrentham, MA. 7 March 2018 Chairman s Report THE NEW AKC MUSEUM OF THE DOG We celebrate our passion for purebred dogs every day of our lives at dog shows, matches, club meetings, social gatherings, and certainly at home with our beloved canine companions. Because we must be the voice for our dogs, we cannot be an echo chamber. With pet ownership and interest in dogs at an all-time high, the time is right for us to share our passion with audiences beyond our core. Our expanding communication platforms such as AKC.tv are exposing more people to our content and messaging on the digital level. Yet even with all of the technological advancements we enjoy, consumers are craving interpersonal connections and new experiences more than ever before. This year, we are continuing to build the groundwork that will allow us to bring the world of purebred dogs to a broader segment of the public in a brand new way. I am delighted to announce that in less than a year, the AKC Museum of the Dog will return to its original home in New York City. The vision of the AKC Museum of the Dog is to celebrate dogs and the human-canine bond. We remain true to its mission. Through the Museum s collection of fine art and artifacts, engaging exhibits and evolving programs, visitors will develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for dogs. We will achieve our educational objectives on a greater scale in New York City, where the region is home to approximately twenty million people. The relocation of AKC s headquarters to a more suitable space at 101 Park Avenue offers the rare opportunity for us to combine our work on behalf of purebred dogs with a dynamic resource for the public. Queenie Park in St. Louis has been a wonderful host to our Museum, to the extent that what was meant to be a temporary home offered more than thirty-two years of service. We are so grateful to the St. Louis community for their dedicated stewardship of the collection. In the quest to develop new and expanded audiences, the heart of New York City once again presents itself as the most promising location for the AKC Museum of the Dog. Economic development data show that New Yorkers love dogs, to the tune of well over a million pets in the City. High levels of education and household income in the region are further indicators of demand for cultural entertainment. With approximately six hundred thousand people living within two miles of the Museum s new site, there is strong potential for a sizeable local membership. Widening that lens, we should also note that New York City welcomes 60 million tourists every year from all over the US and other parts of the world. Yet, one cannot assume if we build it they will come. Experts have told us that when choosing cultural activities, people primarily contemplate entertainment value, the ability to experience something with friends or family, and the potential to expand one s knowledge or horizons. It is these considerations that will guide the interpretive strategy for our Museum. Interactive platforms and fun aspects of the visitor experience will be key elements in the plan to attract children and youth, as well as the growing seniors market. Displays of the Museum s collection and artifacts alongside evolving and interactive content about dog breeds, the AKC and the role of dogs in society will illuminate the human-canine Bond and showcase our organization in a completely new and contemporary light. Our aim is to present programming that balances art, education, data and whimsy, so that visitors are inspired to spend time with us and come back repeatedly with their friends and family. We will have more than 17,000 square feet in which to tell the world our story and welcome everyone to the wonderful world of dogs. The statement-making ground floor will host changing exhibits and events and will offer curated retail items in a gift shop. The next floor up 7

8 will be reachable by an interior staircase and elevator, where the Museum will host the permanent collections and a portion of the AKC Library for public use. Uniquely designed by the award-winning global architecture firm, Gensler, the gallery experience will provide flexibility in a physical sense as well as learning and gathering to maximize interaction with our subjects. Nearby on the fifth floor will be the new home of AKC s corporate offices. Construction is to begin within a month. Guiding us in this significant outreach effort is our new Director of AKC Cultural Resources, as well as four enthusiastic new members of the Museum s Board of Directors. A smooth transition for the artwork is already underway, and a collection management policy is in development. There will be many updates in the coming months as we work toward our 2019 opening. I invite you all to become part of this exciting project. Critique: Dear members of the PHCA Western Regional: Thank you so much for inviting me to judge at your specialty for Puppy sweeps and Veteran sweeps. It was an honor to join you at the specialty and see your beautiful dogs. It is really helpful in a breed that is nearly a rare breed to be able to see fairly large numbers. I only wish there had been more puppies to judge. I always long for the olden days that even I, as old as I am, never got to see where there were very rich breeding kennels which supported the breeding of large numbers of quality stock so that you could winnow out the best of the best and had lots of money and help to carry on such projects; alas none of us in this country will probably ever see that day again and with the exception of some of the developing countries with their inexpensive labor for such Kennels no one will see this. I was able to go through the Pharaoh Hound Club of America's online course, the AKC online materials prior to judging at the specialty and they all were helpful. As a general overall comment because I watched both the morning and afternoon specialties, all classes I was surprised considering the comments made in all the literature about white markings the amount of white, particularly ticking and flecking that was seen. I determined based on the use of the dogs, movement and endurance were very important so I made an effort even with the veterans to see that the dogs in the ring were given an opportunity to really move, settle into their natural stride and ensure the best of the natural gait which even the puppies did quite well. I had only dogs in puppy sweeps and one of the youngest caught my attention in the beginning and is quite a stunning one - number nine, whom I gave best of sweeps to though it came out of the youngest class this pup had beautiful movement, beautiful balance, the head was lovely, the ears were perfectly positioned, the head a perfect picture. I think in the end that the positioning of the ears on the head, because it so affects type in pharaohs is something that is very important to watch and pay attention to in your puppies and this taken together with the eye shape has a great impact on type. As to the veterans I was very pleased with how well these dogs held up particularly oldest class of veterans. I always think it is wonderful when an older dog still presents all of the best features of the breed and is really differentiated only by the white or gray hair in his coat and I can say this about the best veteran in sweeps that I selected out of the three animals which was number 18, number 17 coming in best of opposite. 18 was just a beautiful veteran bitch and I am generally not a bitch picker; she really could've fooled me were it not for the 12

13 white hair. We had three absences in the veterans, two in dogs and one in bitches so once again I only had three to judge from. 17 in the dogs though it was from the 7 to 10 year class was a very nice picture of the younger class of veteran he could've shown with the big dogs on the day as they say and no one would've been the wiser. 15 Judge's Evaluation Western Regional Specialty Show April 13, 2018 AM Show Stacey Davis First of all, I would like to thank the Pharaoh Hound Club for inviting me to judge the Western Regional Specialty Show. It was an honor and the dogs were lovely. The club did a wonderful job putting on the show and my Ring Steward was there for me she had everyone ready and kept me on time. Thank you all. I had a total entry of 21 which were a nice mix between puppies, adults, veterans, class dogs and specials. My Winners Dog and Best of Winners from the Bred by Class Hallam Bakhu's Life Can Be a Thriller was a nice specimen. He had a nice head, good movement and a correct shape for me and size wise fit the standard. Overall, I find the breed is getting a bit too high on leg. My Reserve, FC Enigma Samura Spirit SC was nice with good conditioning. Winners Bitch was from the Open Class, Kaije'z Faro Fiji Tides of FFK. She was a lovely girl with very smooth movement and lovely head and ear set. Her size and proportion fit my image of a correct Pharoah Hound bitch. Reserve from months Bazinga Dragon's Inferno at RockN is just a year and has good potential. Best of Breed was GCH DC Sendji's New Coat of Paint RN MC LCX LCM CGC VCX JOR GRC TKN impressed me enough to fit her long list of titles. She is a lovely bitch of the correct size and shape. She has the appearance of both grace and power and was in excellent condition. She moved smoothly down and back and floated on the go-around. She has a lot to offer the breed if bred correctly. Best of Opposite Sex and Best Owner Handler was won by GCHG Farao Anubis Inferno BN RN SC OA NAJ NF. He is a very nice dog who moves correctly on the go-around with a powerful rear drive. His head and ear set are outstanding giving a lovely alert expression. Junior Showmanship had two exhibitors Turner Parks in Novice (my Best Junior) and Abigail Sheely- McDonough in Open. I am often asked about my final decision for Best Junior. To me, it is as simple as DOWN AND BACK. Having started as a Junior many long years ago, it was drilled into us that if you cannot do a straight down and back with your exhibit, there is no way the judge can see how good your dog is. My last request is always a final down and back which gives me my winner most of the time. The art of getting a dog to do the straight down and back takes hours of practice and patience. It can decide Juniors and pays off in the conformation ring. Thanks again for the invitation to judge, and to all the exhibitors and Pharaoh lovers good luck in future endeavors. 15

CRITIQUE: I want to thank the Pharaoh Hound Club of America for allowing me to judge sweeps at your Western Regional Specialty. The Pharaohs are one of my favorite breeds and it was an honor to be allowed in the ring with some exceptionally lovely hounds. PUPPY SWEEPS There were two young males in the 6-9 puppy class. Both males had lovely breed type with clean lines, good balance front and rear, pleasing heads with proper ear set and a keen, alert expression. My nal decision in this class came down to movement. All other things being equal, the rst place puppy won the class based on his front movement and side gait. He had good reach with little break in the pastern and had a free, easy, balanced side gait, covering ground without wasting motion. The puppy in second place had a stronger rear than the puppy in rst place with a moderate bend of sti e and good drive. It was splitting hairs on these two as one had stronger front movement and one stronger rear movement. Both had a level top line on the move and both had the noble bearing desired in the breed. Although there was only one entry in the puppy class he was a lovely dog and was Best In Puppy Sweeps. He is a powerful, yet graceful, dog with good balance & good substance. He has good clean cut lines and moved with purpose covering ground with well balanced reach and drive and a strong top line. He has a sound moderate rear with good muscling balanced with moderate front angulation. VETERAN SWEEPS I found every one of the six veterans in the sweeps classes to be lovely quality with excellent breed type. The younger dogs had the advantage with stronger movement coming and going but the overall conditioning and breed type of the entry was impressive. There were two males in the 7-10 veteran class and they were both very nice and really, despite greying muzzles, still very competitive with younger dogs in their prime. The rst place dog in this class went on to be Best In Veteran Sweeps. He is a moderately sized dog exuding grace and symmetry. He is well balanced front and rear with powerful yet graceful movement. He had a well set in 16

17 shoulder with a balanced upper arm return which is something I cherish as we are loosing this in many sighthounds today. The second place dog was also of lovely quality with a classic chiseled head and good proportions. He has a lovely side gait and moved with purpose. He is well muscled and in excellent condition. There was only one entry in the Veteran dog class ten years and up. He is a handsome old boy still showing excellent breed type and condition for his age. He is balanced front and rear with moderate angles. Despite his age he still has a good top line and a moderate tuck up. I m afraid he lost out due to his age today as the younger male had many of his same attributes coupled with the strength and condition of a younger dog. There were three veteran bitches entered and every one of them showed classic Pharaoh Hound breed type. All three were graceful and well-balanced with lovely long necks, chiseled heads, properly set ears, and alert expressions. There were two entries in the 7-10 veteran bitch class. Both bitches were moderately sized with good balance and proportion. The bitch in first place had a classic wedge shaped head piece going into a long well-set neck. Her shoulders are set well into her body with a balanced upper arm return. Ultimately this bitch s moderate size, balanced proportions - not too long, and sound movement won her the class and Best of Opposite in Veteran Sweeps. The second place bitch had many of the same attributes as the first place bitch. She had a good head piece, classic clean cut lines, and I liked her moderate size and balanced proportions. She was slightly lame which affected the freedom of her side gait but I couldn t detect any problems on the up and back movement where she moved soundly. The lovely old girl in the 10 and older bitch class, was just that lovely. She is a little larger and longer cast than the younger bitches, but her top line held up well on the move and she is moderate and balanced. She is a grand old girl with beautiful breed type and she used herself with grace and style. Independent Specialty Show April 13, 2018 First of all, I would like to thank the PHCA for inviting me to judge your beautiful Pharaohs. I would also like to thank Sue Carter for her excellent ring stewarding. She kept me on time and made it easy for me to concentrate on the dogs. Usually at a Specialty the judge likes far more exhibits than she has ribbons for, and this Specialty was no exception. I did see some overshot bites and some unsoundness on the down and back but those were in the minority and there were a number of Pharaohs I could have easily taken home. I was also pleased to see that most were owner-handled. I believe that you, the breeders, should be very proud of yourselves for the quality you are producing. 19

Sound and moving well from the side Mo Puppy Dog 1. #7 Bazinga Copernicus The Stargazer CGC. Well shaped head with alert expression. Nice neck into shoulder and a strong outline. A good mover on the down and back and from the side. RWD BBE Dog 1. #9 Hallam Bakhu s Life Can Be a Thriller. Of slighter build that some of the others. Good expression with nicely made head and good outline. Not as sound as I would have liked. Open Dog 1. #11 FC Enigma Samuraj Spirit SC. I just loved this boy. Good substance, masculine head with alert expression, Well-laid back shoulders blending into strong topline. Quarters strong with a nice wide second thigh. A very good mover, sound with a solid side gait. Had all the attributes of a Champion and he became one today. WD/BOW WD: FC Enigma Samuraj Spirit SC RWD: Bazinga Copernicus The Stargazer CGC Puppy Bitch 1. #6 Bazinga Dragon s Inferno at Rockn. A lovely head and expression with a good outline. Moved beautifully from the side but not as strong on the down and back. RWB BBE Bitch 1. #10 Shalimar Hera Queen of the Gods. Good head and expression with a smooth outline. Moved soundly with balanced movement from the side. 2. #8 Qhaveat From the Ashes. Smooth body with balanced outline but her movement let her down today. American Bred Bitch 1. #14 Shalimar Nike Goddess of Victory SC. Lovely bitch with feminine head and expression. Very nice outline with well-shaped brisket and moderate, strong rear. Nice and easy on the move. I found the lack of white on her very pleasing. WB. Open Bitch 1. #16 Kaije z Faro Fiji Tides of FFK. Pretty head and expression and a smooth outline. 21 Veteran Dog 7 years and Older I liked both of these boys very much and felt they were very similar. 1. #15 Ch Springdown Atomic Tangerine SC. Lovely masculine head and expression. Good outline and substance. Well laid back shoulder into strong topline. Quarters were moderate and strong. Moves parallel from the rear and nice and easy from the side. 2. #13 GCh DC Bija Springdown at World s End SC. Another beautiful head with a strong outline. Also moves very soundly and true. Veteran Bitch 7 Years and Older 1. #22 GCh Springdown Sugar Plum. Similar to the winner of the Veteran Dog class. Feminine head, good outline, nice substance and a good mover. 2. #18 GChB KC Galadrial s Aurora Red Du Ciel BN RA MC CA RATN CGC TKA. Attractive girl with light and easy movement but a tad long in body. 3. #20 GChB Churuka Mia Ruadh The Day at Mirare SC. Another pretty girl with a balanced outline and good movement. Best of Breed Competition BOB: #17 GChS DC Mia Bakhu Sleeping with the Enemy of Hallam MC. I have judged and awarded this Pharaoh before but now he s in his prime and he did not disappoint. In my mind he is the quintessential Pharoah. Well-shaped masculine head with good ears and balanced outline with smooth transition of neck into well laid back shoulders. Strong topline, wide second thigh and strong quarters with a well-placed long tail completed the picture. His movement was balanced, effortless and true. BOW: #11 FC Enigma Samuraj Spirit SC BOS: #24 GChS DC Galadrial s Its In The Stars Du Ciel PCD BN RE SC DJ CGC TKP. Ultra-feminine, lithe, beautiful outline with good substance, well laid back shoulder, strong topline and quarters and a wonderful mover I could go on and on. This is just a lovely, lovely bitch. SD: #21 GChG Farao Anubis Inferno BN RN SC OA NAJ NF Another outstanding Pharaoh. Strong head with good expression. Well laid back shoulders blending into a strong topline and well-muscled loin. Nice substance to him. Strong quarters and a wide second thigh. He is well balanced and moves true with an easy side gait. SB: #34 Ch Farao Anubis J Adore. I notice that my SB was bred by the breeder of my SD and this bitch is a feminine counterpart to him. Lovely head, smooth neck into shoulders, smooth topline into a strong loin. Strong quarters, wide second thigh and a well-placed, long tail. Her movement was sound on the down and back with a lovely side gait. AOM: #30 DC Mirare Churuka Mia La Vie En Rose SC LCX Petite, feminine with a lovely head, good neck into shoulders, strong topline and good quarters. She also was a very good mover, sound with a good side gait. I didn t particularly like her tail but she had so many outstanding qualities that she was not to be denied. 21

Wink is pictured winning the independent Pharaoh Hound Club of America Specialty Show held in conjunction with the PHCA Western Regional Specialty, April 2018, at just under a month of 8 years old - his 6th Specialty win. 44 The Pharaoh Hound Club of America Treasurer s Report May 23, 2018 Statement of Accounts: 2018 First Quarter Account Balances as of 03/31/18: Wells Fargo Business Checking: $14, Wells Fargo Business Market Rate Savings: $14, Wells Fargo Rescue Fund: $13, Total Accounts: $42, We began 2018 with our accounts totaling $43, As the operating account, the Wells Fargo Business Checking account is reflecting a minor reduction of funds for the first quarter of $ The first quarter generally reflects club annual expenses associated with our insurances, governmental fees and show expenses that must be paid prior to garnering full revenue from our Specialty events that occur in April, May and August/September. Preliminary indications are that both the Western and Eastern Specialty events were successful financially due to the hard work of the event chairs (Shawna Swanson and Julie Gwin) along with their committees. Final accounting of both events is in process. The 2018 PHCA National Specialty will be held over the Labor Day holiday at the Kentucky Horse Park, in Lexington, Kentucky. Event chair, Jan Swayze-Curry has been working on what is sure to be a wonderful national at a beautiful venue. The 2018 National Specialty online store will soon be operating. 45 AKC Detection Dog Task Force Initiatives Government Regulation Revisions The AKC Government Relations team is working to make it easier and more advantageous for domestic breeders to sell to the government. The AKC was instrumental in submitting key language to HR 2810, which will require the Department of Defense to provide regular reporting on questions related to the sourcing of military working dogs, including the number of dogs purchased from domestic vs. non-domestic breeders, the costs associated with each, information on the difference in accounting for domestic vs. European dog purchases; and how they determine which dogs to get. Breeder Outreach Most breeders are unaware that there is a need for dogs to be trained for explosives detection work. The most in-demand breeds for public detection work are sporting dogs, including Labrador Retrievers, German Shorthair Pointers, German Wirehair Pointers, and Vizslas. The AKC is conducting outreach to breeders through articles, meetings and presentations to kennel clubs and national parent clubs. Raising Awareness and Bringing Stakeholders Together The AKC has met with many stakeholders in the detection dog field, including TSA and Department of Defense officials, university scientists who are working to improve the dogs and their performances, and private businesses that train and sell the dogs and provide security services through handler-dog teams. AKC hosted its first US Detection Dog Conference in 2017 and will host its second conference on Aug , 2018, in Durham, NC. Following the events of 9-11, the demand for scent detection dogs for use in search and rescue, as well as explosives detection, began to grow and has steadily risen since. Recent events, including the 2016 bombings in Brussels and New York City, have accelerated the interest in detection dogs. Nowadays, it is not just governments and militaries that are seeking dogs. Non-governmental demand across the developed world is also increasing, especially by private entities tasked with protecting malls, movie theaters, sports complexes, schools and universities. Most U.S. government agencies are relying almost exclusively on the importation of working dogs from Europe to meet their needs. Most private working dog trainers and private providers of security services in the U.S. are also dependent on European sources. American experts in the importation and training of working dogs claim that for many years the U.S. has received less than the best picks of the litters in Europe, as the best dogs tend to be retained for use in Europe. However, due to the growing terrorism threats and consequent demand for working dogs within 45

46 Europe and around the world, there is now a shortage of even mediocre quality foreign dogs available to protect the United States. U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense (DOD) officials say there is a need to develop a national source of dogs that meets the standards for this work and that can be made available to government agencies. There are currently an estimated 10,000 working dogs in the United States, including dogs working in government, military, law enforcement, and private facilities. About 20 percent of working dogs retire each year. Working dogs typically go to work at 18 months to 2 years of age and have an average working life of five years before retirement. The DOD operates a small breeding program, primarily for Belgian Malinois, at its kennels at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, but the program cannot meet the total need so the DOD purchases most of its dogs in Europe. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had its own detection dog breeding program for primarily Labrador Retrievers until shutting it down in 2012 due to budget cuts. AKC Vice President of Government Relations Sheila Goffe testified at a congressional hearing in October regarding the dire need for more dogs to protect the country. Experts recognize that there is no better or more efficient way to detect explosives than through the use of high quality, specially trained scent detector dogs. Since the terrorist attacks on 9-11, and subsequent attacks worldwide, global demand for high quality explosives detection dogs has skyrocketed, Goffe said. A shortage of appropriate, domestically-bred dogs available for work as explosive detection dogs presents a significant threat to U.S. security. Why is the American Kennel Club involved in this issue? The AKC Board of Directors formed a task force to study this issue and how AKC could assist after receiving requests for help from government and academic officials. AKC has always been a leader in purpose-bred pure-bred dogs, and it is purpose-bred pure-bred dogs that have the skills, ability and breeding to produce the traits needed for detection dogs to successfully do their important jobs. It is a natural role for AKC to assist in meeting this national need to protect our country, and a great opportunity to promote the incredible abilities of pure-bred dogs. The AKC s support of this issue demonstrates to the American public that purebred dogs bred by thoughtful, purposeful, American breeders are vital to the safety and security of their country. How is AKC working to solve the shortage? The AKC Detection Dog Task Force is helping spread awareness of the issue with breeders of the most indemand dogs. The Government Relations team is working to change government policy to make it easier and more advantageous for breeders to sell dogs to the government and make the government more accountable for the amount they are paying to import European dogs. AKC also has helped bring the many interested parties together to discuss this issue through the AKC US Detection Dog Conference, first held in 2017 and the second one scheduled for August What breeds are most in demand for detection dog work? Sporting breeds are the most in demand for explosives detection work in public settings. Breeds that excel at the work include Labrador Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointers, German Wirehaired Pointers, Vizslas and Golden Retrievers. Sporting breeds have been found to be less intimidating to the public and 46

47 their keen noses and hunting ability are easily transferred to the search for explosives. German Shepherd Dogs and Belgian Malinois are still the preferred breeds for patrol work and dual-purpose patrol/detection dogs. At what age are the dogs purchased for detection dog training? The US Government and most private detection dog training schools seek older puppies that are at least 10 months old, with 12 months being preferable. Some private programs are now accepting younger puppies since it can be more difficult to get older puppies that have also had the desired early socialization and foundation training. What is a green dog and is it defined in writing somewhere? A green dog is an informal term used to describe a dog that has not undergone advanced detection work training. It is not defined in the government requirements for potential detection dogs. Most dogs presented to the government for sale at around 1 year of age are categorized as green dogs. This does not mean that a green dog has not received any training. They are expected to have been prepped for the government evaluation which includes socialization to a variety of people and places; exposure to walking on different surfaces, steps and elevated areas; and has developed toy drive for a ball, Kong or another toy. What is the government willing to pay for a puppy and at what age will they purchase them? The government will evaluate dogs starting at about 10 months of age and average price for a green dog is about $8,000. Private detection dog schools also purchase candidates and some take younger dogs, including puppies as young as 8 weeks. Prices vary from private channels, depending on age, pedigree and other factors. Where will the pups be taken for evaluation? Do I ship them or they do pick them up? The TSA and Department of Defense conducts evaluations at its training center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. It is up to the seller to bring the dog to Lackland, where the dog will be left for evaluation for up to 10 days. At this time, only brokers with government contracts can sell to the government. Private vendors do buy from private breeders and have different requirements, and many do travel to kennels around the country to evaluate dogs. Will there be any meetings or seminars I can attend to learn more and meet others? Yes, the second annual AKC US Detection Dog Conference will be held in Aug , 2018, in Durham, NC. There will be special workshops focused on breeding, socializing and early training of detection dog prospects as well as other pertinent information on the issue.
