MOTTO OF THE PHCA...a great responsibility.. To keep faith with 5,000 years of true breeding...they must shun man s natural tendency to improve which so often in dog breeding terms means to alter out of all recognition *Quote originally adopted by the Pharaoh Hound Club United Kingdom July 1971 FROM THE TOMB OF ANTEFA II (approximately 2300 BC) This is the drawing from which the Pharaoh Hound Club of America, Inc. has created it s logo. From a translation of a letter of the XIX Egyptian Dynasty: The red long-tailed dog goes at night into the stalls of the hills. He is better than the long faced dog. He makes no delay in hunting, his face glows like a God and he delights to do his work.

FROM YOUR EDITOR Due to circumstances beyond anyone s control, we have not been able to publish the Scribe for some time now. We are aware this has caused our membership to be left in the dark on issues involving the club and the breed. Two things are happening. As of the moment, the technical difficulties appear to be resolved. Also, the Board of Directors is exploring the possibility of having future newsletters published by an outside source. Whichever option is decided upon, hopefully you should start receiving the Scribe on a regular basis again. I personally thank everyone for their patience. Due to the time issues, it has been decided that this issue will be a special issue and will only contain a limited amount of information. Full coverage of the National and other special news items will be covered in-depth in the next issue. Annual Board of Directors Election We would like to announce the results of our annual election to the Board of Directors. No write-in candidates were received from the membership; therefore the slate, as nominated by the nominating committee has been elected. The nominating committee consisted of Margie Luck, Margaret Worth & Jayme Jones. Jayme Jones resigned her position on the board and the nominating committee named Linda Witt, of Northern California to assume this position until the end of Jayme s term. The board approved this nomination. Thank you to Jayme for her years of service and welcome Linda! 4

Marie Henke of Ohio was nominated and elected. She will fill the roll formerly held by Howard Foster. The Board thanks Howard for his past service and also welcomes Marie. The officers for 2011 will remain the same as 2010, as voted on by the Board of Directors. The Board is currently working on several items which will be reported in the near future. If anyone feels they need to see financial reports for the missing months, please feel free to contact the PHCA Treasurer, Jane Hodnett and she will forward the information to you. NEW MEMBER APPLICATIONS RECEIVED Lesley Schreuder & Juanita Spragg Pitt Meadows, BC sponsored by Emily Kerridge & Crystal Moore Katherine Smith New Orleans, LA sponsored by Dominic Carota & Denise Gentile Kent Aldershof Ridgewood, NJ sponsored by Emily & Sarah Kerridge Michelle Green Stoughton, WI sponsored by Thom & Pam Haig Justin Dannenbring Norco, CA sponsored by Robert Newman & John Siegel NOTE: Considering that the majority of these applications are quite old, if you have any concerns regarding their membership, please send to Sheila Hoffman, Recording Secretary, as soon as possible. 5

President s Message The new website is available. Carmen and I are still working with the programmers to get all the bugs out. This has delayed our ability to get all the information populated, but we re working with them on a daily basis. If you haven t received your user name and password for the members only section, Carmen cd@nahapharaohs.com and she ll assign you one immediately. If you previously were assigned a password, it will remain the same. Health survey: This is an annual survey. That means that everyone must update their information in The survey has been modified so that you only have to update information, not do the entire thing again. In addition, if you have no new information you must still log on and note that. Breeders: In order to be on the PHCA Preferred Breeders List, you must provide proof of permanent ID for puppies before they leave your home and have participated in the annual health survey. Preferred Judges List: We will send out a ballot to the membership later this year to update our preferred judges list. In the interim, the board has expanded the list to the top 50 judges selected by the membership because many of our top 30 judges have been utilized and/or are out of the region, making them unaffordable. The board appointed Rebecca Stephens to the newly created PHCA Club Historian position. A request was received that PHCA hold the money designated for CHIC to be accounted for separately within the club treasury just as we do for rescue funds. It was agreed this was appropriate and Jane will start this immediately. 6

MANY THANKS!!! Well, the 2010 National/Eastern weekend has come to a close. As the lead organizer, I would like to take a moment to thank all of the Pharaoh Hound folks (PHCA members and nonmembers) who came to the Cape to support this event. We had some of the largest entries in conformation and lure coursing that we have had in several years. Through the generosity of the PHCA members, we were able to offer local artisan trophies for all of the events, thus helping the local economy, and showing off local and member (Darleen Dimor) talent. Our National and Eastern dinners were well attended with great fun had by all. Our fundraising efforts were successful with the raffles and silent auction. Thanks to Jodi Lewis for a beautiful quilt, which raised over $700 for the Meet-the-Breeds display, and to Rita Sacks for the original 1 st Specialty ribbons, which, so far, have brought in $240 to rescue (I still have a few more for sale)! Our weekend was blessed with good weather. Some folks took their dogs to the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod. Our host clubs were tremendous giving us a priority ring and superior parking on the show grounds. Many thanks go out to all of the members and non-members who offered to help in any way, especially Jan Curry, Pam Haig and Tom & Mary Severino. Special thanks goes to everyone on the show committee and to the following Liza Voris for acting as show chair and overall super-organized hospitality person; to Jan Butterworth for being my local eyes and ears on the Cape, and for arranging the lure coursing event; to Rebecca Stephens for always pleading for trophy money in a very gentle way, and for being my second eyes and ears on the Cape; to Darleen Dimor for designing one of the finest logos ever for a National (Darleen we got many compliments on your work); to Jay Gentile for bringing mowing to the next level to make our lure coursing field usable; to Denise Gentile for filling in wherever needed; to Dominic Carota for his help everywhere and for dealing with a messy dining room table at home full of papers and trophies throughout this past year; to Graham Parker from the UK because I made him construct all of my kites even while he was on holiday; to Julie Gwin and P.H.O.N.E. for the supported entry and LGRA event; to Kathie Wamsley for a fabulous logo quilt that Sheila and Trip now enjoy; to the Education Committee and Sheila for a most informative lecture with Claudia Orlandi. And if there is anyone I missed, I thank you as well. Overall, I think the weekend went well. Hopefully, we have finally broken the spell on major National disasters as in the past. The East would like to rest in preparation for future events! Stephen PS If you ever need a good chuckle, be ringside when Jan Ault makes Paul go into the show ring with a suit on. Like a fish out of water! 7

Pharaoh Hound Club of America Dear PHCA Member, We are sending you this note as a reminder to make sure that you complete the PHCA health survey before the end of this year. You may access the survey at offa.org, and then click on Pharaoh Hound survey. The survey is used to gather information, and no personal information is shared. Your name and addresses are NOT linked to your responses. It is only used to record who has taken the survey. It is imperative that you answer the survey, as it is one of the requirements to maintain good membership standing in the PHCA, as stipulated in the Code of Ethics of the club. All members should take the survey whether you currently own dogs or not. To continue to be on the PHCA Breeders List, it is required that each breeder submit proof of permanent ID of all dogs placed, in addition to being a member in good standing with PHCA. To be on any PHCA committee as a member, you must be in good standing and have complied with all requirements set forth in the Code of Ethics. Renewal of the 2011 membership will be delayed or denied if the required elements to remain in good standing are not met. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Dr. Stephen Sipperly, Chair PHCA Health Committee 8

Solving the Mysteries He pauses just outside the threshold, taking in the temper and layout of the room. What does it tell him of the test to come? Have his opponents, those who designed this challenge, decided on an especially difficult puzzle? Or perhaps tried to confuse him by laying false trails? One never knows. But he is confident for he will be using his brain and his most magnificent ability - the only ability that he was born using, the only ability that would be his all the way to the end of his life. He would be using his nose, his sense of smell; incredibly strong, multi-layered, and always ready to help him understand his world. Dramatic? Perhaps but it is an apt description of an intermediate level K9 Nose Work exercise. K9 Nosework is a sport that s incredibly accessible to all dogs - young, old, even dogs with lingering injuries can play this marvelous game. The closest working dog analogy would be the work that s done by bomb and drug dogs. The National Association of Canine Scentwork is the organizing body for what they call the next urban sport for dogs. They say that dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt. The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed to develop your dog s natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. It s a great way for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy. Two Pharaohs (DC Naha Quintessential Blond, SC, HIC, ORT1 (Rooney) and HIT DC Nefer-Temu For Your Eyes Only SC, RE, ORT1) in the northwest have begun their training and passed their first Odor Recognition Test (ORT). Just as the lure coursing s Junior Courser test shows the instinct to chase, the ORT shows that a dog is adequately trained to hunt for a scent and can find it in a simple challenge. Once a dog has their ORT1, they are allowed to enter into trials to begin earning their Nose Work titles. If you are not interested in titles, it is still well worth pursuing for the simple fun that s to be had by both dog and handler. As the dog s assistant, the handler must be really in tune with their dog, provide encouragement, and proper timing on rewards. Food and toys are the common rewards. Tails are always wagging on the happy dogs in classes. Classes begin with a dog searching for cookies in boxes and slowly progress until a specific odor is introduced. Only one dog and handler team is working at a time. The other dogs in class are kept separately. This means reactive or fearful dogs feel safe while they are working and overly enthusiastic dogs aren t distracted by potential play buddies. Within a few months, the dog is happily searching for just the scent without any helpful cookies pair with it. However, cookies are always a part of it, even during trials. You ll be working indoors to begin and then will add in outdoor location and vehicle searches. Each increase in difficulty only makes things more fun and interesting for the dog and handler. But Pharaoh Hounds are Sighthounds?! Yes, but they do have great noses and wonderful enthusiasm. They love making their own decisions and want to do a good job. Truly, they are wonderfully suited to this sport. Shelley Smith, an NACSW accredited instructor in Portland, OR says, The hunting nature of the Pharaoh Hound is brought to light in Nose Work classes. They are beautiful to watch work. They are agile, quick and focused and love the work. 14

In addition to full multi-week classes, there are many half-day Intro to Nose Work seminars that allow your dog to do a little sniffing and you to do a little learning. If this has piqued your interest, please check out the links below that will provide more information: National Association of Canine Scentwork. Information about Nose Work as a sport. You should also feel free to contact Carmen Davis at cd@nahapharaohs.com or Tabitha Perry at perrtl@yahoo.com with any questions. Rooney performing a vehicle search.
