2 Isn't it interesting that the very thing that we share -our love of the Pharaoh Hound breed- is often the very same thing that at times threatens to tear our "community" apart. Whether it's at conformation or coursing, and to a lesser degree the other various dog sports in which we find ourselves competing, it seems that there is always some drama brewing just under the surface of who is angry with whom, who doesn't like or said something negative about someone else's dog...the list is seemingly endless. This is particularly apparent in a breed as small as ours. In the dozen years I have been involved with Pharaoh Hounds, I have come to understand that the old adage "every dog has his day" is certainly true. My first Pharaoh Hound was sold to me as pet quality. On the day when I plucked Logan from his crate at the airport, I had never seen or been to a dog show in my life. If for nothing other than to see other Pharaoh Hounds in person, I attended a local dog show with Logan in tow. I decided on the spot that I would show Logan myself and earn his championship in conformation. Little did I know the door I was opening...i have experienced joy and heartache competing in dog sports. (Silly me, I thought it was normal for it to take almost three years to finish a dog's championship.) But thousands of miles and dozens of shows later, my boy finished his championship...proving every dog really does have his day... When Logan passed away his name was Multi Best in Field DC Hallam's Bakhu Ra Qena BN RN MC. In the interim, Logan became a true ambassador for the breed, earning his Canine Good Citizen and becoming the first HOUND to be certified as a Federal Crisis Response dog. So while Logan's strength may not have been showing, his strengths eventually became glaringly obvious and that is the arena in which he soared. I defy anyone to show me a Pharaoh Hound with a more solid and amazing temperament than Logan possessed. I often make the joke (though if you've seen him run, it's really not too far from the truth) that when it comes to Lure Coursing, Wink is an amazing show dog. Although he thankfully knocked down a couple of Best in Fields early on, that is a dog that should only run with a helmet on...coursing is definitely NOT his strength. My point is this...there are enough varied activities out there that our hounds can excel at, that every dog SHOULD have his day. Whether it be in conformation,lure coursing, agility, rally, obedience, nosework, barn hunt, or any of the other activities available, take the time to learn what activity it is that your dog loves, and I guarantee you, your dog will have his day. Remember that we have two big events coming up: The Pharaoh Hound Club of America Eastern Regional Specialty, being held June 30 - July 3, 2016 in conjunction with Hockamock Kennel Club and Wampanoag Kennel Club on June 30 (Supported), July 1 (Supported), July 2 (Eastern) and July 3 (Supported), Show location: Cracker Barrel Fairgrounds, Wrentham Developmental Center, Emerald Street, Wrentham, Massachusetts. 4 Cover Story Wow...what a weekend! After not showing for a solid year, today Mr. Wink may have just surpassed his Pharaoh Hound Club of America Specialty win on Friday by really knocking it out of the park and winning Best Hound in Show at the Hound Classic in Silverado. What an amazing lineup of hounds, and to have an owner-bred and handled dog take this group was beyond awesome! Thanks to Team Wink, who have all played a role in this boy's amazing career...from Linda Randall, who keeps him looking beautiful, to his good luck charms, Trish Gould and Catherine O'Connor, who seem to always be there to see him bring in the big wins, to his other dad, John Siegel who loves and supports us both, to co-owners Linda Strickland Witt and Dominic Palleschi Carota, you all share in this win. A special thanks to co-breeder and co-owner Pam Haig, whom I couldn't have done this without...you're the best! What a ride so far! Robert Newman 4

5 I am always on the lookout for any and all things Pharaoh. The next big win, results from past wins, upcoming events. Anything about our breed to report on and add to the online pages of the PHCA Newsletter. Most of the information recorded in the Scribe is pulled from the information highway. But what about those Pharaoh Hounds that live lives outside the ring of competition. Never winning a ribbon or a race, surviving without a title before or after their names. Living lives best described as entitled comfort or as Ben Brodeur would say, Born Retired. My wonderful house hounds fit comfortably into this category. Their job is not to strike a beautiful pose or fly over a coursing field or run full steam through an agility tunnel. Their job is to oversee everything and live lives never far from my reach. Wonderful house companions, deserving to have their stories also shared and celebrated on the pages of the Club s newsletter. 7 Health OFA Quarterly Breed Report (January-March 2016) Health Survey The Annual Health Survey is on the OFA Web site. Please take the time to reply, even if there are NO changes. Every member should take the time and reply at some point each and every calendar year. 7

8 AKC Committee and Delegate Report March 7 & 8, 2016, Newark, NJ HEC Committee FAST CAT- Programming is almost complete. April time frame for initial launch 150 point for BCAT (Beginner CAT) Title-First Level of FAST CAT-1 point for every mile per hour achieved during the event. Dogs under 12 inches have a 1 point handicap. For example a Lasa Apso runs 7 miles per hour so 14 miles per hour=14 points. Top 20 Fastest Dogs by Breed will be accessible on AKC Website Handicap point system may have to be adjusted once program goes live Farm Dog Certification-Launch Date July 1s- The Farm Dog Certification is similar to a CGC but on a farm. Suffix Title to be awarded: FDC Lure Coursing Best Practices Discussion-On going, I am chairing a subcommittee on CAT Best Practices and will submit a summary report to the Committee for action and eventual submission to Staff Continued Possibility of GCH or Master Title for Herding Titles- Statistics Herding up 3% (407 Entries)/Total Entries 16,520 Lure Coursing Down 12% (1344 Entries)/Total Entries 10,209 CAT-Up 7% (933 Entries)/Total Entries 15,187 Earthdog-Down 8% (500 Entries)/Total Entries 6443 Canine Health Committee Recommending that Parent Club s give recognition to breeders who have at least 4 CHIC Dogs from their breeding program listed on the OFA Website Health Committee recommending organizing a current blood draw for the AKC Health Foundation at the upcoming or 2017 National. 5CC -10CC of Blood needed for current and future studies 175 Breeds in CHIC The AKC Board has agreed to provide a Rescue Portal to Breed Clubs Rescue Contacts on the AKC Marketplace Only 17% of Litters produced in the United States in 2015 are from Breeder s of Merit AKC Health Foundation funded 1.5 Million in grants in 2015 New Initiative for 2016 is to Fund Tick Born Disease Studies. AKC gave the Foundation $250, in matching funding for this initiative Legislative Caucus US Congress-The Pet and Women Safety Act (H.R. 1258/S.1559) would add federal protection for the pets of victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and dating violence. It would include Pets in protection orders. Many victims of domestic violence stay with their abuser as they don t want to leave their pets. 46 States currently have bills in process regarding domestic pets. Many of these bills are aimed at curbing dog breeding. I suggest going to the AKC Government Relations page to ascertain what is happening in your state. There will be another push this year for the AKC PAC. As the AKC cannot fund its own PAC (due to its non-profit status) all Donations to the PAC must come from individuals. They are asking that every club member donate the cost of one dog entry to the PAC. I will announce this during our National in September. 8
