3 SHOW OF THE MONTH TERRIERS at MONTGOMERY COUNTY CH. CARMICHAEL'S FANFARE repeals her wi n of the previous year by again taking Best in Show at the Montgomery County event under judge, Mr. C. K. Ric kel. At left is Club President, Mr. G. Harrison Frazier, a nd handling " Mam ie" is John Murphy for owners, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stalter of Woodcliff Lake, N. J. (Shafer photo) The Montgomery County Kennel Club show, Oct. 4th, is always the "hig hlight" of the fall show season for Terrier exhibitors. This event lacked none of the glamour of previous events, and was in fact, one of the greatest, spaked by a substantial rise in entries over previous years, clearly indicating that Terriers in general are "on the way up." Entries well up over last year in Schnauzers and Wire Fox Terriers were a fine tribute to the judges of these breeds. It was another "repeat performance" for the current Eastern sensation, CH. CARMICHAEL'S FANFARE, earning her second Best in Show at this event. "Mammie" also scored BIS at the Devon Kennel Club the day before, continuing her long string of unbroken Group wins since early September. Her Best in Show record during this period is a lso second to none, and these wins currently place her Number One in the entire country, All Breeds. Handled impeccably b y John Murphy, she is the proud possession of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Statler. In the Second spot was the Miniature Schnauzer, CH. MANKIT'S SIGNAL "GO," owned by the Emanuel Millers and handled b y Wayne Miller. Earning a Group Third was the breeder-owner handled Bedlington, CH. HOLLY- 7
4 I/ /It, y mostly... SCOTTIES by Martha Mel ekov Bell e Port Ave. Harbor City, Ca liforn ia Show people aren't the only ones with open purses for their unfortunate members; the dog people can also rise to the occasion and open their hearts when one of their own faces disaster. Recently, we received a shocking letter from the Fullers of Anchorage, Alaska. Scottie fanciers and victims of the Alaska quake. Alice wrote that a lthough they were trying desperately to maintain their 8 Scots in a kennel, while they existed in a trailer near the kennel, she was afraid that financially it would be impossible to continue keeping the dogs there. She wrote that she and Keith had talked it over and had made the dread decision to put the dogs to sleep, as soon as it became inevitable. She wrote that after losing all material things, she didn't know how they could bear to lose their beloved Scotties. It was the time to act - but for the Grace of God the same dreadful situation could occur in our Cali-. fornia, where quakes are not unknown. We called on Scottie fanciers, and contacted some of the clubs and some out-of 0 state fanciers to ask them to donate to the Alaska Kennel Club Quake Fund, which the Fullers had w ritten was helping the breeders. The call was not unheeded. A letter today from Anchorage tells that the Alaska Kennel Club Fund has paid out $ on the Fuller's Kennel bill from money received from Scottie people and dog clubs - and for the present, at least, all is well. But the emergency still exists and further help is needed. If any of y ou Scottie lovers read- 26 CH. Leathers of Carthage, Mo. ing this would like to help, a check payable to Alaska Kennel Club Quake Fund, marked in the corner, "For Scotties," can be sent to me, and I'll see that it gets to the proper party. Scottish terriers lost a true friend with the passing, in August, of Margaret (Peg) Sprankle. Peg was devoted to all dogs, but particuarly Scots. It was she who insisted, some thirteen or more years ago, that we buy a lonesome little female Scot, the only one in a litter, who became GAIDOUNE QUALITY SCOTTISH TERRIERS CH. She is handled bv Mildred Charves, for owner, Celia Desmond of San Francisco, Calif. (Roberts photo) our beloved foundation bitch, Ch. Mariglen Blithe Spirit. Peg's love and enthusiasm for the breed undoubtedly played a large part in our ever becoming so involved with it. Mrs. Sprankle had many Scots over the years but showed only occasionally, although she did train one of hers to attain a C.D. degree. We are happy that we picked her last Scot for her, Ch. Marlorain Silver Spoon, who brought her such joy by winning the STCC Specialty in "Silver" will make her home at Marlorain, now. We extend our sympathy to Ed Sprankle. It was more than just a "Major Weekend" on this year's four show Cal-Ore Circuit, as all four produced 5-pointers for the lucky winners. EASTERN NEWS by Robert A. Marshall 329 Newtown Road Wyckoff, New Jersey Twelve Scots for Stanley Dangerfield at Far Hills, N. J. on Sept. 5th, with the Statlers having a "winning day." Their Barberry Knowe Backstop was WD, BW and BOS; Barberry Knowe Frolic, WB, a nd their Ch. Carmichael's Fanfare BOB, then on to Group First and BIS, with the trio handled by John Murphy. "Fanfare" repeated her BIS the next day at Westchester, and made history b y repeating her wins at these two events from last year. There were TERRIER. TYPE 10 at Westchester, with WD, BW and BOS going to A. Harding Paul's Filbert Foremost Wish, shown by Cliff Hallmark; WB to Bert Tyron's Milady Merry Mischief, handled by Murphy. On Labor Day, the New Brunswick K. C. held their first show. Ernie Crowley had an entry of 11 with "Foremost Wish" repeating, and "Frolic" taking the bitch points. "Fanfare" made it three in a row. by again going through to BIS. September turned into a glorious record-setting month for Ch. Carmichael's Fanfare, or "Mammie" as she is known around Barberry Knowe. Shown 8 times during the month, she was Group First a t each, and BIS 6 times. In addition to the Labor Day weekend "trio," she went to the top at Lehig h Valley, Sept. 12th, Berks County, on the 13th, Ox Ridge on the 19th, and won at both Suffolk County a nd Westbury, Sept th. The Stalters' Barberry Know Backstop completed his title at West- 31
10 bury under Charles Werber. With such a superb record, we feel a little background material on "Mammie" is due. She was whelped on May 8, 1960, a nd was bred by Mrs. Ruth Johnson. She is the product of a selective breeding program and shows the value of careful attention to both objective evaluation of conformation and pedigree research on both sides of her parentage. The Stalters' Ch. Barberry Knowe Merrymaker is her sire, and Ch. Carmichael's Cornelia her dam. Under the expert hand of Johnny Murphy, "Mammie" has been condi honed and groomed to a fine edge; her natural showmanship is the final asset needed to justify a well-earned and enviable record of great wins. And now to the "big one," the STCA Specialty at Montgomery County... Mrs. Eileen Weaver judged a fine Sweepstakes entry of 28, placing them as follows: Puppies (5): First to Robert and Alma Marshall's bitch, Raab Hill Naughty Merry-Etta (Ch.
