1 46 POPULAR DOGS TERRIERS-THEN AND NOW by Anna Katherine Nicholas 16 Ridgeview Avenue White Plains, New York N 0 TWO WAYS about it, I am a real "pushover" for the terrier personality. How I do love these game, hardy, alert dogs, so "on their toes" and full of pep. To me, true terrier temperament is one of the foremost essentials in judging these breeds. And, it is my firm opinion that no important awards should ever be made to terriers lacking it. An overly docile, listless, disinterested-looking terrier simply is not a terrier... from my point of view. I often wonder how it happens that the terrier breeds hold such a very special place in my affections. Is it something brought about when I was still a baby and "Pop" Sayres raised Irish Terriers in the basement of the apartment house in which we lived? Or is it the fact that my best friend's Scottie was almost as constant a companion and as much loved as my own Pekes during my "pre-teen" days? Whatever the reason, the fact is undeniable that terriers have enormous charm for me, and that I find my assignments to judge any of them particularly exciting. Smooth Fox Terriers were the first terriers that I judged, at Atlantic City in My Best of Variety that day was the marvelous Champion Desert Deputy. What an excellent dog! Sound, well balanced, type personified! He was one of the numerous champions sired by Champion Nornay Saddler, and a credit to him. Saddler, himself, was a friend of mine, but I never judged him in the show ring. How often I admired him at home, because the Austins were folks we visited frequently with whom we shared a mutual interest in several breeds. Every nice thing you ever have heard about Saddler was true. This dog was superb and, in my opinion, stands alone among Smooth Fox Terriers. Other Smooths which impressed me among the first I judged, during the early forties, were Champion Warren Soldier and Champion Alwen Foxcatcher. The catalogue for the American Fox Terrier Club Specialty on May 15, 1942, recalls some interesting facts about Smooth exhibitors of that period. Those showing Specials at this event were Wissaboo Kennels owned by James M. Austin, Fenbor Kennels (Robert B. Neff, noted for both Smooths and Wires), Winthrop Rutherford (who was celebrating his 36th year as President of the American Fox Terrier Club), Mrs. Edna J. Rausch, John P. S. Harrison (his Etona Kennels owned outstanding champions), Foxden Kennels (Mr. and Mrs. James A. Farrell), Mr. and Mrs. W. Holden White (owners of Deputy), Barbara Lowe Fallass (one of the leading breeders), and George Hartman (Wirehart Kennels). There were 29 Smooths in this show entered by Wissaboo Kennels, plus one each from Mrs. Austin and her daughter, "Wissie," and 13 from Mrs. Fallas' Little Andely Kennel. Of the above fanciers, I believe that Mr. and Mrs. Farrell are the only ones still actively breeding and showing Smooths. Their Champion Foremark Ebony Box of Foxden, campaigned during the past few years, but now evidently retired, quite holds his own against the leading winners of the forties and, in my opinion, is the finest of the breed I've seen since Saddler. Foxden Kennels have consistently produced top-grade Smooths. The Farrells' interest has remained consistent through the years, and their record speaks for itself. Truly dedicated fanciers who thoroughly enjoy and add much to the prestige of dog shows. The Farrells are noted for Greyhounds, Lakelands and Pugs, in addition to the Smooths. However, their choice of kennel prefix, Foxden, indicates their first and probably greatest canine love. The second terrier breed I judged was the Manchester, and what an unforgettable assignment I found that one to be! In those days, there was the Rye Kennel Club, which was limited to the terrier breeds as the Progressive is to toys. This event was sponsored by Mrs. Jean Flagler Mathews and held on her beautiful estate at Rye. Mrs. Mathews o"."ned the Relgal~ ~ennels of Scottish Terriers and for years was a leadmg breeder-exh1b1tor of Scotties. Her good sportsmanship and bea1;1tiful do?s.are missed!. ~n case any of you wonder about her present 1~terest, it is h~r exqms1te gardens that are winning her fre ~uent pnzes at the leadmg Hower shows and which are pictured often m our Westchester newspapers. 1;'en years a~o, Ch. Evening Star de Luchar was becoming the frrst of the big record-holders belonging to Mrs. Adele F. Goodman and Walter F. Goodman. This is one of only two dogs so far twice ~o have won Best in Show under me and on this o~casion 'is do mg so at Northwestern Connecticut where Walter Goodman is handling and Lloyd Case presenting the trophy. Rockland County The Florsheims' Ch. Travella Superman of Harham, handled by Tom Gately, winning Best in Show from me. "Super" was a BIG winner of this period piling up a formidable record. Rockland County Ch. Deephaven Red Seal,. handled by John Murphy, wins the Terrier Group from A. K. N. on his way to Best in Show.

3 SEPTEMBER BARBERRY KNOWE KENNELS OFFERS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION CH. BARBERRY KNOWE CONDUCTOR BEST OF BREED S.T.C.A. SPECIALTY OCTOBER 6, 1967 JUDGE: MR. CYRUS K. RICKEL CH. BARBERRY KNOWE WILDFIRE BEST OF BREED S.T.C.C. SPECIALTY APRIL 4, 1969 JUDGE: MRS. JOHN T. MARVIN "Stokey" and "Ike," along with eight other fine champions are at stud at Barberry Knowe. Owner: MRS. CHARLES C. STALTER 34 COUNTY ROAD, WOODCLIFF LAKE, N. J Telephone: Agent-Handler: MR. R. STEPHEN SHAW 5 Boyce Road, Danbury, Conn Telephone: Manager: BARBARA KINGSBURY ENG. CAN. & AM. CH. BARDENE BOY BLUE August 10, February 25, 1969 With sadness we report the passing of a "breed great". The following tribute to ENG. CAN. & AM. CH. BARDENE BOY BLUE was sent to us by Barabara Dunham: His name is Simon... and he is something special. Elegant is the single word to describe him. Once in a lifetime should you be so blessed; meeting the personification of the Standard of your particular breed, be it S catties or otherwise, and this is Simon. Once seen, never forgotten. Sitting high in the stands at Golden Gate or the Garden, you recognize immediately that familiar silhouette, so undeniably his. He is all business, ready to show; asking for his wins, all the way. Never one to start a skirmish, nevertheless this little black Scotsman never backs off. He's in 'til the finish, be it battle or Best in Show. His reccrd is well known... his Best in Show and Group wins... his 39 Champion offspring, making him the all-time top producing Scottish Terrier sire... and so many Champion grandchildren and great grandchildren, that even he cannot keep count. Through these children, he has helped many small breeders produce fine champion stock that otherwise might not be theirs. His name was Simon... and now he has gone, taking with him the hearts of his owners, and his handler, and, in fact, many Scottie fanciers, who were privileged to know him. Occasionally, when watching his sons and grandsons, at the kennels, or in the ring, you'll see one cock his head, or pull himself up, when playing with another Scottie, or see a tail wagging furiously, when he discovers, to his delight... "it's a girl!", and for a fleeting moment, you see something so familiar... and then it's gone. For there will never be another Simon... he was unique, and a truly great Scottie. 7 SEPTEMBER 1969 BLANCHE REEG and the famous BLAN ART SCOTTISH TERRIERS 83 by Mildred Charves The most coveted brace win of all... the Terrier Group at the Garden! Here Ch. Blanart Barrister and Ch. Blanart Black Queen capture the ribbon at Westminster from judge Robert Sedgewick in Handling are Frank and Robert Brumby. The Blanart Scotties win again at Westminster. The year 1964, under judge Anthony Stamm. Ch. Blanart Bold Ruler and Blanart Brave Baron perform for handler Clifford Hallmark. B LANART KENNEL is perhaps the oldest and most successful Scottish Terrier Kennel that owes its success to a one-woman owner. Since the mid-thirties, Blanche Reeg has bred, owned and shown her own dogs, all American Bred. Her favorite story is chat it took her fifteen years to win her first blue ribbon! In those days, it was the opinion of all terrier folk, chat it was impossible for a woman to handle a short-legged terrier. It was a man's job, preferably for one of England's dogbreeder families or their descendants and chat all such knowledge was the prerogative 0f a small exclusive group of professionals. I have asked Blanche to give us a short history of her kennel. She believes that her history proves that a "die-hard" novice can be successful, that judges are not all crooks, and that the "game" is perhaps still 75 percent a sport. She believes that, in these days with magazines, scientific advice, history books by breeders and dog clubs with educational classes, a fancier with a desire for work at an absorbing hobby should shorten the time to five years. Also one must have some good luck along the way and accumulate a few good friends with knowledge and a willingness to advise and help. In Ohio, in the twenties, Blanche started with an Airedale as a pet; and don't we all? Airedales were at their peak and friends and neighbors started using him at scud so she decided to acquire a real good well-bred male. In those days of breeding for a puppy, that seemed the best way to get a good bitch. Then came 10 years of babies, with dogs taking second place. Blanche moved to New York in 1929, and decided that a smaller terrier would be more suitable for the family so she bought a Scottie bitch-then another-then anorher and finally got one which could have puppies! She has never had a large kennel, has usually had help but she would never permit the number of dogs to exceed the number she could care for herself, if necessary. In the busiest years, this was usually three brood bitches which might produce five litters in a year with good luck. From the beginning, she would always breed to a top-winning dog and keep the best female, show it until it got beaten and then, take it home and breed it. After too many years, this did not produce improvements. This, of course, is usually the case and a friend advised trying a strongly linebred stud at the Cabrach-Diehard Kennels of the MacBains in Closter, New Jersey. This breeding produced Champion Blanart Barcarolle, her first Champion and finished by Blanche in Barcarolle was a granddaughter of Blanart Bomber, a dog by Champion Bradthorn Bullion. This bitch and Hiscott Beloved of Blanart, a daughter of Bomber, were the foundation of the Blanart line. The line was a continuation of the MacBain line really, as Barcarolle was bred back to a MacBain dog and Champion Blanart Barrister was one of the resulting champions. At this time, of 55 champions bred and/or owned by Blanart, 27 go tail female to Beloved and 28 go tail female to Barcarolle. Barcarolle was bred to six different dogs and had 10 champions out of 23 puppies - a world's record at that time. Most of her champions were males and although never campaigned in Specials, her champion sons produced 45 champions and her champion daughters, seven. Beloved was bred to Champion Blanart Barrister, Barcarolle's first champion son, and most of her champions come from these bitches. The combination of a daughter of Barrister (son of Barcarolle) bred to Barcarolle's son, Champion Blanart Bolero, produced the kennel's best winner, Champion Blanarc Bewitching. This was the only Blanart Champion ever campaigned in Specials. Shown sparingly from October, 1958, until February, 1961, her lifetime record included only 36 all-breed shows and 13 Specialties. Her 13 consecutive Specialty show Best-of-Breed wins makes a record probably never surpassed. Perhaps what Blanche is proudest of is the pictured three terrier group brace wins at the Garden. She always felt that the terrier brace group should have a Scottish Terrier entry. In setting down some of her reflections, Blanche feels that "what may be more inspiring than statistics in a history, or in memoirs, is a relation of exact occurrences. Now, it would be hard for me to imagine myself in a breed ring with the then top professionals such as Philip Prentice of Barberry Knowe, Bob Gorman of Edgerstoune, Russell Openshaw of Relga!f, Robert Braithwaite of Madu, Frank Brumby of Brau Bricht, John Goudie of Cedar Pond, Kenneth MacBain of Cabrach and Diehard, as well as Johnny Murphy and his brother, Jimmy, all amateurs such as Howard Snethen, Edward Moloney and many others, all men. This is the competition that surrounded me at the time of my first shows in the 1940s. Frank Brumby and Clifford Hallmark finished many of my champions, but I handled most of them to their first wins as puppies and, many times, finished them myself. "Although, I have now retired from breeding, I often have a puppy around of a breeding from my line and I do have a few scud dogs to care for in my small kennel. My greatest pleasure is in seeing many dogs from many kennels, all over the country, which I know have Barcarolle and her progeny in their background."
