SCOTTIES by Martha Melekov Belle Port Ave. Harbor C ity, California Letters from breeders in all areas of the country stress the need for some sort of breeders' forum, wherein the complex problems that occasionally beset all of us can be aired. The breed clubs fall far short where breeders' problems are concerned. "Scottie Cramp," the name given a nervous disorder described as sim - ilar to epilepsy, which is peculiar to the breed and asserts itself usually in six to eight week old pups, has been described to me by correspondents in diverse areas. Never having seen it,though some reference has been made to it in British articles, we contacted the University of California Veterinary Research College at Davis, hoping to find an answer. They replied that they were familiar with it, had seen many cases, and w ere convinced that it was merely the manifestation of a recessive gene. They knew of no known cure and recommended treatment with a tranquillizing drug until the seziures became intolerable, when euthanasia was recommended. It is unlikely that the original carrier of this gene can ever be traced, SCOTTISH TERRIERS RANN OCH-DUNE CH_. LEATHERS ~EANNACHIE. fin is hed with 4 m.a 1ors, I Group Frrst and 3 Bests of Breed. She is pi ctured here scoring BOB at the Mississip pi Valley K. C. show under Mrs. Alfred LePi ne with Dora Lee Wilson hand ling. She is a homebred'. owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. l eathers of Carthage, Mo. as we have no way of knowing how many of these cases have occurred Breeders are apt to destroy the of~ flicted pups in a litter and never mention it, for fear the stud might be condemned. If the truth were known, it could be that all Scots are carriers, but only certain matings awaken the latent gene in both parents. of course, nothing is learned b y exterminating pups with this afflic tion as the scientists are completely in the dark, a s to whether the con- WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIERS One of our homebred champions STUD DOGS SHOW DOGS and CHAMPIONS always for sale OUR MOTIO: We breed what we show and we se ll what we breed. Some breeders just chalk it off to too much close family breeding, a process that undoubtedly produces better stock but can certainly introduce congenital faults. However, in the cases brought to our attention, the pups were from two unrelated lines. After all, although there are several breeding "families," they a ll fundamentally had the same forebearears. A latent gene, one of Nature's leprechauns, can awaken to find a mate in any union and no stud or bitch can be blamed. Richard a nd Jane Van Istendal's homebred, Van Istendal's Wee Willie, at 17 months of age, had a very exciting win... Best of Breed and a Group Second at the Perkiomen Valley K. Marshall 329 Newtown Road Wyckoff, New Jersey Entires picked up toward the end of the month, however, competition was keen at the shows with smaller entries. The only news from Penn Ridge KC at Hilltown, Pennsylvania, on August 1, was that Helen Gaither's CH. GAIDOUNE GREAT BEAR went up to Best in Show, the breed and group judged by Bill Ackland. The next day at Hunderton Hills KC, Flemington, N. J., only three present under E. Pickhardt, our own TROJAN MAC BEE WD and BOS, and FASHION FELICITY WB and BOB. Miss Anna Katherine Nicholas had an entry of six at Newton KC, Bethel, Connecticut, on August 22 with WD, BOW and BOB to TROJAN MAC BEE and WB and OS to FASHION FELICITY. The next day there were five at Perkiomen Valley KC, Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania, with Mr. Edward Goodwin placing Richard Van Istendal's WEE BILLIE WD, BOW and BOB, who also went on to Second in the Group WB and BOS went to FASHION FELICITY. August 29 at Newton KC, Newton, N. J., 13 present under Frank Brumby: Mr. and Mrs. M. Weisman's HIGHLANDER HEY MARTY WD and BOB; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Graham's TODHILLS PRUDENCE WB and BOS. August 30, an entry of 19 at Rockland County KC, Leydentown, N. Y., under Heywood Hartley: WD and BOS to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stal ter's BARBERRY KNOWE BACK STOP; WB to the Graham's TOD HILLS PRUDENCE and BOB to CH. CARMICHAEL'S FANFARE w i t h John Murphy handling all three. FANFARE went on to Group 1 under Henry Stoker and Best in Show under Miss Delphine McEntyre. With 32 an entry of over 1100, this adds another excellent win to her record. Entries are due for the Scottish Terrier Club of Northern Ohio Specialty Show on October 24. Chuck Stalter is doing the judging Random Thoughts... What constitutes Terrier Spirit? Our standard cautions judges against putting to winners or BOB any Scottish Terriers "not showing real Terrier character in the ring." Is, in the context of this statement, the connotation of character and spirit synonomous; does this mean an aggressive showman that carries his tail well up, his ears alert, a voice threat to the stranger next in line? A willingness to "have at it" if permitted? I w onder! The breadth of interpretation that many of our present judges use on this important part of the standard raises a question as to whether it should be clarified or at least have the STCA go on record in a more specific manner.
