I was delighted to hear of the magnificent entry of 91 dogs, w hich I was told was the biggest since the war. I thought the actions of the AKC in having a representative meet arid brief me about procedure, etc.,.a t the show an excellent idea. I thank my two stewards, Tony Stamm a nd Ralph Krueger for their help and guidance. I think, overall, the Terriers I judged were very typical a nd most of the classes gave me quite a little thought. In the Winners Dog and Bitch classes, there was very little between the first three dogs. The Specials class intrigued me; I ha ve never seen sixteen champions in the ring a t one time. Many years ago, in the la te Bob Chapman's Heather Kennel, I saw ten. I am deeply honored and very proud that the Scottie people gave me the opportunity to go over these dogs. My BOB, Marshall's Ch. Raab Hill Merry Q uite Contrary, a beautiful bitch who filled my eye, asked for wha t she got and in my opinion w ell worthy of it. My BOS, Sne then's Shieling's Sergeant, a beautiful dog of great body and coupling. He wilted a little on the final run up and paid the penalty. I would say of a number of the Terriers, their biggest fault was I did not own them. I would sug gest that attention should be given to improve eyes and ears, and I a lso thought some tended to b e long cast. Bitches, I thought better than dogs, which I thought a good sign. Overall, I think your Terriers compare favorably w ith the Terriers I have viewed in Scotland, England and Ireland. On behalf of my wife and I, I would like to say how much w e enjoyed the pre-show dinner party, and to also thank President Dr. Kirk's committee and everybody we met for their great friendliness and hospitality, a nd a lso the exhibitors for the sporting way they accepted (Continued on Page 49) FOR SALE A BEAUTIFUL LITTER OUT O F TWO FINE REANDA IMPORTS! Raab Hill Merry Quite Contrary was BOB and GR III. October 29, at Queensboro K. C., the Stalter's Ch. Barberry Knowe Blizza rd took BOB and GR II. At Back Mountain K. C. in Pennsylvania, on the 5th of November, the Morris' Ch. Scots Delight Short Stop was BOB a nd won the Group. The next day at Union County K.C. (N.J.) the Stalter's Blizzard was BOB 30 ;iftlerrillanb Jkennd.s QUALITY PUPPIES BREEDING STOCK USUALLY AVAILABLE Owner: MARTHA MERRILL 5339 Cartwright Avenue No. Hollywood, California Phone: 213-TR Handler: CORKY VROOM and GR III. The next day at Onondaga Kennel Assoc. (N.Y.) show, the Kirk's Ch. Viewpark Red Hackle BOB and GR IV. November 19, Sussex Hill K.C. (N.J.) Blizzard won BOB and GR IV. A fair bit of group placing for a good number of Scots, Indicative I believe, of the keen competition and general good quality shown in the breed these days. Random Thoughts... the end of an old year and the beginning of a new. A good time to take stock of the near past and think and plan for the future. An interesting note on the three parent club specialties: each was won by a different Scot. Off hand, I can't think of one dog that won more than two specialty events during the year, including the regional club events. With the number of specials entered at most of them I think that looking towards the future we can plan for a continuation of the keen and high caliber of competition w e saw last year. A stimulating situation and one that should benefit the breed and encourage new exhibitors and hopefully improve entries across the board. An event of note in 1966 was the publication of Tom Kirk's new book, GAIDOUNE THE GREATEST SCOTTISH TERRIERS AT STUD CH. GAIDOUNE GREAT BEAR TOP WINNING DOG AII Systems TOP WINNING DOG, 1964-Phillips System TOP SIRE, Champions and CH. GAIDOUNE GRIN AND BEAR IT Currently being shown 4 BIS-24 Group Firsts-N. Y. 13 steadily, with new dogs and owners venturing forth. It being the holiday season - the time of Christmas gifts and New Year's resolutions - let it not be said that we missed an opportunity to put in our two-cents worth for a good cause. REMEMBER your WHEATEN on Christmas! The first Christmas that m y sister Eileen had Rory, little Jennifer was three and Christopher two. Nothing had been spared. to make the children's joy on Christmas morning complete. The reaction was all two happy parents hoped for as they waded into the treq:wre trove. Suddenly, from under the tree, came a loud wail, "Santa Claus didn't bring Rory any present arid he was a good dog!" Even though Rory had previously enjoyed his brand new ball, one rubber Indian doll and one red plastic fire engine were ever after referred to as "Rory's Indian" and "Rory's truck"... to be equally shared by Jen, Chris, and their much-loved Wheaten. Therefore, the shopping is all done for our dogs: to Rory, a nice set of utility scent articles; Irish will receive hand-made jumps; Derry and Cracker will be carrying ( we hope!) brand new dumbbells, while Fionn and Aggie sport shiny new training collars and leads. And, lest "all work and no play... " should have an affect, there will be balls, bones and goodies for all. As for New Year's resolutions, several suggestions come to mind. For instance: be a member in good standing in the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America. Send in your 1967 dues promptly. If you have not done so, register your SCWTerrier in the Studbook of the club. Send in a picture of your Wheaten and report on his/ her development and personality. Enter your Wheaten in a match show or in the Miscellaneous Class at a regular AKC show. Take your SCWTerrier to class and get him/ her a title. From myself and the other Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier owners whom you know through this column, a glorious Christmas wish - "Peace on earth, good will towards men." Mostly... SCOTTIES (Continued from Page 25) my decisions. It is also our wish that any Terrier folks coming to Scotla nd would be very welcome to visit us. Thank you all for a memorable visit to a great country. Archie MacLaren Show Chairman, Mrs. Dolores Braun, reports the Specialty of The Scottish Terrier Club of Greater Washington, D. C., held Oct. 14th at Rockville, Maryland. An entry of 14 dogs, 20 b itches and 8 Specials came out for judge, Mr. Robert Kendrick, who awarded BOB to the Stalters' Ch. Barberry Knowe Blizzard. Winners Bitch, BW & BOS over Specials for 5 points to Eileen Weaver's Scots Guard The Colonels Lady (Ch. The Laird of Scots Guard - Fashion Fury) from the American Bred class; RWB to the Open winner, Mr. & Mrs. Hartley's Gadiscot Kiltie's Wee Baim (Ch. Woodhart Waterloo - Gadiscot Darlin' Kate). W1nners Dog for 4 points went to the Stalters' Barberry Knowe Wildfire ("Blizzard"-Seagraves Heather Starfire) handled by John Murphy, who also handled "Blizzard". Reserve in Dogs went to Blanche Reeg's Blanart Bold Lad (Ch. Blanart Bold Ruler - Ch. Blanart Bewitching). "The Colonels Lady" also topped an entry of 8 in the Local Class, while Best Puppy was awarded to Dorothy Morris' Scots Delight Beau Catcher. 4~
