3 Annual SCOTTISH TERRIER Issue HERE is the 1962 annual Scottish Terrier issue of Doo NEWS. We hope you find it enjoyable, and we do want to take this opportunity to thank the many breeders and fanciers who supported it with news, advertising and pictures. We believe that the several articles in the issue and the data on the current Champions will be of great value to every sincere breeder. CH. GAIDOUNE GREMLIN Owned and bred by Helen B. Gaither Wheeling, W. Va. A litter brother to Ch. Gaidoune Gavin and a third member of the litter is also finished. And now for some general news. The first item came as somewhat of a shock. The Scottish Terrier Club of K entucky, Inc., at its J anuary meeting approved a resolution suspending for an indefinite period of time, its show-giving activities. Over the past seventeen years the Scottish Terrier Club of Kentucky presented a Puppy Sweepstakes and an annual Specialty show, and the event became famous its reasons for suspending its show activities are good and sufficient but is not discussing them. It does wish to express its sincere appreciation to all who, over the years, combined to make the shows a great success. We hear that Ch. Gilkey's Johnny Come Lately, owned by Mrs. John Gilkey, left with Porter Washington for the four Brazilian Kennel Club shows, but have heard nothing as yet as to results. Mrs. Gilkey is very proud of Johnny. H e lost the Best of Breed trophy given by the STC of A by one point. His full brother, Gilkey's Johnny Appleseed won the Puppy Dog trophy, and his daughter, Ch. Gilkey's Tumbleweed, the American-bred Bitch Trophy. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Graham's Todhill Kennels, Rome, N. Y., had a great year and were extremely active. Their Ch. Special Edition is the current leading sire with five Champions to his credit and he won the STC of A annual Winning Trick Memorial Trophy as leading sire. Special Edi- World's Fair. The show will be benched and there will be a fabulous trophy list. Thomas B. Collins, Jr. is President of the Washington State Scottish Terrier Club and the Collins have finished their very first Champion, Jo-Lee Maverick, which is on the current list. He is the third Champion for his dam, Am. and Can. Ch. Jo-Lee Lucky Seal, and he finished with two five's and a four-point major. CH. VIEWPARK VINDICATOR Dr. and Mrs. T. Allen Kirk, Jr. Roanoke, Va. A well traveled little import, which the Kirks bought as a puppy two years ago in Scotland'. He rode with them from John O'Groats to Lands End, and has also traveled the breadth of this country. The Heywood H artley's Ch. Woodhart Waterloo can well be proud of his two 1961 Champions. Woodhart Wingover finished in five straight shows, all majors. M any of these Specialty shows were among the largest in the country and certainly some of the greatest Scottish Terriers competed at the events. The 1961 show with the Saturday night dinner and get-together with the W. Stewart Carters as hosts was certainly on a par with any preceding events. The Club feels tion is also a great winner and in August was Best in Show All Breeds at the Central New York event. Another Todhill Champion, Honest John, shown but a few times in 1961, topped the New England Specialty and at this same show, Bear Necessity, a young son of Ch. Todhill Cinnamon Bear was Best of Winners, repeating this five-point win and completing his title at the Greater Washington Specialty in October. Todhill Promise, a young Winning Trick granddaughter is now being shown at Eastern events by John Murphy. With all the good news there was a sad occurrance at Todhill in October, when their beloved Ch. Friendship Farm Diplomat passed away. Publicity continues to pour in regarding the Washington State Scottish Terrier Specialty to be held June 16th. More and more enthusiasm is being evidenced to make this Specialty an outstanding part of the Panorama of Seattle Century 21 Photo by Brown CH. TODHILL'S BEAR NECESSITY Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Blanche Reeg says that 1961 was a pleasant year at Blanart, not as exciting of course as the two preceding ones when Bewitching was strutting her stuff. They are hoping in the coming year to send one or two of their dogs farther afield, so they can learn how they compare with those in distant places. We were happy to note that their continuous ad in Doo NEWS had brought wonderful results and we quote: "We have been using Doo NEWS as our only media and the ad has brought us inquiries from as far west as Arizona, south as far as Louisiana, east as far as Ohio and north as far as the Dakotas. Our kennels (located in Wichita) are recognized wherever we go and we frequently hear "We saw your ad in Doo NEws." Stud services increased many fold, and we have had as many as three bitches in at one time for service. We are grateful to Doo NEWS and the choice clientele it has brought us." Had good news from Cornelia Crissey, The Scottish Terrier Club of America's annual meeting was held February 11th, the following officers being elected: President Col. Richard W. Weaver; Vice-President, Miss Betty Malinka; Treasurer, Dr. T. Allen Kirk; Recording Secretary, Mrs. John V. Kelly; Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Janet Valdes; Delegate to the AKC, Chas. H. Bud Wright from Oberlin, Ohio, is the owner of the new Champion, Poverty Hill Status Seeker, which finished his Championship with three five-point majors. Had a nice letter from Berwyn and Zelma Lungwitz of Zelwyn Kennels, Wichita, Kansas. They tell us the past year had been good to them, although they did not show as much as in previous years. As a matter of fact, there is no kennel as yet but as soon as the ground "unfreezes," building will begin. The year 1961 was a good one for Ch. Crisscot Carnival. He was Best of Breed at the Miami Specialty, won the group at Baltimore, and had many group placings and Best of Breed wins. He won the Frank G. Lloyd Trophy for the Scottish Terrier winning the most points in Best of Breed for the entire country, and also won the Jane C. Moloney Memorial Trophy for the kennel obtaining the most Best of Breed points. Carnival's granddaughter, Crisscot Circus Rider, won the 9-12 months Sweepstakes at the STCA Specialty in Qctober. Cornelia adds that Carnival could.never have made this record had it not been for his handler, Anne Hone Rogers, who worked so hard with him and kept him in such beautiful condition she was able to show him week after week. 6 British Notes By Alice Exworthy 273 Durand St. E. Lansing, Mich. J T WAS British Terrier day on both sides of the Atlantic as Cruft's, Westminster and the New York Terrier Specialties ushered in the 1962 show calendar. At Westminster, the imported West Highland White, Ch. Elfinbrook Simon, went to the top. Piloted by handler, George Ward, Simon has an impressive record of Best in Show and Group wins over the past two years. In Scottie circles, Br. and Am. Ch. Walsing Wild Winter of Barberry Knowe won the Specialty and was Best of Breed at the Garden. Cruft's entries were down with 7,311 dogs in competition compared to 7,892 last year. Cairns topped the huge Terrier entry with 107 dogs and Scotties were second (third last year) with 82. Best in Show was the Wire, Ch. Crackwyn Cockspur. Like Elfinbrook Simon he is no stranger to top awards since he has been often a group, best in show and reserve best in show winner. Postal troubles in England have been delaying the arrival of magazines but thanks to Mr. Caspersz we have word of the winning Scotties in time for this issue of Doo NEWS. Best of Breed and the dog c.c. went to Miss Sedorski's Cumnoch Clansman, a son of Ch. Kennelgarth Eros (Ch. Viewpark Vincent) and his dam is Ch. Cumnoch Sonnet. Gaywyn Viscountess won the bitch certificate. She is by Ch. Kennelgarth Viking ex Gaywyn Countess. Viking is a son of Eros which makes both certificate winners products of the same male line. In contrast to last year there seem to be few promising youngsters showing up in the interval between the closing of the 1961 season and the opening of A year ago there were a half dozen or more which were winning consistently at the smaller shows and a number which had started well at ch. shows but had not yet finished. As this season starts we find a number of the best exported and few leftovers waiting for a chance to annex a third certificate. The field is wide open and it is hoped that the new litters coming up will have, not just one or two, but many outstanding individuals which will provide worthwhile competition. Mr. Caspersz reports satisfactory progress on the publication of the Pedigree Supplement and feels that they should be meeting the planned publication date by Easter if not before. Once more the price will be about $3.50 which does not include postage and packing expense. The order blanks explain more fully and I have a supply for those who want them. 7 Improving the Breed A. Brief Study By Mrs. Dorissa Barnes, 5405 Cartwright Ave. No. Hollywood, Calif. T HE study of genetics is a vital part of breed improvement but the average breeder of one or two litters a year rarely has either the time or the patience to go into exhaustive research to acquire a working knowledge of the subject. Consequently, this brief and over-simplified study may be of some assistance in your breeding program. We will try to help you to apply some basic principles without troubling you with too much theory. We shall assume at the outset that you are thoroughly familiar with the breed standard and the ideal it represents. The absolute fundamental for breed improvement is complete honesty about both the assets and the faults of whatever Scotties you now possess. You cannot exaggerate any virtue nor excuse any fault in your own Scotties or you will never advance in succeeding generations.i R emember that, as a breeder, you will frequently be asked for advice in the future from those who purchase your puppies. Although your ambition may be to breed no more than one better litter, the puppies (particularly bitch pups) sold from that litter may be brought back to you by their owners \,\l'ith a request for advice on how to breed them. You will be doing the breed a service if the knowledge you have acquired can be helpful to others in breeding better dogs. I For the purposes of this study we will invent an hypothetical bitch which, with great ingenuity, we will call Heather sirice there must be thousands of H eathers in Scottiedom around the world. Our Heather is as follows: ASSETS HEAD FAULTS Neat, small, well- Rather round and p laced ears. D eep light eyes. Short muzzle. Perfect skull. teeth. Deep chest between strong forelegs. Broad rear. NECK AND B ODY TAIL Long back, flat ribs. Rear legs bowed. Short, thick, carried Tendency to gay well up. COAT Profuse. Soft. DISPOSITION Fearless, friendly. So we start with a bitch of considerable quality, a good disposition and some faults to be corrected. As the sire for her pups we will want, first of all, a dog which shares NO COMMON FAULT with her. We will want a short-backed, well-ribbed dog with a strong straight rear. We will want him to have a very dark almond-shaped eye and plenty of head length. Let us now suppose we have found such a dog in Angus, so named for the same reason we named our hypothetical bitch Heather. He seems to excel in all points which Heather lacks. It would seem on the surface that splendid puppies would be produced by such a mating but that is not necessarily so. We must scratch beneath the surface to get the information we need for improvement. Almost every breeder or potential breeder has read something about line and inbreeding. Line-breeding: Grandsire to granddaugh ter Granddam to grandson Half brother to half sister Great-grandparent to descendant Brother to brother's granddaughter Inbreeding: Mother to son Father to daughter Brother to sister Brother to brother's daughter Sister to sister's sori There are additional variations which can be classified within these categories but this will suffice. All unrelated matings are outcrosses and the chance of improving your stock with an outcross is a very long shot. An outcross from your own line-bred stock to another in- or line-bred strain may result in great improvement or even in an individual of outstanding excellence but if the breeder expects to retain the good qualities he already has it is wise to return to the original strain in the next generation. Inbreeding should not be attempted by the novice for it intensifies both good and bad qualities. It is quite true that in other animals, cattle in particular, the greatest advances have been made with very inbred lines. These advancements were made, however, by people with years of experience in animal husbandry and the methods employed are more complicated than we can absorb in this short study. 8 Thoughts On 1500 Champions J N 1898, Tiree became America's first Scottish Terrier champion and fifty-five years later, in 1953, Gold Finder's Commander was recorded as champion # Now, in 1961, only eight years later, we have already reached another milestone when Crescent Hill Comet became champion # The addition of 500 champions in only eight years seems a fantastic number in view of the fact that 60 to 70% of the shows staged in each point section of the country have an entry of fewer than ten Scottish Terriers. America's show system encourages the making of champions since all shows, large or small, can contribute their share of points, and class dogs do not compete against champions to obtain them. There are plenty of shows available and, granted one has enough money, persistence and the dogs needed for major points, it is possible for a dog of mediocre quality to become a champion if his owner wants it so. Fortunately for the breed they are in the minority but, even so, the annual roll call of some sixty or sevently champions is mainly a numerical record rather than a guarantee of quality sinct- all champions are rated equally regardless of where or by what means the title was acquired. Compared to America's 63 years of Scottish Terrier show history and her 1500-odd champions, England in 80 years has recorded only 448 champions. With 26 ch. shows per year, she averages 35 to 40 Scotties per show, while a number of the larger shows and the specialties may have as many as 50 to 100 individuals in competition. All shows considered, specialty and all-breed, America averages about eight Scots per show and this figure holds true for each point section. In three years not even a specialty has boasted an entry of 100 Scots, the largest of them hovering around the 50 mark. In all-breed events each section has its fair share of extremely low entries, ranging from zero to five, so that sections in themselves are no criterion of quality. As for shows with an entry of over 12, California leads the sections with 22% of her shows in that bracket. The East and North followed closely with 17%, West and South 15% and the Northwest, 10%. These figures cover only eleven months of 1961 but they seem to indicate that the sections level off fairly evenly in entries. There are many states in each section which seldom have en entry of more than one or two at each show staged Photo by Ludwig CH. GARLU HAGGIS BAGGIS Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Grow Palm Springs, Calif. However, it is quite probably true, as some British visitors to America have observed, that the best of American's Scottish Terriers can hold their own with the best in Britain and if it were possible to make an impartial comparison of our annual roll ca!j of champions with theirs, it is anyone's guess as California's Leading Sire. ~ CH. 9 to how many might fall far short of the standard on either side. Still, it should be a matter for thought when we note that nearly every Scottish Terrier brought over from England quickly gains the title and figures consistently in group and best in show awards. Well, to get back to 1500 champions and 63 years of history. What have we gained or lost along the way? Perhaps the first great loss (England's too) was the Best in Show at the Garden. Her gameness and personality won the crowd and did much to popularize Scottish Terriers in the early twenties. The last real stronghold of the Dundees was the Ardmore kennel although there was a brief revival through Ch. K innie's Bruce in The artist, Marguerite Kirmse, preserved their type in many of her lovely Scottie etchings, her kennels housing descendants of Br. Ch. Bobbie Burcott through some of the Lau riestons. They, of course, lacked the fur. nishings demanded today but they did pos sess very harsh, close-fitting jackets which needed little trimming and their heads that of Ch. Hillcote Laddie. Laddie was a handsome well-balanced dog and his fifteen champion sons and daughters who gained their titles in a day when championships were not so easily obtainable, attested to his greatness as a sire. He was a "laster" as were his progeny, a virtue not always as highly regarded as it should be in these days of quick championship goals. He passed on his own great qualities of style, personality and intelligence but to- OBEDIENCE WINNERS Donald St. Lawrence, Pasadena, Calif. On left, Cantie's Lucky Shilling, CD, by Ch. The line appears to have been lost because of outcross matings to totally unrelated bitches followed by a failure to return to Laddie's line in subsequent generations. While we cannot yet say that the numerous Ambition group has entirely disap peared from the scene it has been dwindling so rapidly that only ten of the last 200 champions claim origin from this line. Br. and Am. Ch. Ortley Ambassador was the top representative since it was his branch which lasted the longest and was the greatest source of champior.s. There are still a few male descendants which could revive the line but in 1961 no champion from this source appeared. The death CRIS SCOT KENNELS, Reg. Cornelia M. 10 of Marie Stone, which marked the end of the Kinclavens, probably dealt the biggest blow to the Ambition line for the major part of her extensive breeding program was based on Heather Asset, a grandson of Ch. Heather Ambition. Largely through the Kinclavens, but with the support of many other kennels scattered throughout the country, Asset's branch came close to equalling Ambassador's. Their productive years covered about the same length of time but 1961 drew a blank on that one too so that the possibility that descendants of either dog will revive the line is rather remote. Several years ago Mrs. Casperz expressed some concern at the ever-narrowing lines and the possibility that in the future the CH. Judge, Anton Korbel; owner-handling. Mr. Reasor. descendants of Ch. Heather Fashion Hint would be the sole survivors, over-riding all others. That possibility looms larger with each passing year. England still has a small nucleus of the Red Robin line on which to draw and America has the relatively large Barty group, but in both countries Fashion Hint dogs are far out in front as producers. Every line has its good features and its bad, with none having a monopoly of either faults or virtues. Hence the loss of any influential line is unfortuate for we are bound to lose some feature in which it excelled, a feature perhaps badly needed by the breed as a whole. There is danger in putting all our eggs in one basket for faults are concentrated when only a few individuals belonging to a closely-related group are available for breeding. We need good strong outcross lines but this does not imply the helter-skelter breeding of which we see far too much. It does mean laying out an intelligent plan of reaching out for some part of the strength of another line while holding the best of one's own by returning to it in following generations. With line-breeding the novice can make big advances in one or two generations. When looking seriously for improvement the parents and grandparents of the prospective mates must be weighed for their qualities for they will contribute as much as the parents of the proposed litter. In the simplest terms, linebreeding reduces your chances of failure because there are fewer characteristics to inherit from linebred parents. LADY LAURI E MAC RAE Dr. and Mrs. Chas. He was possessed of the same super dark almond-shaped eye which Angus also possesses. Since Jock is present in the same place in both pedigrees our chances for good eyes go zooming upward. Point by point, we evaluate each part of each dog as best we can, always paying particular attention to those qualities possessed by

14 Ch. Jock. And while the evaluatlon is in process, never forget the all-important item of disposition. And what do we do if Angus is not in any way related to Heather? We do exactly the same thing but we take into account the non-relationship and assume at the outset that the results may not be so good. There is, however, a bonus in some outcrosses. It happens occasionally that two lines "nick"; the results from the mating of dog and bitch surpass the fondest hopes of the serious line-breeder. If this happens in your breeding program, thank your lucky stars and repeat the breeding. There may be even better ones tucked away in the next litter, but don't count on it; it can happen and frequently does, but the odds are NOT with you. ~ Mrs. Kit McFall, Albwquerque, New Mexico, shown with her two Scotties-left, Morag McFall, by Ch. Matthews D esert Gold ex Matthews Black Diamond1, and right, Gilkey's Johnny H ere Now by Ch. Gilkey's Johnny Come Lately ex Gilkey's Prudence. These two will be shown by Lena Kardos, and will form a Brace hard to beat as Kit can hardly tell them apart. The good and the bad of each ancestor having been weighed, we decide to breed Heather to Angus. Having given so much time and thought to our plans, can we expect a litter of champions? Not very likely, but if with an average litter of four pups, one is very good indeed, two are rather good, while only one seems to be no improvement over what we had before we have made haste as rapidly as nature will allow us to do. Improvement is a slow process, but if in this hypothetical litter we got one very good one, we can be reasonably sure that improvement occurred not by chance but because we used the principles of genetics to improve our stock scientifically.
