"Grind!" had scored that b ig 5 pointer at the Regional Specialty at Santa Barbara, and is her sire's 20th champion offspring, I believe. Winners Dog & BOS a t Oakland, and just missing the title (still needs a single point) was Fred Politz's Charves Peter Stree t; RWD to John Desaye's Wee Doc of Rancho Milandy and RWB to Mel Fertado's Charves Midlothian, who, incidently, could have finished here too! "Rowdy" was handled by co-breeder, Lorraine Davis, and is owned by \Villia.m Buttram & J. D. Ross of Laguna Beach, Calif. for Mr. Derek Rayne, and another BOB for "Blue Ray", while "Silver" repeated as WD & BW, and "Dockie Plaid" scored the bitch points, earning the title of champion along with it; RWD to Ann Gilkey's Open Dog, Gilkey's Crackerjack and RWB to "Kissime". Every breeder sooner or later finds himself in a p osition where someone who has tried to show a first puppy unsuccessfully comes looking for a show potential pup and expresses serious intentions to show it. Often they solicit help, advice and guidance and initially work hard at those first training and grooming sessions, but then a ha lf dozen shows and various red, y ellow and other as- Carnation English, American and Canadian CH. 8 sorte;;i'colored ribbons, and the fever of exhibiting begins to abate. The novice then becomes a target for all sorts of gratuitous advice. He hears that "you can't beat the pros", that all the judges are "either ignorant of the breed or always demonstrate favoritism in their placements", that "so and so doesn't have good dogs but always wins for this reason or another." The new exhibitor, at the most vulnerable time in his brief career is literally overwhelmed by this sort of talk and many times just quits. Perhaps the dog game is better off without some of these new ones, if they lack the fortitude, the willingness to see something through. They can never make a contribution to the sport. We do, however, lose some that we can ill afford to do without - those who have both the desire to work and love for the breed. To these, the established and experienced members of the fraternity owe an encouraging word - a truthful and honest appraisal of what they must do to improve. This advice is difficult to give, it often means that you must criticize their dog or the lack of work they have done on it. But if done gently, it can give that little boost to get them on their winning way. And the satisfaction of seeing them succeed is a reward in itself. ~atada,e SCOTTISH TERRIERS ~~ CH.
