Raffle Plants Needed Is your collection getting too big? Are you looking to make room before the auctions? We are looking for some plants to be donated for raffles at our meetings. Remember, all donations/ticket purchases create some extra funds for the society, and you get a tax deduction! SHOW NEWS 153 Days to Go Think about vendors. Have you stumbled over an interesting seller on the web? Been to a show with a vendor we re not aware of? It s important that we think about this now, as many vendors have their calendars full quite early, and we might miss some good opportunities. Talk to Sue Tragesser. Goin to Pot Orchids 4 tables paid for Little Frog Farm 2 tables paid for Natt's Orchids 3 tables paid for The Orchid Trading Company 2 tables paid for Oak Hill Gardens 2 tables paid for Leo Schordje 1 table paid for, 1 more requested Purple Clay Imports 2 tables requested Enchanting Earth 1 table requested We will need your assistance during the show; sign-up sheets are available at monthly meetings. Though that special Saturday in September seems a long way off, we would like you to think about items for a silent auction on that date. This year, we are going to add a table(s) to the show. The table will be organized and staffed by Deanna André, a member of the WOS. All proceeds will be returned to the club. We ask that you consider a donation (tax-deductible!) to the auction. All items must either be orchid plants or orchidrelated items (jewelry, T-shirts, pots, growing media, ceramics, paintings, etc.) The auction will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. Payment will be by cash or check. Do not hesitate to contact Deanna at or by e- mail at paulanddeanna@yahoo.com. We hope that this will be an exciting addition to the show. I look forward to your response. Membership Meeting Minutes Membership meeting minutes of April 13, 2008 Bob Lewis welcomed members and guests to our April Meeting/Auction. Bonnie Feld is our new Vice President. Thank you, Bonnie. Orchid Wiz can be purchased for 50 percent off the published price. This is a CD for the computer. Please see Bob Lewis if you are interested in purchasing it. We had a fabulous display at the IOS show. We had over 100 plants on display. The display received a first place, Best of Classes, and the AOS Show Trophy. Tom Fitzpatrick would like to say a special thanks to Bob Lewis,, Walter Crawford, and all those members that help make our displays look so wonderful. And thanks to everyone who sends their orchids off to the shows; we always have such a variety of orchids. Bruce Efflandt mentioned that the State Fair sign-up sheets are available. We need help on August 6-10, which is a Wednesday thru Sunday, during fair hours. Drop off for the plants is on the morning of August 6; you will need to get a special pass from Bruce to drive into the State Fair. Pick up is on Monday, August 11. Judging is August 6 at 8:30 am. There are also sign-up sheets for the zoo and for volunteering at our September show at the Domes. Don t forget about our shopping bus trip on April 26. You will be visiting 4 greenhouses in the Chicagoland area. Please contact Sue Tragesser to sign up. Member price is $25.00 and non-member price is $ If anyone has any orchid names that they would like to verify, Walter Crawford will be happy to look them up in Orchid Wiz for you. Please see Walter. There were no questions on last month s newsletter. With no further business the meeting was adjourned so the Auction could begin. Respectfully submitted, Lea Pliszka, Secretary Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Thank you, Sue Tragesser, for providing your wonderful auctioneer skills to help our auction run smoothly. Thank you also to Walter Crawford for all of your help during our auction. Board Meeting Minutes Board meeting minutes of April 13, 2008 Attendee: Bob Lewis, Sue Tragesser, Bonnie Feld, Penelope Ackerman, Barbara Pliszka, Tom Fitzpatrick and Lea Pliszka The board meeting was short because the board had only one item to cover. Sue Tragesser motioned that the society subsidize the shopping bus trip on April 26. It was seconded by Bonnie Feld and voted unanimously yes by the entire board. The cost will be $25.00 for members and $30.00 for non-members. Sue and Bonnie did bring up that the best way to get members involved in the society is to have special events like this. This will be very helpful for new members to be with established members to talk to each other on growing techniques and just be together in an informal setting. With no further business, the board meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Lea Pliszka, Secretary

7 Wisconsin Orchid Society Newsletter for May 2008 Page 7 s Jumellea arachnanthe s Vanda cristata Bonnie and Ron Feld s Phalaenopsis Yu Pin Lady From the Orchidguide Digest From: Oliver Sparrow <director@chforum.org> Subject: [OGD] Coelogyne flaccida: odour I have a large C. flaccida in flower. The plant has about 40 racemes of flowers each, so there could be a thousand of them if one strains one's imagination. When unmolested, it makes the house smell of old, much used and fermenting socks. When watered, this changes to the odor of fresh horse urine, that of several incontinent and large horses. I am accustomed to orchids generating bursts of scent when 'rain' falls although I am not aware of the mechanism by which they do this but this frank stench is new to me. Has anyone else noted it in this species? C. tormentosa manages similarly to smell of pine, usually in a quick burst, when it is watered, but this cheese-shop viscosity is incomparable. Oliver Sparrow Lauren and Roy Lenz s Vascostylis Pine River Blue From: "Peter O'Byrne" <oberonia@gmail.com> Subject: [OGD] Coelogyne flaccida: odour I haven't any records describing brief bursts of scent/odor following a rainstorm, but I have a number of records of plants that smell of fresh urine. I described one species that smelled distinctly of stale tomcat urine... you probably don't want to know why I'm familiar with the stench. An even larger number smell of old wet socks. One of my colleagues more politely describes this odor as "smelling of fungus". Oberonia fungumolens acquired this specific name because you can smell it from some distance downwind, even on a dry day. I've just returned from fieldwork in Malaysia, where Coelogyne cumingii is blooming in the mountains. This species usually smells strongly of jasmine, but one particular plant that I encountered on this trip had flowers with a "rather unpleasant scent, like wet socks". It rained later that afternoon, but I was miles away by then. Cheers, Peter O'Byrne

8 Page 8 Wisconsin Orchid Society Newsletter for May 2008 From: Oliver Sparrow <director@chforum.org> Subject: Re: [OGD] Coelogyne scent The whole thing is interesting, from two angles. One is 'how' and the other is 'why'. Taking the 'why' first, the presumed object of scent release is to attract pollinators. If a plant releases a scent in the evening alone, one suspects an evening visitor. However, if it smells thus during the dry afternoon and so immediately after rain, is it attracting two separate pollinators: one that is present in dry conditions and another that only flies when humidity is high? If so, then this is a considerable evolutionary leap. Or perhaps normal, quotidian pollinators get 'bored', and need the equivalent of sexy knickers to raise their interest. In which case, why only after rain? In respect to the 'how', plainly the flower responds to higher turgor. The speed with which it does so implies that it secretes or exposes pre-prepared scents, rather than making them from scratch. I know of no record of organs that do this in flowers of any species, but perhaps readers can correct my ignorance. However, I wonder if this could not be a chemical reaction between the existing odorant and water that falls physically on the flower, rather than being taken up by the roots. I will try the experiment as soon as we have a warm day Date: Tue, 8 Apr :51: From: "Charles M. Ufford" <cmulists@surfbest.net> Subject: Re: [OGD] Orchids Digest, Vol 10, Issue 110 One thing I remember from botany/organic chemistry classes long ago was that certain fragrances are discerned differently at different concentrations. One of our professors said that the normally killer stink of the North American skunk (in its very high concentration after the animal releases it) is actually a nice, floral-type fragrance when releases in much, much lower concentrations. Maybe with the orchid, it's a case that the scent released when wet is its 'normal' intended fragrance; when it's pumping out scent at high volumes, but when conditions aren't optimum and the speed at which scent release is possible is much 'slower' or lower and not having enough of the water component, changes the perceived scent. Of course, a floral scent researcher would be able to tell if it is a case of different chemistry or different amounts of the same (which could have already been stated here and I have already forgotten -smile).
