Something we have decided to try at each meeting is to offer members a chance to show pictures and/or talk about orchids they have flowered or seen in the bush in the previous month. Karen Groeneveld discusses this more fully later in the bulletin. I would like to welcome Mark Clements to the committee. Because we had an unfilled position, we were permitted by the constitution to appoint someone to fill the vacancy and Mark succumbed to our arm twisting. Thanks Mark. Please make sure to enter your plants in the Horticultural Society s Autumn Show on March There are over 20 classes for orchids, specifically created for our members. Please support the club and help promote orchid growing in Canberra. Full details elsewhere in the bulletin. 2 New Short Talk segment for meetings & the Bulletin Have you ever had something exciting flower in between meetings and missed the opportunity to show it off to other members? Have you taken photos? Or have you been for a walk and seen native orchids flowering in the bush and taken photos? If so, would you be willing to talk briefly about it at a meeting and show a couple of photos? Karen Groeneveld is coordinating new short talk segment for our monthly meetings and would love to hear from you. We re proposing to keep this segment short, say 5 minutes, and Karen would like to hear from you before each meeting (a few days beforehand, if possible). If you don t want to stand up at the meeting to chat about your plants and bush orchid experiences, why not consider putting a few words and a photo or two together for the bulletin? These can be forwarded to the editor, Zoe Groeneveld. November Meeting - Correct Cymbidium Names I hope everyone s small Cymbidium mericlones that they potted up in November are going well. Because these are all mericlones, it means that you can t show them at first flowering as a seedling, but these are all quality orchids so you can bench them with pride. There were errors on the original tags that came with the com-pots, so please correct your labels. Cymbidium Bellissimo Pure (pendulous green flowers with yellow lip) Cymbidium Khan Flame Baroness (upright standard pink, good shape) Cymbidium Jack Hudlow Waikanae (pendulous green flowers with red lip) Cymbidium Khan Flame Baroness Cymbidium Jack Hudlow Waikanae Horticultural Society Autumn Show 1-2 March 2014 This Hort. Show is, in effect, our autumn show. Many years ago, we thought about whether we could run a show in autumn, but realised it was not feasible. The late Lila Rose was on committee of both the Orchid and Horticultural Societies and brokered a deal for us to have a big section at the autumn Hort. Show for our orchids. It s another opportunity to show our orchids and promote our society so I encourage you all to enter this year. (List of classes later in this bulletin) Cymbidium Bellissimo Pure November Judges Choice Specimen & Orchid of the Night: Dendrobium loddigesii, grown by Karen Groeneveld

3 General Meeting Minutes 6 November 2013 Members Present: 36 Apologies: 8 Visitors: 7 President Jane Wright welcomed all and outlined the planned program for the meeting Show & Conference: Jane reported on the show, which had more visitors than ever before; about She thanked Christine Finch for her efforts organising publicity and Craig Allen for securing the ABC TV coverage. She also thanked workers Karen, Ann, Jacquie, Lance, Roger and Christine. The show returned an interim profit of $5880, gross sales at the sales table amounted to about $14,500, entry fees raised nearly $4000, and the raffle $710. Jane raised the committee s consideration of a permanent change to the Wesley Centre as the venue for future Canberra Orchid Society shows. Members discussed pros and cons, and decided to support the change. Presentations: Jane presented awards from the show. Dennis Diehm was the most successful exhibitor, but as he had donated the prize for this award, Jane presented it to Nita Wheeler instead. She presented certificates to the winners who were present: Bob Bush Don Chesher Mark Clements Kevin Dawes Jan Ferris Mark Fraser and Sandra Corbett Karen Groeneveld Zoe Groeneveld David Judge Rob Rough Julianne Turner Paul Tyerman Nita Wheeler Jane Wright Jane also presented Mark Clements with Certificates of Botanical Merit from OSNSW and AOC. Cymbidium potting: Jane explained the history of three community pots of cymbidiums the society had acquired, which were now ready for potting individually. Members were invited to take plants and pot them immediately, the society providing pots, potting mix and tags for $1 per plant. Speaker: Jane Wright talked about specimen orchids, using benched plants as examples to demonstrate particular points. As an example of a good specimen plant Jane showed a Coelogyne with many racemes of flowers all the way around. A good specimen of Dendrochilum would have about 150 flower stems. Sarcochilus can make good specimen plants. Multiple branching can be stimulated by back-cutting. This is achieved by cutting part way through the rhizome to stop inhibiting hormones and allow buds to develop. This method doesn t work well with Cattleyas as the secondary growths are less vigorous. Good specimen plants can be obtained by dividing a plant and then potting several identical plants of a single clone. For plants with kiekies, collect a handful of kiekies, hold together, and plant as one. This will quickly produce a good show. (Lots of kiekies can result from overwatering.) To keep growth evenly distributed around the plant, rotate the pot onequarter of a turn every few days. Unobtrusive bracing of racemes can help achieve even spacing. Minutes of the last two meetings: were published in the bulletin. 4 Q & A: - To kill snails, leave weeds in small piles for a few nights then crush the snails every couple nights. - Temperature changes affect flower colour in Sarcochilus. - Mark Clements showed a flowering specimen of Dendrobium lohoense, a very primitive Dendrobium with yellow flowers. There is probably only one clone of this species in Australia. He also showed another very primitive Dendrobium species. The Australian group of Dendrobiums are completely different. - Rob Rough described the failure of the heater fan in his glasshouse, which could have caused substantial loss of plants. The plastic blades of the fan shattered, apparently because of the heat to which they were exposed. President s Report: Jane reminded members about the Horticultural Society show on November and encouraged them to enter some orchids. Next Meeting: The next meeting will be the Christmas party. Raffle Prizes: Yvonne Day, Nita Wheeler, Mark Clements, Paul Tyerman, Bob Forrester and Jeff Lee Lucky Door Prize: Ann McKenzie December Judges Choice Hybrid: Vanda Ken Kone Chao Praya Spots, grown by Jane Wright Members Present: 42 Apologies: 2 Visitors: 1 General Meeting Minutes 4 December 2013 This meeting was the Christmas party and did not have the usual formal structure with the normal business items. 7 Orchid Potting Workshop & Open Glasshouse 24 November 2013 On Sunday 24 November 2013, an open glasshouse and potting workshop for Society members was held at the Groeneveld s place in Queanbeyan. As well as providing occasions for members to socialise, these workshops are a great opportunity to share cultivation tips. Seeing how others grow their plants can inspire members - new and old - to have a go with new orchids or cultivation methods. And we often come away with a new plant or two to add to our collections! Not to mention yummy food to fill our bellies. November s workshop was no exception and a great time was had by those who attended. Thanks to Joan Powell who donated a number of large Australian native orchids (Thelychiton hybrids) for repotting. These plants had well and truly outgrown their pots and required a tug-of-war to split them up! Many hands make light work, and they were soon broken up into a considerable number of good-size divisions for repotting. A delicious BBQ followed, before dividing and repotting the remaining plants. The divisions are coming on well and will be available for sale to members at future meetings. The Committee is always considering ways to share the wealth of orchid knowledge within the Society, particularly for the benefit of our newer members. We would welcome your feedback and ideas for future events and activities. The beautiful, and huge, plants donated by Joan Powell It took a tug-of-war to break them into divisions!
