1 The MICHIGAN ORCHID SOCIETY MOS NEWS VOLUME 49 ISSUE IV April 2008 FROM THE PRESIDENT SHOW IS SMASHING SUCCESS!!! What a great show! Our new location proved to be a resounding success. The displays were great, the crowds were large and our vendors were happy. The weather even cooperated by not raining over the weekend and didn't get cold until the very end. I would like to thank all of the people, too numerous to name, (and named elsewhere) who helped with the show. At every stage of set-up and the show itself, we had many, many people come and help and because of that, it was easier for everyone. I would especially like to thank our two show chairs, Carolyn Butcher and Diane Burton who worked day and night to make our show a success. If you see Carolyn and Diane at our next meeting, please tell them WELL DONE! I can't wait for our show next year, I might even have something in bloom. Joe Peterson President April 20, 2008, speaker: Roger Zielinski Roger Zielinski of Raising Rarities will be our speaker for April 20, 2008, speaking on terrestrial orchids. Roger has been growing Cypripediums for about 10 years and found an easy way to grow them with good success and calls it Cypripedium culture in pots. In August, 1994, Roger founded the Garden Sanctuary to develop a public display of antique roses and 17 th century gardens. He was given the opportunity to begin this garden on the West side of the former Martin School. His interest in antique roses and gardening grew into a passion for hardy Lady s Slipper orchids and rare plants that could survive to minus 20 degrees. You can contact Roger at (419) or Education I would like to thank Don Farrelly, Dave Tigertt and Rosie Kiley for giving the classes and demonstrations at our Palm Sunday Show. Their efforts helped make our show a success! April Education Meeting: Repotting Session/Demonstration 1:40 p.m., April 20th prior to the general meeting (same location) Bring an orchid that needs repotting and repot your plant along with Carolyn Butcher. The MOS will provide a limited amount of supplies (bark and pots) but it is best to bring your favorite planting medium (premoistened, best if soaked overnight) and a clean pot to insure that you will have the needed supplies. If your orchid has a lot of roots sticking out, it wouldn t hurt to soak them for and hour or so also so they will be flexible enough to work into the new pot. Hint: bring disposable latex or vinyl gloves to keep your hands clean during repotting. If you don't have a plant to repot, bring your questions as you observe Carolyn work her magic. This is an interactive demonstration so bring plenty of questions! Kathy Mykolojenko 1

2 WHAT A SHOW, WHAT A SHOW, WHAT A SHOW!!! The weather was beautiful, the camaraderie was exceptional, and the location was easy to find, the quality of the displays was incredible, and the MOS just had the best show ever! We proved a move to a new location could be done smoothly and successfully. The attendance was more than we hoped for over 1,500 on Saturday and 950 on Sunday (and this doesn t include MOS members, judges, etc.). We were a little worried first thing Saturday morning, but by 11:30, the show was in full swing and there were people everywhere. After the initial rush, attendance was even and steady for the rest of the weekend. People were still coming in at 4:45 PM on Sunday. Thank you all for helping to get the word out. Not only were all the displays beautiful this year, but there were more of them due to the presence of the Mid America. Our members and visitors really seemed to enjoy all the lectures throughout the weekend -- we ll have to make them a regular part of the show from now on. Every time I looked into the auditorium, the lectures were in full-swing and well attended. The raffle was very successful and our hard-working staff at the Information Table signed up over 35 new members quite an accomplishment! This really was one of our best shows ever! I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped with the show. This is our largest undertaking as a society, and I think this year was a record turnout of volunteers. Thursday night set-up, Friday welcoming and set-up, and Sunday tear-down went very quickly and smoothly. We even had some new members help out at the shed. It s great to have so much help - thank you one and all. Thanks also to the non-member Master Gardeners for all of their help. There were some individuals who worked for several weeks prior to the show helping to make it a success. Here s a special thanks to them Joe Peterson and the Board for believing in us and making the decision to move the show; Harvey Divinagracia for designing the bookmarks and posters and keeping the website up-to-date; Glenda Lask for taking on the job of Chair of Judging; Yvonne Whitely for arranging all the crews to work on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, for heading up the Clerks, and for manning the Information Table all weekend; the Farrelly s for taking on the task of planning the MOS exhibit; Rene Gatny-Smith for being Trophy Chair; Kathy Mykolejenko for handling registration; Gail Lift for typing and retyping registration schedules; Eileen Otto, Patti DeMaire, and Carinne Korany for standing at the front door for two days greeting the visitors, and for making more poles (we needed every one). If I missed anyone, please forgive me. Lastly, I would like to offer a huge thank you to Carolyn Butcher. The MOS gives me the title of Show Chair, but she works as hard as I do at putting the show together. Carolyn was the one who found our new location and was very instrumental in getting the Mid America to hold their spring meeting here. I couldn t do this job without her reminders and encouragement thank you, Caroline. You re great to work with. Oh, and for those of you who have a computer, check out the AOS Website. At the time of this writing, our show was mentioned on the first page with pictures! Just go to: Good job, everyone!!! Diane Burton 2
