1 San Rafael 4-H November Newsletter PLEASE check with Caryl to verify that you have turned in all the forms 4-H requires and that you have paid your membership fees. THANKS! Community Service Project: In October our project was collecting eye glasses to donate to OneSite. If you still have old glasses to donate please bring them to the November Business Meeting. For November our Community Service Project is Toys for Tots. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy. We will deliver them to the Marines Toys for Tots program. See s Candy Sale October 1 November 14 The Marin 4-H Council is holding a See s Candy Fundraiser. Forms were handed out at the October Business Meeting. The funds raised will be used to finance county-wide events, scholarships, and awards. As percentage of the money our club raises will be returned to the club for our own use. If you are participating, PLEASE turn in your orders and money (cash or checks made out to San Rafael 4-H Club) by November 14 - we have a Veterinary Science Project Meeting that night so you can bring your orders and give them to Caryl or Alexandra. November Events Wednesday, November 2 Marin County 4-H Council, 6:30 pm The meeting will be held at the Pt. Reyes Station Fire Department. Any adults and youth are invited to attend. Sunday, November 6 Rabbit Project Field Trip, 2:00 pm The rabbit group will be taking a tour of Benny Central Rabbitry in Concord. Woodworking Project, 2:00-4:00 pm All meetings will be 2-4pm at 125 Crane Drive in San Anselmo. See more information below under Project News. 1
2 Monday, November 7 San Rafael Business/Arts & Crafts Meeting, 6:30 pm We will be planning our December Community Service Project at the Business Meeting. We will be making soap at our Arts and Crafts meeting. Sunday, November 13 Archery Project Contact Mischa McCormick if you are interested in the Archery Project. Monday, November 14 Veterinary Science Project Meetings, 6:30 pm Sunday, November 20 Dog Project Meeting, 1:00-2:00pm The Dog Project will be meeting in the Oak Room at the First Congregational Church of San Rafael (the same location as our Monday Meetings). If you are planning on joining the Dog Project, PLEASE complete the survey at the end of this newsletter and to Caryl hodges@usfca.edu by November 5. Monday, October 21 Monday, November 28 No meetings; Thanksgiving Week Rabbit and Robotic Project Meetings, 6:30 pm San Rafael 4-H Project News Cavy Project: At our October project meeting we took turns drawing a cavy (guinea pig) and labeling the body parts. We learned that showmanship is a way to conduct a health check of our animal(s) and learned how to clip nails. Junior Leader Project: The Junior Leader project is off to a great start. Our Junior Leaders had their first project meeting and discussed what kinds of leaders members want to be. We also discussed the plans that the Jr. Leaders have for their projects and worked on goal setting. Poultry Project: In our September meeting, the group did project planning. The group voted strongly to work on chicken showmanship and Poultry Bowl this year. We made "chicken busy blocks" out of unflavored gelatin and chicken scratch. The chickens went crazy for the busy blocks. In our October meeting, we began working on poultry showmanship. We learned about chicken nail clipping. We had our annual Halloween chicken costume contest. Thank you to Teen Leader Jenna for helping coordinate the costume contest and for tabulating the results. The group did a project on sorting and discussed all the different ways that objects can be sorted. We then did "Draw Like A Scientist" and "Communicate Like A Scientist". This was a lot like playing "Telephone". Some kids drew objects in the room. Then, different kids wrote descriptions of the drawings and a third group of kids made drawings from the verbal descriptions. We compared the original drawings and the final drawings and reflected on what the Space Program would be like if our Robotics Project was building the rockets. Vet Science Project: The Vet Science Project got off to a great start in our October meeting. We discussed the basic needs of all animals. The group generated a great list: food, water, shelter, cleanliness, fresh air, and play. We discussed ways to play with animals from rabbits and chickens to dog, cats, and horses. We made toys for cats, dogs, chickens, rabbits, and cavies. We made extra toys that we then donated to the Marin Human Society as a community service project. Woodworking Project: The Woodworking Project Junior Leaders had a meeting. They have a lot of great plans in store for the Woodworking Project this year. Some of the projects they would like to do are a jewelry box, a catapult, a step-stool, a tool box, a chicken carrier, and a picture frame, just to name a few. Please join us! The dates for the project are 10/22, 11/6, 1/21, 2/4, 3/24, 4/28, and 5/19 (You only need to attend three of woodworking meetings in order to complete the woodworking project). All meetings will be 2-4pm at 125 Crane Drive in San Anselmo. IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND a woodworking project, you MUST let Mischa know. He will only purchase materials for the number of people who RSVP.
