1 Gold Diggings September 2016 MHGRC Newsletter Presidenťs Message Marcy Werner For those of you who were unable to attend the Speciality and the Western Regional, you missed a wonderful time and two spectacular events. Kudos to Kathy Bourland on the Western Regional. Everything went off without a hitch in spite of the weather Friday afternoon -- more on that later. The items for the silent auction were overflowing the tables and the leash sale was very successful. Her T shirt sales were also very successful. The Speciality on Thursday was also well planned and organized. Congrats to Angela McLean and Lauren Relay for putting this together and getting everything organized. Late Friday afternoon, during Best of Breed judging a very strong storm hit the area. Torrential rain, high winds and thunder and lightening. This forced us to cancel the membership meeting. The grounds were saturated and in places there was standing water 6 inches deep. The temperature dropped and it was wet and cold. We not only cancelled the meeting, we cancelled the pot luck -- and when the members cancel something with food involved you know it had to be bad. 1

2 Meeting Discussion Items Some of the items I had hoped to discuss at the meeting were: Linda Stranahan has volunteered to chair the nominating committee. We need people to volunteer for several positions -- Agility Rep, Conformation Rep, and Treasurer. If you would like to serve, please contact Linda at linda-stranahan@comcast.net, It would be nice to have some new faces on the board so please consider serving. The next meeting will be on September 23. Please attend since Linda will be presenting the slate of board members to be voted on during the November meeting. This is your chance to add someone to the slate. I need someone to volunteer to collect field photos of dogs and handlers -- only those currently working in field -- these photos will be submitted to GRCA for their field issue. It would be nice to have a good representation of MHGRC dogs doing the work they were bred to do. If we can collect the photos, GRCA will put together the spread for us. The deadline is fast approaching, so please contact me at mwerner974@aol.com if you are willing to collect the photos See you at the meeting on September location will be announced shortly. Special recognition to Sue Oviatt for her amazing English Lead sales, Vicki, Marci and Claire for the amazing Can do attitude, brainstorming abilities and a great MAF social event. Bruce Mclean for the Thankless task of Grounds and Xinding even more electricity for Goldenland. I also want to THANK all of you who supported the Western either by Silent auction, Western Shirt sales, trophy donation, exhibiting or by simply asking if you could help in some way. 4 Agility Report By Michele Janowiak Our MHGRC Agility Show in July once again featured a VERY SPECIAL REUNION of very special Goldens and their owners from 4 different states. The four Golden Retrievers sitting in the back come from one litter. All who ran did amazing in the agility ring. In the back we have SAM (Pat Cross, MN), DASH (Joe Lewis, TX), TORCH (Linda Nelson, NE), and BOLT (Lori Copsey, WI). Their mother, JOZIE (Lori Copsey, WI), is lying down right in front of them. Off to the left and lying down, is Mom s brother, QUEST (Joe Lewis, TX), uncle to the siblings. July 2015 was their first time at our show in a wonderful reunion of the puppies and their owners. This year was the SECOND time they got together.. We look forward to seeing them again next year! 6 Field Report By Nancy Ego Report on the Mile Hi Hunt Test, Stillroven Farm, June 25 and 26, 2016 The Mile Hi Club put on a very successful Spring Hunt Test this year. Leslie Anderson served as Hunt Test Chair and Kathy Janda served as Hunt Test Secretary. We scheduled the test early enough for people to plan their summer schedule to include our test and we had the test listed on Entry Express by February, Additionally, by scheduling our test the weekend after the Colorado Women s Hunt Test we got an additional benefit: a number of amateurs as well as some pros came up from Texas and New Mexico to stay in Colorado for the whole week and enter both tests. Folks seeking to qualify for the Master National could use these two tests as potential qualifying events. We offered all three flights. Our Master flight filled within 24 hours and we also got a very large entry in Junior. During the weekend and afterwards we got lots of compliments on how well the club had run the test and on the positive atmosphere created at the line by the judges. The judges also mentioned what a pleasure it had been to judge these dogs and work with our club. Master Judge Pluis Davern made a short speech at the conclusion of the Master test. She stressed that this is an amateur sport and talked about the joy and pleasure of watching amateurs who were clearly learning to train and run their own dogs. Thank you, Pluis, for all your support and your positive comments. It was truly fun to run under you. Thanks so much to all the club members who turned out with good spirits to help with this event. All of us made it a great success. And thank you to Leslie Anderson for chairing! There were doubts we would have the spring test at all until she stepped up to do this. 6

7 We had a very nice double header of training days in August before the Western Regional WC/WCX and JR/Sr fall hunt tests. Held at Kenny Trotťs Horsetooth Retrievers, it was well attended and the dogs and handlers all enjoyed themselves. The club needs to replace the bungies for the wingers and I have been unable to find Tangelo Tossers. I believe they are no longer in business. Is there anyone who could or would be willing to make them? 8 MACH BR s Never A Dull Moment UDX2 OM MXB MJB MH WCX ADHF Carbide James and Jean Herbert Nebraska Dog and Hunt Club, Unadilla, Nebraska on August 13, 2016 Carbide completed his MH with 4 straight qualifications. He is completely trained and handled to all titles by Herb Herbert. Not too shabby for a 6 year old! A huge thanks to our training group, Sandy Whicker, Cherylon Loveland, and Lolita Shaffer, and his breeders, Jennifer Shepherd, Jamie Beckett, and Vickie Carson. Richwood Sophie s Magic Moment MH UDX2 OM2 WCX VCX The Mile Hi Hunt Test was also Puk s 8th Master level pass. And he has now entered his first field trial and begun his field trial career. Puk entered the Qualifying Stake at the Fort Collins Field Trial August 5, This shows that it is possible to put a beautiful dog in a field trial and it is possible to win a Championship with a dog who is also running in field trial. Leslie Anderson And Puk took winner s dog at our specialty, I believe the 5 point major held! Firemark's Moonshine at Rocky Top, Shine Fred and Dorothy Plumer MHGRC fall test: junior Hunter, Western Regional: WC Zaniri Off to the Races CD SH WCX RA, Dasher Owned and handled by Francie Pusateri Dasher earned his Senior Hunter title at the Colorado Woman s Retriever Club hunt test June 18th at Stillroven, then earned a 5th pass at the MHGRC hunt test June 25th also at Stillroven. Dasher the earned his GRCA Working Certificate Excellent title on August 14th at the GRCA Western Regional Specialty near Wellington. Springcreek Oaks Rocky Mtn High RN, BN, TD, JH "Travi" Owned by Kay Walker Travi finished his CD at the Roaring Fork Kennel Club, Eagle CO with an impressive 3 first placements in 3 shows! Timberee s American Honey Emmy Owned by Sandy Mcfarland Was 1st in Novice B at the Mile -Hi Specialty Timberee s Silk Teddy UD. JH. OA. OAJ. OBHOF. VCX Teddy Owned by Sandy McFarland Was 2nd with a 98 in Rally Advanced at the Western Regional Specialty Fly'N Hi's Tropical Child "Keiki" Owned by Mardee Kayser Keiki added two more RAE legs at the shows in Greeley. She won High Combined in Rally Thursday afternoon at the Irish Setter Trial, and Friday morning at the Western Regional Specialty placed third in both Rally Excellent B and Rally Advanced B. 9
