2 Gold Diggings Sept/Oct 2010 Pg 2 President s Corner Greetings everyone! Well can you believe it just about 1 month to the National. I hope that everyone will be lending a hand where they can. There has been and still are many areas where help is needed. We want to put our best foot forward and the best way to do this is to be thoroughly prepared and then to have lots of help at the event so that the participants (including us!) have a wonderful time working and playing with their dogs. Sandy Whicker is the general volunteer coordinator so either contact her or the specific event chair if you can lend a hand. And please we aren t keeping score here on who did what that s always a clear path to turmoil within a group. Some people work quietly behind the scenes and we don t even know how they have contributed while others take on more public tasks, so don t be too quick to comment on what it appears others are or are not doing if you see something that needs to be done, jump in there and do it! We will have a membership meeting on September 17 th up at Northglenn Community Center. It is an important meeting from the club operations standpoint as the Slate of Officers for next year will be presented along with any nominations from the floor to be placed on the ballot. The nominating committee has begun their task of trying to come up with a slate, so please consider taking on one of these jobs. They really aren t that difficult. I expect there will be a bit of a lull in excitement about jumping in to do something for the club but these are important times to insure that we continue being a active group of people with the best interests of the Golden Retriever first and foremost in our hearts and minds. We have many events already in the planning stages that will take place in 2011 so the world doesn t stop on October 3 rd!! Please consider contributing to the club by being an officer or director in Lastly, let s all help each other during these next few weeks. I m sure there will be some trying and emotional times for some of us during the final planning and presentation of the 2010 GRCA National Specialty. I know we will survive this thing, and if we remember it s about the dogs and not about us. I m sure the friendships and relationships that we have forged with fellow club members and Golden people from around the country will stand strong for years to come. It s a great opportunity to have the National so close, I encourage all of you new and old to come out, support the event, help when you can, but most of all have fun with your dogs! Warren

3 Gold Diggings Sept/Oct 2010 Pg 3 Mile Hi is throwing a party! The stage is set, the plans have been made, everything is ready. All we need now are the guests. And good weather, but we won t even go there! This has been a very fast three years from spring of 2007 when we said, Sure, Mile Hi can host the 2010 GRCA National Specialty, to now when it s actually going to happen. I can t praise you all enough, you ve done everything necessary and more besides. It s been a true pleasure to work with all of you. Thanks for putting up with all my little reminders (a better word than nagging), for finding out answers to questions I didn t even know we needed to ask, for taking on projects and carrying them through to completion. You ve been a great group, but honestly, I expected no less. I wouldn t have agreed to chair this if I didn t know that Mile Hi could and would do it and you all came through with flying colors! So when the first bird is retrieved at the field trial, when the first glove is picked up at tracking, when the first dog clears the jump in agility, the first Forward is heard from obedience, and when you see dozens of beautiful dogs shining in the sun as they circle the conformation ring remember that YOU made this happen. Have fun at the event you ve earned it! 5 Gold Diggings Sept/Oct 2010 Pg 5 Outstanding Obedience... What we did on our summer vacation... The dogs, spouse and I took a trip to the Duluth, Minnesota 4 day dog show cluster in July this year. There are 4 days of conformation and 3 days of obedience and rally. The show site is a large, air-conditioned building with covered parking right in downtown Duluth, and the best part, 5 minutes from the beach! We only did obedience, but it was a friendly show, the judges were nice and we had a good time. We did not come home with any new titles, unfortunately. If you have never been to northern Minnesota, I highly recommend it. It is a very dog-friendly place. We were able to take our well-mannered and picked-up after dogs to many, many beaches, off lead and never a cross word from anyone. A lot of people had their dogs with them and all the kids seemed to love the dogs, the adults enjoyed them as well. Lake Superior was quite warm for Lake Superior and we all went swimming, the water was very clean as were the beaches. We did find one beach in town that was a little over-used, but mostly clean sand or small rocks prevailed. The mosquitoes were fine as long as you went inside after dark. The lake trout was excellent and the scenery stunning. There are some great woodland trails as well, you would want very well trained dogs as there are moose up there, not something you d want your dog chasing after! We did a little bit of trail hiking, but mostly stuck to the beaches. We also talked to someone staying at the cottages we were at on the North Shore who was taking his golden retriever on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, not something we felt was do-able with 4 goldens! And now brags: In the Rally ring, BJ and his handler, Michele Janowiak, earned their RN and RA in 6 shows. They accumulated two 1st places, one 2nd place, two 3rd places and one 4th place on the way. In Obedience, BJ and his handler, Michele Janowiak, earned two 3rd places in Novice B at Mountain States DTC trial. Sheryl Cammarata has returned to the obedience/rally ring! And her George daughter: Karleigh s Grateful Endeavor, RN, is sporting a new RN. Sheryl and Gracie got two legs at Terry All KC (80, 86) and finished her title Saturday July 17th at Roaring Fork KC (80). In Sheryl s words: All errors were HANDLER ERRORS! Grazie is a Fab obedience dog and I am her handicap! It s great to see you putting titles on the other end, congratulations! ~~Nancy Ego

10 Gold Diggings Sept/Oct 2010 Pg 10 General Membership Update We are actively seeking new members, if you know of a new golden owner or just a friend with a golden who has never checked the club out, please send them my way and I will send them our information. We will need lots of helping hands for the BIG EVENT coming soon. Respectfully submitted, Gloria Hale Over the A-Frame & Through the Chute... Just a few brags for this issue......gotta save up for the next issue after the National!!!! Flyways Capt'n BJ Hunnicutt and his handler, Larry Janowiak, earned their MX and MXJ in June in Agility. They then went on to do a clean sweep at the MHGRC Agility Trial in July and earned 3 more Double Q's with a 2nd place and three 3rd places. Treasure s Report We have filed for an extension on our taxes. This will allow us to remit the form for the change in our exempt tax status and then file our tax returns under the new status as "application pending" -- so it should allow us to file our 2009 taxes under the new status. That will certainly help in keeping the entry fees as non-taxable earnings for the club.

11 Gold Diggings Sept/Oct 2010 Pg 11 Well, summer is almost over, and hunting season is already here! That's right, dove season started September 1, and we actually still have doves in CO because we have no had really cold nights yet. But they are coming soon, so if you can, get out and hunt for doves soon. Why would you want to hunt for doves? Well here is one reason, especially if you have puppies - they are small, and easy to retrieve. There is a myth out there that doves have a "bad taste" for our dogs. It is just not true. Any golden should have no problem retrieving doves. As a matter of fact, one of our members gave me an opening day hunting report and said that his 11 week old golden puppy had made a great retrieve of his first dove, and he was quite proud of it. This is really a great time of the year to get your golden out in the field. The temperatures are coming down during the day, but water temperatures are still very nice for swimming (for the dogs, and also for us if we are bold). Finally, it is still light for an hour or so once you get home from work and I guarantee you can get rid of some of the stress of your day if you just take the time to get out there with your dog(s). So where can you go? That is the big question for most of you that live along the front range. Obviously there are the well know dog areas at Chatfield and Cherry Creek. You probably know what potential issues you can encounter at these places (crowding, dog fighting, disease issues, etc.). So what about lesser known locations. I bet with just a little looking, you can find areas within a very close distance from your house where you could get out and do some training. Most of these places will be privately owned lots that are waiting for future real estate development. They can be quite small (as little as an acre), and they are usually quite safe from vehicle traffic and other intruders. You should try to find the property owners (there are usually for sale signs) and ask them for permission to train on their property. If you ask, they will almost always say yes, but you have to ask. What should you do for training on these small properties. Well it somewhat depends on the age and training level of your dog, but at any level you can always run marks. You can never run enough marks. There is a saying that a dog is not ready to perform at it's best in field competitions until it has retrieved 10,000 birds (that's right 10,000). So you can never run too many marks. But you are alone, you do not have someone else to train with you! Okay, there are still things you can do. With a leash and a collar, you can tie your dog to a solid object, go out in front of them a comfortable distance, throw a mark and then go back and release the dog to retrieve the mark. If they are steady, you should be able to tell them to sit and do the same thing by throwing for them. This is always better than doing nothing. Do not worry, it will not ruin them for running more traditional marks with someone else throwing. What about your neighbor kids? I bet if you ask one of them (probably 8 years old or more) they would love to throw for you, especially if you pay them a little. Anyone can be taught to throw. You do not need a gun or really any other tools other than a whistle. Just get out there and do it! We have the National Specialty coming up later this month and you should all come out to either help or at least visit the field events. There will be many of the best goldens in the country running in the field trial at Stillrovin, in Mead, north of Denver. These dogs are truly world class athletes, and you may not have another opportunity to watch goldens at this level close to home for many more years. Don't be shy because you have never done this before, you will be welcomed by all. I would love to meet you if we have never met, and introduce you to some of the really great people from around the country that will be in our back yard. Well, enough from now from the Field. Take advantage of this great late summer, early fall time and get out to work your dog(s). Wayne Reporting from the field...
