Gold Diggings 2013 WINTER EDITION OF MILE HI GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB z Meeting on January 18 Dogsports, 4300 Forest St. The Building will be open at 6 pm for any & all types of training. Program on K9 Nosework will 7 pm. Directions to the meeting are on page 5 GRNews As I know not everyone receives the GRNews, the 2012 MHGRC's "Hunting Goldens" ad from the Golden Retriever News field edition is on MHGRC's website (MHGRC.com). A special thanks goes to Sylvia Donahey-Feeney at GRCA for doing such a fantastic job of creating the two page layout and making the ad a success again this year. Sally Sjobeck nnn 2012 Holiday Party Was a huge success, Delicious food, good Company, the Gift exchange especially fast paced and exciting. HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all Mile Hi members and their furry friends! I know once those days start getting longer, no matter how imperceptibly, my mood lifts and I begin thinking of the joys of spring! I may be jumping the gun a bit. The Mile Hi Board met on December 1 for the purpose of sketching out the calendar of club activities Thank you Bruce & Angela McLean for Hosting this years Party. Wishing every fun, laughter and some new titles in the New Year! Your Editor Kathy PRESIDENTS COLUMN for the year to come. We were joined by Barb Branstad and Ruthie Nordahl, who attended to assist in making the transition smoother for the new officers and directors. The meeting was extremely productive and I was impressed with the skills and experience people bring to the Board. Continued on the next page...

Presidents Column We are fortunate that Bruce Evashevski, Mardee Kayser, and Randy Watson have volunteered to join the remaining members of the Board. We are so fortunate to have Keith, Laura, and Monica staying on the Board. And especially Angela McLean who brings incredible financial knowledge to our club money and keeps us in line as far as spending! We begin the year with our January 18th meeting at Denver Dog Sports, 4300 Forest St. beginning at 7. Directions will be found elsewhere in the newsletter. Actually, we will be renting the building for an hour prior to the meeting for those who would like to come and train - so the doors will open at 6. The facility is huge so you can work in obedience or run the full agility course which will be set up. At 7, Donna Milnek will give us a program about Nose Work and a short business meeting will follow. I will investigate the possibility of bringing in a light dinner and let you know before the meeting if food will be available. The website DenverDog Sports.com will give you more information about nose work AND detailed instructions for visiting the facility. Our March meeting on the 16th at Jeffco, will be the usual breakfast and business meeting and then a Goldens only match to follow. On Sunday, Don and Vickie Carson will once again present their program on grooming which has been so popular in years past. Members who have experience usually come with extra tables and equipment and assist newer people in spiffing up their canines. This session stresses how to keep your golden looking clean, tidy and healthy! As I mentioned, it is one of the most popular programs we ever present because Don and Vickie pretty much put their hearts into the project. This August Mile Hi will be hosting its first back-to-back specialties with Angela McLean and Lauren Relay Rudzek chairing. In response to member interest, we are also looking at conducting a CCA on the Saturday after the shows. More details will appear elsewhere in Gold Diggings! Elsewhere in the newsletter, you will find a basic calendar for the entire year. Expect events to be added and subtracted as the year progresses. One of the events that may go away is the HUNT TEST! Although this is always popular and anticipated by many members, no one has stepped up to chair the event. Members have to begin to realize that if they run in these events year after year, there comes a time when they have to step up and say they will take charge. You can t always expect someone else to do the work and not contribute. If no one volunteers by the first part of January, then we will not have a hunt test in If you wish to know what chairing this event entails, please drop Keith Winch a line and he will be happy to tell you! Thanks to everyone who took over the organization of the match at Jeffco December 8! I wasn t able to be there but understand that it was a wild success! I did stop by for the Introduction to Field Events that Keith Winch put on Sunday. Wow - it seemed to be well attended and much appreciated. Dogs and handlers were getting plenty of help and many opportunities to work with their dogs. Thanks, members, for taking on this weekend and running it to perfection!

Kathy Frizell Nominating Committee A notice from the GRCA nominating committee is attached below. This was read at our MHGRC November meeting. A letter from the AKC Humane Fund was also received requesting donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy. A motion was made and seconded to donate $500 to the AKC Canine Health Foundation and $1,000 to the AKC Humane Fund for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Motion carried. Karen has a 2-year old Golden and is not sure what their interests will be. This was Emily Russell s second meeting, and she was accepted as a member of the club. COMMITTEE REPORTS Agility Laura Gillice was unable to attend, but will have information on the April agility trial in the Newsletter. Conformation No report Field Keith Winch reported there is interest in the December 9 workshop for those new to AKC or HRC hunt tests. It will be informal and include hunt test rules, the different levels, and introduction to some of the equipment used. Our WC/WCX will be held June in conjunction with the Flat Coats WC/WCX. Sandy Whicker volunteered to chair along with Don Freeman. The test will be held at Stillroven. The MHGRC hunt test is scheduled for the second weekend in September, but we still need a chair. If no one volunteers, there won t be a test. Keith reported there has apparently been some confusion on the proposed change presented at the Master National that would allow clubs to limit the dog entries Obedience Christopher Watson volunteered to bring the trailer to Jeffco on December 8 for our Fun Match. Kathy Janda and Kay Walker are in charge of Obedience, and Monica Keracik and Francie Pusateri are in charge of Rally. OLD BUSINESS Specialty Angela McLean and Lauren Relay have a preliminary budget for the Back-to-Back Specialty at Island Grove on August All the major volunteer positions have been filled. They would like to have a theme for this Specialty. So if you have an idea, contact either one of them.

OLD BUSINESS Con$nue% The Slate of Officers presented at the September meeting was elected. President -- Anne Shannon Vice President Bruce Evashevski Secretary Mardee Keyser Treasurer Angela McLean Agility Rep Laura Gillice Conformation Rep Randy Watson Field Rep Keith Winch Obedience Rep Monica Keracik NEW BUSINESS Barb reiterated the proposed change to the Bylaws regarding Associate members. The original intention was for members who were geographically too far away to attend meetings. The only difference between an Associate and a Regular member is that the Associate cannot vote nor can they hold office. Barb proposed that should we keep the Associate status it would be for those geographically too far from the Denver Metro Area. The requirement for a quorum would change from 15% to 10%. A motion was made and seconded to approve this Bylaw change. Motion carried. Barb will submit the proposed Bylaw changes to AKC for their approval. MISCELLANOUS At our Goldens Only Fun Match, Emily Russell volunteered to do a CCA on Sunday, March 17. Deb Ascher volunteered to help her. Chris Zink will be in the area for a seminar the last weekend in June. Longs Peak Obedience Club will have Bridget Carlson here on May 18-19, A very special congratulations to Kathy Frizell and Casey for winning the Qual at the National Specialty. There were 68 dogs! Barb Branstad recommended Anne Shannon for a lifetime membership, and Warren Frizell recommended Barb for a lifetime membership. (Neither lady knew this was going to happen.) The two lifetime memberships were unanimously accepted. This is well-deserved for two very special people! On a personal note, working with both of you has been more fun than I ever expected! I ll miss our s! The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m. &irec$ons ' (e January Mee$ng at Denver Dog Sport) Glad you asked for direc0ons b/c many folks want to just use GPS and although it is really easy to find, for some reason GPS gets them all goofed up with the one- way frontage roads along I- 70. I- 70 to Exit 277 (same exit number whether coming from east or west), Holly/Dahlia/Monaco Exit. If coming from the west, go through stoplight at Dahlia, go about two blocks (huge Safeway Distribu0on Center on your right) and turn right on Forest St. just immediately past Safeway. I am second building on the len Forest St. Park in front, on street, on side of building or large lot behind building. Coming from east just a liqle more complicated b/c of one- way streets, but Exit 277. Go through lights at Monaco and Holly, then turn len at Dahlia to go under freeway. Take an immediate len on Dahlia, then again follow to just past Safeway Distribu0on and take a right. Second building on right Forest St.

At the Master Na+onals: 712 dogs originally entered from all over the United States and Canada but 690 dogs actually started the compe00on in Alabama. Of the 690 that started only 221 completed the tests. That is a 32.0% pass rate. Of the 690 dogs started, there were 44 Golden Retrievers. Of those only 9 passed but this shows a posi0ve increase as the Golden s pass rate is increasing. Go Golden s!! This is a great event. The next MN test (Sept. 2013) will be held in Fall River, Kansas. Hope to see many more Golden s there. Field Report By Keith Winch MHGRC sponsored an introduc0on to hunt test at the event center at Jeffco fairgrounds on Sunday December 9 th. From all accounts and feedback, this effort was a success. We had 19 paid par0cipants with a mix bag of experience levels but all seemed to have fun and both dog and handler learned one or two things about their training regimen plus Anne also aqended with her new 8 week old puppy. MHGRC is co- sponsoring with the Flatcoat Retrievers a WC/X cer0fica0on test during the weekend of June 22 nd and 23 rd at S0llroven Farm. Sandy Wicker has volunteered to chair this event for MHGRC. She has draned her judges but will need help in the other commiqee posi0ons. Please step forward to assist her. The MHGRC annual hunt test is in jeopardy of not being held. To date of this wri0ng, no one has stepped forward. If I do not hear from anyone by February 1 st, 2013 we will not have a hunt test in I am working with AKC to sponsor a Retriever Hunt Test judge s seminar for the early fall. We need ~40 people to sign up before it is economical for us to hold this. I have sent s to all the clubs in and surrounding our state with a handful of responses. I know of a few MHGRC members that need the test but if any of you have not contacted me and want to aqend, please let me know soon. This report doesn t have to be just about accomplishments, I would be happy to introduce your new field pup within or other noteworthy item so please send me something for our next Gold Diggings. When ing me your brags or items for the newsleqer please send to my keithbwinch@msn.com account and in the subject line state, Gold diggings newsleqer. I travel onen and get vast amounts of diverse s. I do not want to miss anyone s brag so you can help me by honoring this request.
