NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB Golden Notes Elected Officers: President Laura Finco Secretary/ Treasurer Tammy Ballew 281 Dry Creek Rd Hollister, CA VP Performance Christine Hsu VP Breed Robin Baker VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Jennifer Masterson Director Ken Blanchard Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Letty Regan WINTER 2016 Reasons to Celebrate VOLUME 47, ISSUE II The seasons are changing. Weather is colder and splashes of rain descend. There s an air of celebration and joy. We reflect back on what the year has brought us and look towards where we might go. In looking back over the last twelve months, my mind cannot stop reliving everything we have been through. Of course, the focus GRCA National It feels like so long ago but given all of the energy and talent that went into the National, it truly was just a moment of time ago. From start to end, this event took over life at NORCAL GRC. Fundraising efforts took an early lead, ranging from garage sales to bake sales to workshops and seminars. Members used their collective talents and I am not sure there were many who did not contribute in some way. Critical to the success of the National was assembling a lead team that could complete their individual events or tasks without micromanagement. National Chairperson, Eileen Oshiro put together a truly gifted group of committee members. I am sure there were some who did not believe that it would all come together, but Eileen kept the faith and as Dory would say, kept on swimming. Inside this issue: To be honest, I had my own doubts about the location, knowing the rustic environment would be off putting to some and without a solid entry, NORCAL GRC was at financial risk. Alas, the team used the charm and uniqueness of the El Dorado Fairgrounds to highlight the theme and capitalize on the Strike Gold theme. The site decorations were perfect backdrops for fun photo opportunities. And the use of hog washing stalls as bathing facilities added to the rustic charm. Everyone used what was available and made the most of everything. I truly appreciated the cross club support NORCAL GRC received from other GRCA members. Even though there were fires that required some special attention, I think everyone came away with good feelings; participants left having had a good time and the committee members left feeling accomplished...and probably quite relieved! By Laura Finco; NORCAL GRC President From the President 1 Editor s Bark 2 New Members 2 National Chair Report 3 National Specialty Update 4 In Memoria 5 Hounds for the Holidays 5 Members Brags 6-7 Membership Renewal 8 We have not gotten a final accounting, but at last communication it looks like NORCAL GRC not only covered all expenses Club Information 9 associated with hosting the National, but will have a bit of a profit. No club takes on a National looking to strike it rich, but knowing that budgets were made and expenses stayed in the black is a solid sign of a well run event. As president of NORCAL GRC, I want to personally thank Eileen Oshiro for her dedication and strength in taking on the mammoth. And although we had a great time and all, let s not do this again for at least another twenty years! Con t on next page

GOLDEN NOTES Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, MX, MXJ, MXP, OF Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras Editor s Bark con t from page 1 I got to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds on the Thursday before the 2016 GRCA National was to start. We set up our trailer on the ridge near the Maintenance Building, having a full view of the fairground lawn and pavilions. It also was fairly close to the infamous YELLOW gate. The last National I was involved with was in 1995; the last time NORCAL GRC hosted the National. At that time it fit in the courtyard of a hotel and there was little need for grounds as primary role. So little did I know the enormous task I was taking on when I agreed to be Grounds Chair for our 2016 National. Thankfully, there were other GRCA members who were able to assist and use their talents to make sure that tasks such as RV parking, ring placement and setting were do-able. Kurt Macualey became my person early on. I had little sense on how to determine the best placement for the rings, but Kurt flew out early, looked at the fairgrounds, and basically mapped out the entire National single handedly. When we finally got to the fairgrounds, that first day was spent becoming familiar with nooks that would eventually hold over 100 RVs, the spacing that would host a variety of vendors, and still have room for an All Breed agility trial. Those of you who know me, know that I had every intention of spending the weekend working the agility trial. And you also know that I barely got my golf cart over to the rings! My friends teased, calling me The Firefighter because of all the little hotspots that needed attention. Still, everything that needed to get worked out was worked out one way or another. The goal was for those who came to enjoy the National as exhibitors and spectators would walk away never knowing anything other than a good time. I think we were pretty successful. Page 2 As with any event of this magnitude, the reflections takes us to ways we could have done things differently. Hindsight always shows us ways it could have been better but when each day is broken down and each part of the National is evaluated, I am fairly confident that NORCAL GRC can be proud of what we accomplished. I want to thank everyone who took on the challenge of hosting the National. There was quite a bit that happened behind the scenes and not all of it visible. For me personally, one of the highlights was the bagpipes at the beginning of the Best of Breed competition and watching my wife take on the Rally ring for the first time. How does hosting in 2045 sound? The following folks have applied for membership: Davis Richmond, Lincoln, CA (Sponsored by Scott Woodland). Davis has one Golden: Heads Up Sonic Boom (Gracie). He has attended numerous Live Flyer Days over the past couple of years and attended the WC/WCX in He is interested in Obedience and Field and is looking forward to volunteering at field events. Patricia and Katherine (daughter) Biermayer, Concord, CA (Sponsored by Jennifer Masterson). Patricia and Katherine have two Goldens: CH Masters-n-Lee's Koda Sam Splash Biermayer THDA CGC (Koda) and Masters Walking on Sunshine THDA CGC (Emma). They are members of Canine Comfort, Valley Humane Society Therapy Dogs and Therapy Pets of Oakland. They have attended the NorCal Specialty and Fun Matches in 2014 and They are interested in Conformation and in volunteering in Hospitality. Mike Orange, Half Moon Bay, CA (Sponsored by Ed Ryska). Mike has one Golden: Emberain 'a Huntin We Will Go. He attended multiple Flyer days in 2016 and is a member of AKC. He is interested in Field Events and in volunteering at Field Events as Steward and with Equipment/ Grounds.

GOLDEN NOTES Would just say that we are all happy that the National Specialty is over and was enjoyed by all. Many members of Norcal and our friends from around the country and Canada helped to make it a success. It truly takes a village, or in the case of National Specialties, a country to get all the work done. Kurt Macauley from Michigan was our RV chair extraordinaire; Nancy Talbott of Southern California was the Conformation Chief Ring Steward and Junior Showmanship judge; Anne Shannon from Mile-Hi GRC took on the raffle, Rebecca Casperson- Perkins from Missouri did the room and premiere seating raffles, Ane Brusendorff from Evergreen GRC coordinated the club-sponsored breakfasts, Sharon Shilkoff chaired the Tail-gate party, last year s chair Rob Bedford and his wife Patty McCabe came out from Ohio to work at the field trial and WC/ WCX! Kathy McIntyre, who is not a NORCAL member, chaired the VST tracking test and took on the Parade of Titleholders! Leslie Blythe from Wyoming once again was the Answer Gal. Many others helped and have our appreciation. We had many NORCAL members who deserve special recognition - Dee Dee Anderson - major fund raiser and Obedience chair; Debbie Claussen - logo designer, merchant and food vendor chair, welcome wine tasting and bbq chair; Laura Finco - grounds; Letty Regan - worker and judges lunches all week; Terry Southard - merchandise chair; Dimity Mueller - volunteer coordinator and sales; Colleen and Brian Phillips - merchandise transport and sellers; Tammy Ballew - raffle and decorations chair; Debbie Tandoc and Julie Cairns who chaired the Field Trial! Nancy Kelly and Susan Stratton handled the WC/ WCX; Edwina Ryska the NORCAL and National Specialty agility trials; Laura Franchi handled the rosettes not only for our National, but for 2015 as well! Sylvia Donahey and Robin Baker found beautiful trophies that everyone was coveting. Christine Hsu worked with all of us to keep the website appealing and up-to-date; Janet Peacock kept our finances in order; Cindy Garcia took care of the grooming spaces. Patty Page 3 Kostakis chair rally and helped with obedience too! Suzanne Bria managed a double CCA. This is just a partial list so you can see how many hats we were wearing! You did your jobs so I didn t have to worry about them! Or not much :-) One of the worse jobs of any dog show is the cleanup! So thank you Alex and Martha, Laura Finco, Laura Franchi, Sylvia Donahey, Tammy Ballew, Jeanne Hanlon, and Trish Miller for you help after the show cleaning up. Special thanks to Laurie Jordan-Fenner and Michelle Jorden for getting breed trophy sponsors so quickly We are still working to finalize the numbers, but we are in good shape! Photos from Agility, Conformation, Obedience and Rally and WC/WCX are available for viewing and purchase at sirius6photo.com. (CCA photos are available in Dropbox. Christine can download the group photos to the Norcal s website if you and she wants). Thank you all! Eileen Oshiro, Chair 2016 GRCA National Specialty suntorygr@comcast.net

National Agility Report Norcal Agility trial and GRCA national specialty are now over and a fond memory for us all. The 2-day prenational agility trial was a great success and enjoyed by our Golden and our all-breed friends. Everyone enjoyed the extra days to run their Goldens on the grounds and get ready for the big event. The GRCA Monday event was very well received and we greatly enjoyed putting on the big show for our out of town Golden friends. I want to thank everyone for stepping up and helping out. When the time came, everyone was great they jumped in and did the job, no one need to be asked. I want to thank our all-breed friends who came back to help us out on Golden Only Day, without them we would still be there running that huge 20-inch class. Special thanks to the raffle ladies Mary Ann Graziano, Michelle Pressel and Rhonda Caldwell for putting on a fantastic raffle which raised a nice chunk of money to support our national. The raffle had some great donations thank you everyone who contributed. A big thank you to Linda Lang for all her hard work on hospitality. Scott Woodland for stepping in and being the the all-around guy helping at every turn. To Ed Ryska my support staff for the last 3 years of planning, Big thank you! Many thanks to Cindy Hult who handled the awards table all day long. Pat White and Julie O Rourke (who has Collies) for being chief ring stewards. So many people to thank, I can go on forever. Edwina Images from the Hunt and Field

In Memoria NORCAL GRC has lost yet another wonderful member. Jayne Hurkman had not yet turned the corner of 60 years of wisdom. Way too young. She waged a courageous battle against Stage 4 Ovarian cancer starting the week after the National entries closed. She had volunteered to be the Chief Track Layer for the VST and was sooo looking forward to that, as well as, showing her Baxter in the Parade of Title Holders and the Veterans Class. Unfortunately the chemo treatments were too much for her body to handle and she was unable to attend the National. Jayne had been involved with several of her dogs in conformation, obedience, and her passion was tracking. Jayne passed away with her husband Richard, Cousin Teresa and her beloved golden Baxter by her side on November 24 th. I am forever thankful for having Jayne in my golden life and all her fun smiles and enthusiasm. Jayne is in Rainbow Bridge with her Marilyn who passed away earlier this year at a little over 15 years old. Ovarian cancer is truly horrible disease. It is called the silent cancer as many symptoms are misdiagnosed until the late stages of the disease. If Jayne could pass on one word of wisdom to us all it would be -- If there are weird symptoms in your body make sure to keep pushing doctors for an answer that makes total sense quickly. And I m sure she would say that goes for our golden dog buddies as well. Hounds for the Holidays! Holiday times can be joyful or a source of stress for all of us, and that goes for your dogs, too! With some advanced planning and a little training, you can make things more festive and fun for Fido and less stressful for you! Things to Keep in Mind Throughout the Holiday Seasons: Dogs can be very sensitive to changes in their environment and routines. When family members take time off from work and school, house guests come to stay, or other visitors roll through the home in droves, you need to try to preserve a few of your dog s routines, such as regular meal schedules and walks, exercise or play sessions. If there s considerably more activity than usual, plan some quiet times for your dog as well. The added stress and excitement of holiday festivities can increase your dog s thirst too, so make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink. If your dog is the excitable or anxious type, he might benefit from an overthe-counter remedy, such as Rescue Remedy, to help keep him calm down and relax. Ask your veterinarian about his or her recommendations as well as how much you should use and how often. Holiday Décor: Dog Safety Issues Holiday trappings help to maintain the merry mood but can be fraught with dangers for your dog. Here are some things to watch out for: Christmas Trees Tinsel, popcorn strands, and other garland-like decorations can cause serious internal injuries if ingested, and these are just the kinds of things that curious dogs can t resist. The ribbons, string, and other wrapping accessories found on gifts can be very problematic as well. These can lead to choking or strangulation for a curious pup. Water at the base of natural trees can contain anti-freeze and other preservatives that are deadly to your dog. All Christmas trees should be firmly anchored to the wall or ceiling to prevent it from being toppled by an inquisitive pooch. If you can t avoid all these things, try encircling your Christmas tree and gift display with an exercise pen to keep your dog away but still allowing you to enjoy your holiday cheer. Electrical Cords Make sure these cords are well-secured, so your dog doesn t make a chew toy out of them. Consider using cord containers or running them through PVC to avoid having your dog chew on them when you cannot supervise.

First we took advantage of a trip to visit Dazzle s sister to hit a weekend of dog shows in Lethbridge, Canada, at the end of May. Dazzle handled all the new experiences of showing away from home better than I ever expected; we showed 4 times in 2 days and came away with 4 first places, 4 High in Trials, and High Scoring Novice Aggregate with an average score of 199. We also discovered that Dazzle loves hotel rooms, especially if she has a playmate to bounce back and forth with on the beds not exactly the preferred form of exercise away from home, but still a bonus to have a happy traveler. Dazzle also recently completed her RN!
