All training classes have moved outdoors. Please check the weather conditions the days/nights of your training to make sure you dress appropriately and bring the necessary equipment for your dogs. After all it is WI and Mother Nature has given us a good variety of weather so far. The MDTC elections for 2018 was postponed due to a very rainy night! Four Officer positions: President (Kathy Gibowski), Vice-president (Mari Pavleje), Secretary (Chris Niver) and Treasurer (Kathleen McNerney). Board member positions: Linda Roman (3yr term) and Kris DeFelice (3yr term). On Election night, we need a 15% quorum of members in good standing present for voting to take place. The election will be held on June 27th at the General Membership meeting at 8:00pm, please plan on attending the meeting. Congratulations to our 1st Pair of Heeldown winners: Sue Bronson with Chela and Tanya Roeglin with Mabel. The next Heeldown date is June 17th, you and your pup could be our next winners! The MDTC AKC Obedience show will be held on June 9th and 10th at the Western Waukesha County Dog Training Club in Ixonia. Come show our support at our Obedience trial. We will have a raffle and good food. If you participate, you can see how all your hard work in obedience can pay off. Some important club events to mark on your calendar for this Summer: Our annual Summer Picnic will be July 22nd, at the outdoor Clubhouse on the training grounds for you and your families to attend. The club will be providing the main dish, along with soda and water. MDTC will be at the WI State Fair on August 10th. We will have a booth set-up and will be performing obedience demos in the K-9 Sports Arena in the Southwest corner of the fair grounds. We will also be in the Case IH Coliseum, performing in the Frisbee and demos. MDTC will be attending Barktoberfest at Estabrook Park on September 15th and Fromm Fest on September 22nd. Stay tuned for more information. These events are free, and a lot of fun! MDTC has some upcoming demo s and exhibitions the month of June. If you are available to come and show off your skills with your dog, please consider signing up for a few of them. The sign-up sheets and information about each event are listed on the clipboards hanging at the Outdoor Clubhouse. Please continue to submit your photos for the 2019 Milwaukee Dog calendar. Come rain or come shine, the elections must go on! Please plan on attending the June 27th General Membership Meeting at 8pm. A quorum of current members is needed for the elections to take place and we did not have it in May. If it s raining June 27th, drive over and vote anyway, it s dry inside! Outdoor training means a new season of Heel-Downs! For those handlers unfamiliar with this event, it is an informal competition within the Club to demonstrate your dog s heeling ability. This event happens monthly, culminating in a competition among all of the monthly winners to find the annual winner. It is a fun chance to show off! Here are your upcoming Heel-Down dates: 6/17 7/15 8/12 9/16 10/14 (of course these may be subject to change) There will be two winners each month. The Super Heel Down will be announced at the end of the season. NEWSLETTER DEADLINES If you have an article for the Newsletter, the following are deadline dates. If you send an article after these dates it will go in the following month s newsletter, which means it will probably be outdated! No exceptions! 3 MILWAUKEE DOG CLUB General Membership Meeting Wednesday, May 30, 2018 The meeting was called to order at 8:05 PM by President Kathy Gibowski. SECRETARY S REPORT: No corrections to April s minutes. The club did receive a thank you card from Mike Brauch in response to a card of condolence he received from the club. PRESIDENT S REPORT: The AKC show is June We still need volunteers. Congratulations to the first Heel Down winners of COMMITTEES DIRECTOR OF : Kim Rinzel reminds everyone to keep their dogs hydrated and to remember that white or light colored dogs can get sunburn. The next Heel Down is June 17. AGILITY: Daryl Stuppan reports that will begin training outdoors this Saturday. FLYB: Kathy Gibowski reports there will be a tournament at the end of June. AKC: Daryl reports that there are 100 entries for each day. We are doing well on sponsorships, raffle items need to be at the outdoor club by this Sunday and we still need one additional volunteer for Saturday and Sunday. MEMBERSHIP AND SALES: Dale Eastman reports there are seven enrolled in the new class on Sunday. BUILDING & GROUNDS: Evan Emmons reports that the grass is growing fast but Sam and Charlie are keeping up with the mowing. Because people were entering Central Bark looking for the dog training club there will be a banner hung on the fencing at the indoor facility and a sign above the door directing people to the entrance. SOCIAL: The June Social Sunday is cancelled. GOOD & WELFARE: Condolence cards were sent to Mike Brauch, his aunt passed away and Diane Howland, her sister passed away. A card was sent to Deanna Witte. Dan Laack has a new puppy. A condolence card was sent to Peggy Brunner who lost her dog Ellie. EXHIBITIONS: Mari Pavleje reports that this Sunday we will have a booth at West Allis A La Carte. State Fair is August 10. We have agility and obedience teams scheduled and we will need vaccination records for agility exhibitors. We were only allowed to purchase 50 tickets directly from the State Fair and they will be needed for our exhibitors and volunteers so there will be no tickets to sell to members as planned. FUNDRAISING: Mari reports we have worked five Brewers games and a Kenny Chesney concert. At the concert we had $13,000 in sales and netted $1,200 for the club. Because we now self manage we are able to earn 14% rather than 10%. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Daryl reports that two properties were considered including a viewing at 7500 N. Teutonia. They are both out of our price range. Mike Brauch asks about properties he alerted the club to on Richards. Kathy says the realtor is looking into them. Mike Brauch asks about the Audit Committee. Kathy explains that due to work obligations the auditor was not able to begin working with the Treasurer until recently. NEW BUSINESS: Kathy reports that Jennie Neumann will be moving out of state and will need to retire from the board. The board elections scheduled for this meeting will be postponed; a quorum of members not being present. 4 DOT REPORT Welcome to summer! Here are a few reminders to set you and your dog up for success: Handlers must wear closed-toe shoes that are secure on their feet while on the field. Please wear long pants on the field as often as you can (I know it can be hot but ) Watch your dog for signs of overheating. Don t push through. Take a break. Seek some shade and provide water. Dogs can get sunburned, too! Plan and prepare! Tips for Keeping Your Pet Safe in the Heat 1. Never, ever leave your pet alone in a parked car on a warm day. Not even for a minute. On a warm day, the temperature inside your vehicle can rise quickly into the danger zone. Leaving windows cracked doesn t drop the temperature inside the vehicle. Leaving your car running with the air conditioner on is dangerous for a whole host of reasons. Leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle in extreme heat or cold is a criminal act in several states and municipalities. Most statutes have rescue provisions that allow certain individuals for example police officers, firefighters, animal control officers, store employees -- to do whatever is necessary to rescue an animal trapped in a vehicle in extreme temperatures. On summer days, it s best to leave your pet home where she can stay cool, hydrated, and safe. 2. Don't walk or exercise your pet on hot pavement. This can be a tricky one to remember (unless you re in the habit of walking your dog barefoot), but it s extremely important. Not only can pavement on a hot day burn your dog s paws, but the heat rising from concrete or asphalt can quickly overheat an animal that lives close to the ground. Also don't allow your pet to stand, walk or rest on hot outdoor surfaces like sidewalks or parking lots. 3. Exercise your dog during the coolest parts of the day. In most locations, this means early in the morning or after sunset. Try to stay in the shade during daylight hours and no matter the time of day, don't overdo outdoor exercise or play sessions. Even on an overcast day or in the evening, a long period of physical exertion in hot weather can cause heatstroke in your dog. 4. Provide plenty of fresh clean drinking water at all times. In addition to overheating, your pet can become dehydrated very rapidly in warm weather. A good general guideline is that a healthy dog should drink between ½ and 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. See you on the field! ~ Kim Rinzel

5 FUN EVENTS TO MARK ON YOUR CALENDARS 6th Annual Wisconsin Humane Society s Tails on the Trail event on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Veterans Park along Milwaukee's lakefront! This run/walk offers both 5k & 1-mile routes, and all proceeds will support homeless animals right here in our community. Go solo or bring up to two of your dogs per person! After the race, it's time to party at our post-race festival. Meca Vest A K-9 Fest! - July 21st. This dog friendly event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals in Greenfield, WI, US. 7th Annual Walk Run Wag! July 14th. This dog friendly event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, WI. Bring Fido out to this fun event! Spots available for walkers (2-mile), runners (5k), and those who want to support MADACC but want to sleep in that day. WI State Fair August 10th-MDTC will be at the WI State Fair.. We will have a booth set-up and will be performing obedience demos in the K-9 Sports Arena in the Southwest corner of the fair as well as agility Demos in the coliseum in the afternoon. Visit the fair and see your club in action. 7th Annual Barktoberfest. September 15th. Free admission!!! Rain or Shine!!! 6 HELP FIND A NEW HOME FOR MDTC All eyes and ears desired in search of a new MDTC Home! The Milwaukee Training Club is searching for a new home on behalf of its members! The Property Search Committee is in full-swing, uncovering every viable opportunity available for our future home. With all eyes and ears on the "prize" we will find our home! As you're out and about and you see or hear of anything, please keep these goals in mind for our future home: 1) SIZE: Ten-thousand sq. ft. minimum with 100 feet contiguous open space for obedience, agility and fly-ball training; 2) PARKING: Space for 50 to 100 cars, on-site or close-by, evening and weekends; 3) GREEN SPACE: At least two acres is desired, but a grassy potty area is the minimum; 4) LOCATION: Milwaukee County is preferred, but a neighboring county my be considered. 5) ZONING: Light industrial or commercial; 6) BUDGET: APPROXIMATELY $350, AND SOME GREAT NEGOTIATING.
