We had a large group of members and their families attend the party this year. Thank you Kim and Brad Rinzel for organizing this event for us and to the Pulaski Inn for the excellent selection of food. The Instructor of the Year award was presented to Sue Bronson, the Outstanding Service award was presented to Sam Emmons and a Lifetime Membership was presented to Tori Baldwin. Congratulations all! Claude Szpot not only won the free 6-month membership at the December general meeting, but again won it at the Holiday party. Congratulations! I made a special announcement at the Holiday party in regards to our DOT for Obedience, and would like to pass it on to the rest of the members. Fred Kauer has decided to step down as our DOT, it has been something he has been contemplating for several years now. Thank You Fred for all of your hard work and dedication over the years. With that being said, I would like to announce that the new DOT, is Kim Rinzel. Kim will officially take over the reins on February 26 th with the start of the new obedience class. She brings fresh, new positive ideas to our obedience program which means changes are on the horizon, in a good way. There will be some upcoming exhibitions in the next couple of months. The club will have a booth at the Pet Expo on February 4 th, so please stop by to say hello and win a prize from our Plinko game, made by Dale Eastman. The Milwaukee Sports Show is on March 8 th 12 th, we will have a booth again this year. Signup sheets for the obedience and agility demos will be available only at the Indoor building. Please consider signing up for a few of them and show off your skills to the spectators. The Milwaukee Brewers games have been picked and the training has started. If you would like to volunteer some of your time to help with this very successful fundraiser for the club, please contact Mari Pavleje. The Milwaukee Dog calendar is starting back up again. Please start going thru your photos of your furry friends, we are looking for a variety of pictures. Examples are: agility, flyball, tracking, nose work and obedience action shots or hiking in the park or lounging in your backyard or your personal favorites. I would like to fill up the calendar with all of our dogs!! I still have the pictures everyone sent to me last year, so don t be afraid to submit more. Please submit your photos to mdtccalendar@milwaukeedog.com. The calendar will be available for purchase by fall, so everyone has time to submit their pictures! Stay warm and have a Happy Valentine s Day! And I hope that the Ground Hog did not see his shadow! Kathy

3 THE SPORTS SHOW IS COMING! The 2017 Journal Sentinel Sports Show is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, March 8-12 in the Expo building at State Fair Park. We'll be part of the Main Stage entertainment line-up again this year. That means we'll need plenty of people and dogs to demonstrate just what a trained dog can do, both in obedience and agility. The sign-up book will be at the St. Paul location only this year, so be sure to check it out and sign up for a shift or two in our booth. We'll also have a list of rules and guidelines for exhibiting available in the sign-up book. After you check out the rules and guidelines, if you have any questions about whether your dog would be a good candidate for the Sports Show, please talk to your instructor. Mari Pavleje would be happy to answer any other questions you have. You can talk to her at training on Sundays and Wednesdays or call her ( ). We're also looking for people to help us set up our booth on Tuesday, March 7th, and take it down on Sunday the 12th. We usually meet at the St. Paul building around 9:00am on Tuesday, load up our vehicles, and head to the Fair Park. We're usually finished setting up our booth by noon. On Sunday, right after our last show (usually in mid-afternoon), we load up everything from the stage area and take it back to the St. Paul building. We can't take down our booth until the show is over at 6:00pm. For both set-up and takedown, we are especially in need of people with trucks or minivans. If you can help us out on either of these days, please contact Mari Pavleje. BREWER GAME FUNDRAISING It's time to start planning for our annual fund-raising efforts at Brewer games will be our 19th year working for Sportservice at Miller Park and, before that, County Stadium. Since the 1999 season, we've earned over $104,000 working games per season (including playoffs) as well as the occasional concert. The games we're scheduled for are listed below. Report time is usually 2.5 to 3 hours before the game starts, games usually last 3 hours or so, and then we have 45 minutes to an hour of clean-up before we're finished. So far, it looks like all training will take place at Miller Park, so no online training for returning workers this year. That's all we know right now. New workers will still have to attend a training session at Miller Park before they can work. Training usually lasts from 2 to 2.5 hours. There are sign-up sheets at both the Humboldt and St. Paul locations for those interested in working. You can also contact Mari directly, either in person or by phone ( ). Working at these games is a lot of fun, so we hope you will consider joining us this season! If you have any questions about working or training, please contact Mari. Also, if anyone has an official Sportservice Miller Park baseball cap that you're no longer using, we'd be happy to have it for one of our new workers. Each hat costs the club $10, so if you have one you'd like to give back, please contact Mari. Thank you! Motion to adjourn by Mari Pavleje, seconded by Kathy Gibowski. Meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Dona Barsul Secretary TRANSLATION PLEASE! Barking Dogs bark for many reasons, including alert (there's something out there!), alarm (there's something bad out there) boredom, demand, fear, suspicion, distress, and pleasure (play). The bark of a distressed dog, such as a dog who suffers from isolation or separation distress or anxiety, is high-pitched and repetitive; getting higher in pitch as the dog becomes more upset. Boredom barking tends to be more of a repetitive monotone. Alert bark is likely to be a sharp, staccato sound; alarm barking adds a note of intensity to the alert. Demand barks are sharp and persistent, and directed at the human who could/should ostensibly provide whatever the dog demands. At least, the dog thinks so. Suspicious barks are usually low in tone, and slow, while fearful barking is often low but faster. Play barking just sounds...playful. Baying- Baying is deep-throated, prolonged barking, most often heard when a dog is in pursuit of prey, but also sometimes offered by a dog who is challenging an intruder. The scent hounds are notorious for their melodic baying voices. Growling Growls are most often a warning that serious aggression may ensue if you persist in whatever you're doing, or whatever is going on around him. Rather than taking offense at your dog's growl, heed his warning, and figure out how to make him more comfortable with the situation. Dogs also growl in play. It's common for a dog to growl while playing tug - and that's perfectly appropriate as long as the rest of his body language says he's playing. If there's any doubt in your mind, take a break from play to let him calm down. Some dogs also growl in pleasure. Howling Howling is often triggered by a high-pitched sound; many dogs howl at the sound of fire and police sirens. Some dogs howl when they are significantly distressed - again, a common symptom of isolation and separation distress. Whimpering/Yelping A whimper or a yelp is often an indication that a dog is in pain. This may happen when dogs play, if one dog bites the other dog too hard. The whimper or yelp is used to communicate the dog's distress to another dog or human when they are friendly. The other dog or human is expected to react positively to the communication. Whimpers can also indicate strong excitement such as when an owner returns at the end of a long workday. Excitement whimpering is often accompanied by licking, jumping, and barking. Whimpering is softer and less intense than whining. The Good News If you think about it, given the stark differences in our communication styles, it's surprising that we get along with our dogs as well as we do! The good news is that both of our species are pretty darned adaptable. We can teach our dogs to appreciate some of our bizarre primate behaviors, and we can learn to use canine body talk to our advantage. When we put it all together, humans and dogs make pretty good teams!
