The challenging part of the walk was to keep the dogs focused while the group in front of us was throwing candy and the group behind us was blowing their horn, but we rose to the challenge and looked great. Mari also did a good job keeping us moving and giving the commands. Thank you all the club members and their furry champions that walked with me to represent our wonderful dog club. There are some upcoming Demo s in the month of January. If you are available to come and show off your skills with your dog, please consider signing up for a few of them. The sign-up sheets and information about each event is listed on the clipboards hanging at the Outdoor and the Indoor Clubhouses. The Milwaukee Brewers season is right around the corner, the club has signed another contract to work the 2017 season. Please watch for more information to follow if you would like to volunteer some of your time to help with this very successful fundraiser for the club. The Building Search Committee is continuing their search in locating a new building or buildable land for the club. If you are driving by a commercial building property or land in your area that you think has good potential, please write down the number and pass it on to any one of the Building Committee members, or a Club Chairperson. We are hoping to stay in Milwaukee County, but we are open to all suggestions. Mark your calendars, the club Holiday party is Saturday, January 21 st at the Pulaski Inn in Cudahy. Social hour starts at 5:00pm, Dinner at 6:00pm with presenting the awards and winning raffle numbers afterwards. 3 ANXIETY FREE PETS Separation anxiety, nail trims and vet visits are just a few of the items on a dog s most unwanted list. But more and more vets are working to help pet owners recognize and deal with canine fears. Here are some of their top tips: Out and about: It s not unusual for dogs to be afraid of riding in cars, especially if it usually ends with a visit to the vet. To help them, make short trips to nowhere to give the dog a taste of how uneventful a car ride can be. Reward them with a treat at the end of the successful car ride. It is not a good idea to have the dogs very first car ride be to a stressful vet or grooming appointment. Secure them in a carrier or with a doggie seatbelt. If he s not sliding around he ll feel more comfortable. Wearing a compression shirt may help to provide an added feeling of security. Avoid signs of motion sickness by making sure he s facing forward and that you have the window cracked a little bit. That alone can help to alleviate anxiety. Your vet can also prescribe medication to reduce the effects of motion sickness. When dogs feel less stressed, owners feel less stressed too. With a little patience and prep, your dog can experience new things without fear. Kim Campbell Thornton FUNDRAISERS Thank you to those who participated in the Colectivo Fund Raiser ~ MDTC earned $ from the sales of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. We also earned $59.00 from the Paw Prints we did at the Holiday Luncheon! Thanks to those of you who participated in this! Both of these will help us in our search for a new home! 4 MILWAUKEE DOG TRAINING CLUB General Membership Meeting Wednesday, December 28, 2016 The meeting was called to order at 8:02 p.m. by President Kathy Gibowski. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed. No correspondence. PRESIDENT S REPORT: Our holiday party is on Saturday January 21. Social hour starts at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $19 each. There are still calendars for sale. A nominating committee will be formed at the next board meeting. Officers positions and 2 board positions are up (Daryl & Terry). COMMITTEES DIRECTOR OF TRAINING: Fred said indoor training is going well. The classes on Thursday have been very small. A new obedience class starts Jan. 8. For Pet s Sake is having a TDI test on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 9 a.m. Call them if you are interested. : Class was cancelled last time due to snow. This weekend is for instructors only. AKC SHOW: Daryl said we could still use help, especially someone to send s for raffle items. SOCIAL: Next time will be a French toast bake. GOOD & WELFARE: Cards were sent to Tim Carter whose brother passed away, Nan Resch whose Mom passed away, and Mollie Sisson whose dog Zoomer passed away. Our condolences. Claire Reihl slipped on ice and broke her wrist. EXHIBITIONS: Mari said there is a daytime demo on Jan. 17 at a new place in Wauwatosa. They saw us in the holiday parade and requested a demo. Our club participated in the West Allis parade; it went well. Rick Sasek got the contract for the Sports show. Everything is the same. It will be the second weekend in March. The Pet Expo is on Feb. 4. FUND RAISERS: We are signed up for Miller Park. The Colectivo fund raiser made $643 profit per Daryl. $59 was made from the paw prints at the parade party. UNFINISHED BUSINESS The property search committee is looking at a few sites. BJ is checking on one that would require the building to be razed. Another is off highway 794. NEW BUSINESS Dale reported we have purchased two laptops and a printer to replace our older ones. These are newer used laptops. The new printer will be here and the older at the indoor site. Mari explained we did not have a quorum the last meeting, so the board voted to purchase these from Milwaukee PC. They are Dell Gen 2 & 3 and a Brother printer/scanner. The bill for all of this was $760. We thought the price would be over $1000. Time was of the essence, so the board voted to go ahead with the purchase. Now it is under $1000, so approval is not needed from membership. We could not pass on the deal. Our current ones are having issues. Milwaukee PC offers good customer support. Thank you to Dale for doing all this work. Calendars will be for sale at the indoor site. Any leftovers will be at the holiday party. Dale is doing a flyer with club info on it and where we will be. It will be 1/2 pg. in size. Willie Mabone asked about our land/building purchase criteria. We ideally would like 100x100 building. Or we could just buy land and build if reasonable. Price cap is $350,000. We discussed locales. He had seen one in Caledonia that has been bought, but will keep looking. Daryl said Mary Parker contacted a developer who is willing to meet with our club.
5 Show wins. Drawing for 6 month membership from holiday ticket purchases. Winner is Claude Szpot. Another drawing will be at the party. Motion to adjourn by Mari, seconded by Evan. Meeting adjourned at 8:37 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Dona Barsul Secretary WE ARE ON THE MOVE! The search continues for a new home, due to the not-so-distant, freeway expansion scheduled to level our St. Paul facility. In light of all the moving costs and remodeling expenses facing us, MDTC, is on the move to update its status to non-profit. We are searching for a nicely suitable training-home that will hopefully fulfill our obedience, agility and fly-ball training requirements plus allow us to serve the community by hosting AKC sanctioned events that generate income! A non-profit status will allow us to seek sponsors and partners that will help us move closer toward these goals. If you know how the process works in becoming a non-profit, and are moved to assist us update our status...please contact the Property Search Committee; Daryl Stuppan, Betty Jane Parrott, Marion Artner, Martha Ryan, Mary Parker. HELP WANTED! Our AKC show committee can use your help. No experience necessary! The more the merrier! The group helps to put on our club s annual AKC show and raffle. Volunteers contact possible donors for the raffle and help gather raffle items. We also need help from committee members on both show days in June. If you can help, please contact Dona Barsul at merlinelg@earthlink.net or Lory Valley at l.valley@sbcglobal.net
