The Family Fun Day is run in conjunction with the highly successful Queanbeyan Gift (foot race) and will be held on Saturday 24 November 2012 from 10 am. The Family Fun Day free event is open to the public and features a fantastic range of free activities suitable for the very young, teenagers, parents and grand parents. A wide range of community organisations join together to make this day a success, and the activities include, story telling, entertainment, arts and crafts, face painting, jumping castles and live music. The Club has been asked to provide dogs for several obedience demonstrations through the day. If you have a steady reliable dog, good with crowds of people and trustworthy with the animals in the Petting Farm, then please join us at Queanbeyan Park for an hour or two. Speak to a Committee member with your offer to attend and help out ***************************************************** Halloween is coming! Your dog is hiding!
13 Dogs who escape - how to keep them at home It is difficult to stereotype a chronic escapee of the dog world. Breed and gender are no real indicators, nor is age, as some pups start roaming almost as soon as they are weaned carrying on well into their teen years (if they survive the hazards for that long!). Despite having the best home that money can buy, dogs don t care for manicured gardens, expensive beds and toys and top quality brands of dog foods. The positives to a dog of getting out far outweigh these luxuries, especially if there is no company at home through long working days. Dogs can raid neighbourhood garbage bins and compost heaps, get as much exercise as they want, meet other roaming dogs as well as people with time for them. Some dogs travel to find company and even sex. All these incentives add up and reinforce to the dog the benefits of leaving home as often as they can negotiate the new barriers set up to contain them. This leads to escaping occurring often, and though it is a common problem, it can be solved if the owner is determined to contain the dog in the yard. There is no one solution, here are a number of options to try often in combination. build a dog yard using a chain link wire fence (1.8 m high) and include a ceiling or lid to prevent the dog climbing out run an electric wire along the top of the fence (kits are available from Rural Centres) fasten plastic pipes with a large diameter horizontally along the top of the fence - the dog cannot get a grip as the pipes revolve and tip him back into the yard. attach wire mesh to the top of the fence angle it inwards towards your yard. This method is used in animal parks to stop climbing animals from escaping. Some dogs go through the fence perhaps using small gaps or loose palings and working hard to enlarge the hole so that they can squeeze through. These dogs need to be kept confined in a safe location such as the laundry or a garage when no one is home. Though a fully enclosed dog yard needs to be constructed as a permanent solution. For dogs that dig under a fence, use a combination of concrete poured along the length and wire mesh stretched horizontally from the fence line for about half a metre - the dog digs down along the perimeter at the fence line and encounters a barrier he cannot get through. Owners need to understand and accept that a chronic escaper has a high need for exercise, company and stimulation to cope with an otherwise boring day alone. Training classes, dog sports and social outings will help provide for your dog s needs. Dogs which are physically tired from adequate exercise, and mentally stimulated will be more willing to stay in your yard. For dogs which spend long hours of daylight alone while you are away at work, consider organising a neighbour or friend to check in through the day, or even to take the dog for a walk. The are many pet minders or pet walking services which can be employed on a daily basis, or a few times a week. Getting another dog for company is only advisable if you have solved the escaping problem. Otherwise you may find that you will have 2 dogs who escape. Stopping escaping dogs can be done by providing a varied and interesting lifestyle and making your dog part of most family activities and outings.
