PRESIDENT S REPORT Well the winter session of 2010 has certainly arrived. I hope that despite these wet, cold, chilly and sometimes frosty mornings that both you and your dog are getting the most out of what the Club is able to provide. Although your weekly training sessions may be great in getting your dog to socialise with other dogs, please try to remember that it s your daily training sessions which teach your dog to respond to what you want it to do. This means that you have to make that commitment to go out each day and walk /train /play with your best friend if you want it to learn to be a little more responsive to your own needs and/or requirements. The next few months of this year are going to be a test of everyone s endurance and stamina in getting out of our nice warm bed on a cold Sunday morning. However, it s something that has to be done if you want to achieve your goal. Please remember, that training will normally only be cancelled if our training grounds are considered unsafe (ie. due to continuous rain etc). If a training session is to be cancelled, it will be notified on our Club s official website (shown below). During our break in training earlier this month, the Club took the opportunity to conduct its annual official ANKC Dog Obedience Trial. For the very first time, our trial was held in conjunction with an ANKC Gundog Working and Retrieving Test conducted by the ACT Gundog Society. I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making this an excellently conducted dual trialling event. Any community based social organisation such as ours can only exist with the help of its volunteers. As many of you are now aware, all our instructors and committee members give their time and expertise freely. The Club has been extremely fortunate in recruiting quite a few new instructors to our ranks from ordinary members of our club. This is primarily due to the untiring work done by our Secretary (Jacqui) and her team in obtaining and training new instructors every yea. We re also very fortunate that some highly qualified trainers from our sister clubs in the ACT are volunteering to take classes at our club because this enables our own instructors to have some free time to be able to take their dogs in class. Whilst talking about volunteers, I d like to thank a couple of members (Ann Tyllyer & Richard Herba) who have done a great deal of work over the last couple of months in upgrading the image of our Club s official webpage ( On a more personal note, my fifth year as your President is fast coming to an end and many of my initial objectives to be achieved have now been obtained. Some of these included things such as moving from Queanbeyan Showgrounds to our own grounds on the Hoover Reserve; changing training sessions from midweek evenings to weekend daytime; sealing the car park; eradicating noxious weeds from our grounds (wherever possible); obtaining more workable club facilities; upgrading the watering system; installing toilet facilities; and modifying our training syllabus - just to name a few. However, this does not mean that we can rest on our laurels because it would still be great to see the Club install electricity and lighting at our grounds; proceed with Phase II development; finish work initially commenced on the storage Shed; and continue to improve our training facilities and equipment. In conclusion, I consider our Club now has suitable admin facilities, training equipment and personal expertise to encompass all the various facets of dog training sports for people in and around Queanbeyan and surrounding district. I look forward to seeing you on the grounds. Terry Griffin President, QDDTC July 2010

SECRETARY S YAP As this will be my last Secretary s Yap, I would like to thank all Committee members and Instructors for their support and help during the last few years. Without your support I could not have done the job required of a Secretary. I would also like to thank all the members of the club especially those who over the years have volunteered to undertake the instructor s course and help the club by taking classes, which meant all instructors at some time could take a break and train their own dogs. Our trial, which was held on the 10 th July was a great success. The feedback from the judges and exhibitors was very positive with many vowing to return next year. Congratulations to Michael Ziebell, who stepped in at the last minute to run the trial as our trial manager, Chris Motbey was away overseas; thank you Michael a job well done. Congratulations to our members who participated and were successful in gaining a qualifying score, and for those who didn t quite make it, there is always next time. A full report on the trial can be found elsewhere in the Newshound. Elsewhere in the Newshound is the notification of the Annual General Meeting, which will be held on Thursday 26 th August starting at 6.30 pm. With this notification is a nomination form for the Committee, as there are a few Committee members who will not be renominating this year, it is important that members consider if they can help the club by helping on Committee. There is a meeting on the last Thursday of each month and every Committee member takes on a particular job i.e. looking after the grounds, running the trial, Newshound, website etc. There will always be someone to help and you will not be thrown in at the deep end. Please approach me if you can join us as your fresh ideas in the running of our Club are very welcome. As usual our assessment day happened without a hitch, thanks to the help of all the Committee and the excellent organisation of Michael Ziebell. Congratulations to all members who participated and were successfully promoted to the next class. If you didn t quite make the grade, probably another session in your present level will give both you and your dog more confidence to progress to the level of training that you would like to achieve. I would like to wish the Club and all its members the very best for the future, keep up the good work; the Club can only go forward from here. Both Terry and I will be around for support, in between being on the road in our caravan seeing far off corners of Australia. My thought for this Newshound: Dogs are our link to paradise. They don t know evil or JEALOUSY or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in EDEN, where doing nothing was not boring It was peace Jacqui Griffin

QUEA BEYA & DISTRICT DOG TRAI I G CLUB I C A KC ALL BREEDS OBEDIE CE TRIAL Saturday 10 July 2010 Entries Close June 13, 2008 The day was bright and sunny and though it was cold in the morning, there was no wind and best of all it did not rain. Obviously the cold did not deter many people as most exhibiters turned up. The usual airplane noise drowned out words from time to time, but we all coped. I wish to thank sincerely everyone who pitched in and helped either before or during the trial. Thanks to our judges, John Green, Leo Kuipers and Di Easter. Highest Scoring Club Member Ian Foster with Jessie the German Shorthaired Pointer Once again thank you to everyone who helped make the trial run smoothly and pleasantly. Michael Ziebell (Trial Manager)

Playing dogs Watching a group of dogs playing with each other is a delight for many people. Playing is viewed by many dog owners as a fun and easy way to exercise their dogs and is perceived as a vital form of socialisation. But is that really so? Dogs in a natural setting will play most frequently when they are puppies. The pups are testing and strengthening their social and combative skills in a harmless scenario. By the time young dogs get to 6-9 months their play is often interrupted by adult dogs and at around months, usually at the time of sexual maturity, adults will not tolerate behaviour that they would have only a while ago. By now, playing becomes restricted to specific occasions such as leaving for a walk, which dogs will view as setting out for the hunt, and a little more when returning to the home territory. Playing here has the distinct function of reinforcing each member s place and role in the pack and bonding them for the dangers that lie ahead, such as meeting a neighbouring pack, or hunting prey. On returning home it is a reassurance of each other s bonds and status on home ground. In fact, adult dogs in a natural setting do not play a lot because they do not generally have the time and energy to waste on such activities. There is the territory to be patrolled regularly and defended, food to be found, killed and brought home, mates and pups to be taken care of and protected from other dogs and predators. Allowing dogs to play extensively with other dogs, and without the owners regular intervention has a range of disadvantages for you as the owner. Firstly, play in all species is not only about mental and physical fitness but it is also competitive. We would, for example, not say that Rugby players are socialising when playing against each other; they are competing with each other. Dogs who play a lot with each other are having issues that need resolving. Playing is a friendly way of sorting these issues out. The owner, as the senior member of the pack should help sort these issues out rather than leaving it for the dogs to do on their own.

Secondly, dogs that are allowed to play with other dogs for long periods of time uninterrupted will view every dog they meet as a potential play-mate. Walking them in areas frequented by other dogs can become very unpleasant, as they feel the need to engage with every dog they meet. Excessive playing also can cause serious injuries to dogs. Breeds vary greatly in how they play. Terriers obviously love using their teeth and their natural tendency towards aggression lets some of these guys forget they were "only" playing. Breeds such as Labradors and Retrievers generally are less likely to bite, nevertheless can cause injuries by running into another dog at high speeds. There are also gender differences in how dogs play. Some neutered males for example, lacking the aggression of testosterone, may play until they are ready to collapse, rearing up, wrestling each other with their front legs, running into and shouldering each other out of the way. Female dogs, especially intact ones, frequently do not like playing with other dogs any more by the time they get to sexual maturity. They will snap or be grumpy when approached and are branded as "bitchy" or not social. However they are behaving perfectly normal for a female dog in their disinterest in play or choosing only a few dogs to interact with, as play is used by intact dogs for courtship. Desexed females, lacking the softening female hormones, may turn into "Xena Warrior Princesses" combining the female snappiness with masculine persistence. Thirdly, dogs that are allowed to play endlessly with another dog, such as a second dog at home, frequently form closer bonds with those dogs, often to the detriment of the owner/dog relationship. Finally, playing is a part of socialising, but not socialising on the whole. If dogs are not taught to be calm and relaxed in the presence of other dogs, they simply will never be calm in the presence of other dogs. Socialising means to expose your dog to a wide variety of situations, so that he is accepting of them and handles calmly and confidently in those scenarios. Your dog can and should play with other dogs, certainly, but play should be age appropriate, in short bursts, and always under your control. This way, your dog respects your influence at any time and values you as his companion rather than seeing you only as the means of getting down to the oval to play with other dogs. If you have questions concerning playing or any other dog problems, feel free to contact Heike Hahner on or hhahner@bigpond.com
