3 We have been given a $ Community Grant! Thanks to Club Secretary Kathy Griffiths who wrote and submitted an application for a grant offered by the Company she works for. NEC Australia is a leading technology company, delivering a complete portfolio of ICT solutions and services to large enterprise, small business and government customers. In presenting this grant to Kathy, the NEC Managing Director said: Our key objective is to recognise the voluntary involvement our staff make to not-for-profit organisations that are important to them and which are making an important contribution to the community. I was extremely pleased with the response to the launch of the program; we received quite a few applications and it was inspiring to read about all the great causes people are involved with. We were particularly touched by Kathy s involvement with the Queanbeyan & District Dog Training Club and the contribution she is personally making to the Club. NEC Australia will make a grant donation of $ 1000 to the Queanbeyan & District Dog Training Club to assist with replacing the stolen equipment and with finishing the roof. Proudly supported by EC ******************************************************** Download issues of The Newshound - our Club magazine - in full colour Changes to class times due to inclement weather? - check the Site before you leave home Please be snake aware while out on the grounds. 7 Keeping Confined Dogs Happy adapted from Julia Adams BVSc - Petalia Resident Vet Dogs left alone while the family is away working or at school for the day without stimulation, or opportunity to exercise, can get bored and desctructive. Signs of boredom Boredom can lead to behavioural problems such as separation anxiety as the dog dreads being left alone again. Dogs can become destructive as an attempt to amuse themselves. Dogs can start to bark incessantly, and can become aggressive. Repetitive behaviours such as tailchasing and constant pacing in a pattern may be seen. The 5 Point Program to avoid boredom in dogs Solving the boredom problem for dogs requires the 5 Point Program according to animal behavioural specialist, Dr Robert Holmes: Obedience work Play Free running exercise View of the world Allowed chewing objects Obedience work This quietens dogs down by giving them 'work therapy' or something to replace what they would get as working dogs. Secondly it brings dogs under better control. The commands can be used in other situations, such as telling the dog to 'drop' if it starts to be aggressive. Thirdly, it reinforces the handler's status as leader of the dog's pack. Even a few minutes of training helps the dog accept the handler's authority. You can train your dog yourself, or attend obedience classes. Free running Exercise outside the property Providing daily free-running exercise outside the property is highly stimulating for dogs and uses excess energy. This does not mean following owners who are running, cycling or driving. It means letting them race around, as they like, to play or follow their noses. Freerunning exercise can be used as a reward for doing obedience work, or other good behaviour. It suits many owners to walk to a park for training and then follow it with off lead exercise. Play There are many indestructible toys to keep dogs entertained when they are on their own; some of which you can hide food inside for a dog left alone to extract and eat. Regular play sessions with other dogs work well, or hit a ball with a tennis racquet, or toss a frisbee. View of the world Allowing dogs to watch the world go by helps desensitise them to the passing parade. Dogs that are let out to the front yard for short periods tend to bark, so by allowing them long periods of access to the street front they will settle down after their need for stimulation is satisfied. This will depend on the nature and the variation in what is passing by. Designated or permitted chewing items Direct a dog s natural chewing behaviour onto a large raw bone such as shins and shanks, or a rawhide bone or similar chewing toy. If your dog buries its bone, provide more so that there is not the need to store them for a day when they may be scarce.
