PRESIDENT S REPORT This issue features such a range of dog related activities that there is sure to be some activity within these pages that appeals to you and makes you want to find out more. We have articles which touch on obedience both informal and at competition level, flyball (and the Saturday morning activity held here Funball), agility, endurance, Rally O and Dancing With Dogs. Look for more information on the Club Web Site and by using Google. I want to make a point of thanking all those Committee members, family & friends and Club members who continue to give generously of their time and efforts to make these events happen, run successfully, and in some cases bring funds into our coffers. As we are a not for profit group, we rely on our efforts at fund raising, plus applying for a number of Community Grants offered by State or Federal Governments - and winning some of those. Our recent efforts resulted in the purchase of a laptop computer for the Secretary and Treasurer to store information on and also a generator used to run some basic kitchen appliances when we cooked lunch for the Judges and helpers at our recent Obedience Trial. Along those lines, I am reminding you that the Annual General Meeting is approaching. Read information elsewhere in this Newshound, but please keep Thursday 30 August free to attend. Bring your enthusiasm and new ideas to our Committee - you will be very welcome. I am available to listen to your comments and ideas - is best: puppy.rampage@gmail.com Keep on hugging and loving your dogs - they are the lucky ones - to have caring owners who bring them to Class on Sunday mornings! Marianne

Fun - Flyball It s great fun! Are you interested in Fly Ball or just having some fun with your dog? Fun-Flyball is an informal non-competitive social class available to all club members. Flyball is an adrenalin-pumped four-dog relay race, where each dog in turn must jump over four hurdles to retrieve a ball, returning back over the same hurdles before the next dog takes its turn. If your dog is ball crazy and/or full of energy then Fun-Flyball may just be the activity for both of you. Your dogs will be happier and worn out by session s end. As well as Flyball we do basic obedience, socialisation and dabble in agility using both tunnels and jumps. Club Instructors are on hand to teach and assist. Fun-Flyball is held on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 10:30 am at the Club grounds Come along and see what it's all about and have a go. If you're not a financial member of the Club, and you want to have a try, you will need to bring your dog s current vaccination certificate. Any dog regardless of its breed, size or shape can learn. So come and have a try, even if your dog prefers treats to balls. Anita or Kathy or secretary@queanbeyandogs.org.au Queanbeyan District Dog Training Club Fun for dogs (and owners)!!

It would be great if you feel you can join the group of people who run your Club. One two hour evening Committee meeting is held each month - on the last Thursday ~ start at 6.30 pm and finish early Please attend the AGM and volunteer for Committee Want more information?

Demonstration Fun Day On Sunday May 27 there was a Demonstration and Fun Day during classes to give you all a chance to see and participate in some of the different types of classes and cool activities offered to you and your dog. The activities included Rally-O, Dancing, Flyball, Agility and Open / Novice (Competition Level) Obedience. It was very pleasing to see the happy dogs trying out many new activities introduced as games and fun. We hope that some of you will continue to broaden your dog s horizons with continued training and possibly active trialling. There is a whole world of fun activities you can share with your dog - just choose your favourite and give it a try. Much more information is available from any Committee member - or try Google and You Tube

Special Achievements Some of our members are taking their dogs to official ANKC Obedience Trials. Ask them any questions about trialling - it can be a wonderful sport 24 February 2012 ACT Companion Dog Club Companion Dog (CD) Level Judge: Mr J Blight (NSW) 3 rd Place Anne & Ritchie Butler with Bonnie their Hungarian Vizsla Endurance Test held at EPIC on 1 July These dogs gaited 20 kilometres beside bicycles at a speed of 10 kms per hour, were worked through 2 short obedience tests, before and afterwards, to gauge their willingness to respond to their owners commands, and underwent 4 Vet checks to ensure they staed fit throughout. 13 "Food makes my dog over-excited." If food over-excites your dog, you need to use food as a reward to teach your dog to be calm. The Doggi-Calm training technique is quick and easy. Let your dog sniff a piece of food in your hand, ignore the dog's boisterous bouncing and barking, wait for your dog to sit and then offer the food. Repeat the procedure a number of times. Delay giving the food reward for a couple of seconds after your dog sits and your dog will remain calm for a couple of seconds. With each successive repetition, progressively increase the delay and hence the period of calmness. After hand feeding just a dozen pieces of food, you'll have a dog that calms down quickly and sits automatically whenever you have food in your hand. "My dog responds only when I have food." Most probably because you have yet to fully grasp the principles of lure/reward training. Read on to learn how to replace food lures with verbal commands and hand signals within your first training session, and learn how to phase out and replace food rewards with more meaningful incentives, such as life rewards and internal motivation. Phase Out The Use Of Training Tools As Soon As Possible Do not become dependent upon the training tools you use. Training tools are meant to temporarily help the training happen easier, not to permanently reduce reliability. Phase out the use of training lures and rewards as soon as possible, otherwise your dog will only respond when you have them. Once your dog is trained, he will gladly oblige your wishes and then your temporary training tools will no longer be necessary. Training lures become unnecessary as soon as your puppy learns the meaning of your verbal requests and hand signals. You should be able to phase out training lures completely during the very first session. Similarly, training rewards are no longer necessary once they have been replaced with more meaningful incentives life rewards, such as dinner time, couch time, tummy rubs, car rides, walks, playing tug, playing fetch, etc. You may begin to phase out training rewards during the first session, by asking your puppy to progressively perform more and more for a single piece of food. Use Training Tools That Your Dog Finds Pleasant and Enjoyable Training involves manipulating or modifying a dog's natural behaviours. The most common approaches include: 1. Increasing the frequency of desirable behaviours (using rewards), e.g., being calm; 2. Teaching a dog to perform desired behaviours reliably on cue (using lures and rewards), e.g., come, sit, down and stay; 3. Decreasing the frequency of undesirable behaviours (using instructive reprimands), e.g., jumping-up and pulling on-leash; 4. Teaching a dog to reliably not perform undesired behaviours on cue (using lures and instructive reprimands), e.g., Don t touch and Quiet. However, there is a great deal more to training than behaviour modification. During the training process, your dog forms many positive and negative associations about training and about the trainer. If you use pleasant training tools (lures and rewards), your dog will learn to love training and the trainer. However, if you use unpleasant training tools (restraint, physical coercion, and scary or painful punishments), your dog will learn to dislike training, and the trainer, i.e., you! Adapted from Dr. Dunbar s Good Little Dog Book, by Dr. Ian Dunbar
