14 Rally O training - Stanley learns to drop at Heel The perceived submission of the Drop position can sometimes cause problems with entire adult male dogs who have not been taught from a very early age. It was decided to train this position by capturing it and using a marker word or the click sound from a clicker every time Stanley dropped by himself. During the times Stanley was indoors with us, we surreptitiously kept an eye on him. Sooner or later he would settle on his bed or lie down on the carpet. As he committed to lying down, we clicked at the same time as saying Drop - the cue word we had decided on. A small treat was offered from a container kept close by for this purpose. The treat was always presented to Stanley on the floor between his front legs, encouraging him to lower his head to claim it and to remain dropped. Putting a hand gently but firmly on his shoulders kept him lying down as well. This picture, though taken during an actual Rally O trial, shows my hand moving downward. As Stanley is expecting me to have a treat he is not getting up from the drop, but is focused on my hand. I want to point out that during Rally O competitions no food or motivators are permitted in the ring. But Stanley had not read that part of the Rules, so went into the drop position on the first command in expectation of receiving his treat. Once he was comfortable in the drop, I gave verbal praise saying Good - Drop in a sing-song repetitive manner. This meant that he relaxed and remained lying down. From this start I was able to teach him to stay while I stepped in front of, and eventually walked around him. Adding the Stay command and testing that he understood it was easier than I had anticipated. I attributed this to the strong Stand Stay which he held in the show ring and which had be taught before he turned 3 months old. Over a few days of me asking for a Drop several times randomly, and insisting on him doing do at the first command, I asked for 2 or 3 repetitions before giving a treat. The concept of offering treats on a random pattern is very effective as the dog hastens to comply, not certain if this drop will bring a treat.

15 Rally O training - Stanley learns to sit at Heel Stanley is one of our pure bred Siberian Huskies who had been pretty much kept as a show dog despite having competed in Dancing With Dogs Freestyle competitions last year. However, early in 2014 at the age of 5 years we decided to train him to compete in Rally Obedience (Rally O) trials. Sitting at the Heel position when we stopped walking was a fundamental static move which appeared up to 9 times on a Rally O Novice course. For a show dog like Stanley, his ingrained behaviour on seeing me stopping was to swing around into a Stand Stack position facing me as he would do in a show ring situation. Initially I rewarded Stanley for any position he Sat in, provided that he did so on the first command. I would stop walking, say Sit (once) and then wait motionless while he shuffled around to look at me before Sitting. We ended up with him in the position pictured for the first 1 or 2 times at the beginning of each training session. I rewarded the Sit twice even if in an incorrect position, because I wanted him to get in the habit of Sitting when I stopped. Then came many patient sessions of teaching Stanley that there was only one correct place for him to Sit. Which was beside me on my left hand side, facing the same direction that I was. My training tool was a large plastic cone, strategically placed close to my side - see the picture. As I stopped and Stanley moved in front of me, I lured him (initially) to keep walking, turning to his left and circling the orange cone. Using an obvious obstacle like this made it easy for him to walk around it.

16 Being careful not to tighten the leash, I lured using food in my left hand and the leash in my right hand. Stanley circled the cone and as he walked forward to be beside me I asked him to Sit By moving my left leg backwards and then forwards as the dog walked around the cone, Stanley was guided as he followed the direction of my body around the cone. Saying Sit while he was still walking and raising my hand upwards to encourage his head to come up meant he was more likely to lower his hindquarters towards the ground and settle into a Sit. Because he was watching my hand and focussed on the word Sit it was easy to reward him immediately with a treat. I repeated this positioning up to 6 times in one session, and when he did one Sit in a close to perfect position, I broke off the session, played tug games and released him on a high note. I did up to 5 sessions a day, each taking a maximum of 3 minutes. It was not difficult to find such small blocks of time. If training inside the house, I stood up and worked my dog during advertising breaks in evening television programs. After 14 days of very short sessions to teach the Sit with a cone, I felt confident enough to try without it. The results astonished me, as he stopped and Sat in a perfect, close Heel position on a single command - the very first time. The correct Sit position had become a habit and my patient and calm repetition had shown Stanley that he wold be instantly rewarded on every correct performance. Over the next seven days, I faded out the frequency of food rewards, and not every Sit was rewarded. It was important to randomise food rewards because in the actual competition Stanley could be asked to do up to 10 Sits before getting a treat - which he would only get when out of the ring after his turn was over. I also kept treats in a container away from where we practised so that he learned we would have a fun game of running to the treats after a random number of correct Sits had been done.

17 Step 1 A k9 Behaviour Specialist Bullet Proof Recall Withhold food for 1 day for enthusiastic eaters of for 2 days for picky eaters. Start step 2 on day three for picky eaters, day two for enthusiastic eaters. Step 2 Remove the dogs bowl from the floor and put it in an elevated position where the dog cannot see it. Use only 2/3 of the dog s normal daily ration for the days training. Place a handful of the dogs usual dry food in your pocket and walk through and around the house and the moment the dog is not near you (even if you have to get someone to hold the dog while you walk away) then give the dogs name and your recall command. The moment the dog comes to you immediately give it a single pebble and lots of praise. Walk away and repeat many, many, times. Alter the distance and the locations, from short recalls to start with. Then move on to longer and more complicated ones. Start in the house, then progress to the back yard and address the main situation you have where you have problems. Do recalls when you are in the house and the dog is out in the yard. As reliability becomes obvious, then you start doing them in places like the off leash dog park etc. Step 3 Same as above but this time when the dog comes to you, tell it to sit, give the food and then give lavish praise. Step 4 Same as above but now you tell the dog to sit, then lavish praise and then the food treat. By the third day, your dog will have a bulletproof recall. Occasionally call the dog to you just to give it a treat (after a sit and praise of course). A varying schedule of reinforcement can create a more fanatical response than a fixed schedule of treating every time. NOTE: After 1-2 days of no food and then working with 2/3 daily rations the dog must not be worked for more than three consecutive days before it is returned to its normal feeding routine Written by Grant Teeboon - Grant has his owns Brisbane based company The Paw Man and has been a Police Dog Handler with the RAAF for the last 32 years ( Extra information Don't repeatedly call him and give him a single piece of kibble until you are out of kibble. You call him once; give him a single piece of kibble and that is the end of the training. In 5 minutes, or 15 minutes or 30 minutes you then repeat the process. Do this over the course of the ~16-18hours you are up during the day. Recall games you can also include: Call your dog and start running away. This helps to motivate your dog via pack and prey drive Restrained recall. Get someone else to hold the dog, then jump around, call them, wave their favourite toy at them and generally make yourself look really exciting. Once the dog is pulling to get to you, then can be let go, and will generally fly to you like a bullet.
