The following talented and caring individuals are interested in and committed to ushering the organization into its next phase. All members of the Whitman County Humane Society are entitled to vote on board candidates. The election is held by exception : candidates will be elected unless a significant concern is voiced AGAINST a particular candidate. WCHS welcomes any and all feedback. Please send your comments by to webmaster@whitmanpets.org or by postal mail to PO Box 453, Pullman, WA before August 15. Terms begin in August! Josh Larson is from Drury, Idaho and originally grew up near Endicott, Washington. He has run an equine training program for the past 9+ years and has 14+ years of administrative and marketing experience. He currently works at the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and is experienced in event planning and fundraising. While in college, he volunteered for the Blue Mountain Humane Society; this experience influenced and shaped his care and concern for animals today. Josh hopes WCHS can partner with more local businesses for seminars on education and adoption. Jan Luft (re-election) has served on the WCHS Board for the past three years and is currently the Secretary/Treasurer. She has worked for the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine for 20+ years and has extensive experience with domestic and wild animals. If you have been to a WCHS outreach event, you have probably seen Jan! She has been a go-to representative for WCHS at a variety of locations including Dissmore s IGA pet food and adoption drives, the Lentil Festival Beer Garden, the Lentil Festival parade, the Palouse Empire Fair, and WSU football parking. She has also served on a variety of WCHS committees including dog park, fundraising, Fur Ball, and Mutt Strutt. Kimberly McGee is a nurse at Pullman Regional Hospital and adopted Fluffy, one of WCHS Hope Fund recipients. She is interested in community education, particularly promoting spay/neuter and decreasing the number of abandoned pets. She has significant volunteer experience at both PRH and Emmanuel Baptist Church. Kimberly hopes to make a tangible difference in the lives of the pets served by WCHS and members of the community as whole. Kelly McGovern (re-election) works at WSU and has served on the WCHS Board for the past three years. She was the Secretary for the Board in She became the Pooch Park at Pullman co-chair in fall 2012 and has been instrumental in readying the park for its Grand Opening this past May. She has also served on the WCHS Communications Committee for the past three years and has been the driving force behind the quarterly WCHS newsletter. Kelly is co-chairing the 2013 Mutt Strutt Committee. She brings strong organizational skills, her background in design, and her experience in managing financial information for the Moscow Moose Lodge to WCHS. Erin McIlraith has been the Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the WSU Center for Civic Engagement since She is responsible for much of the CCE s publicity including its website, event planning and photography, press releases, and social media. Erin has significant volunteer experience with a number of local organizations. She is passionate about animal care and welfare as well as WCHS no-kill philosophy, and she hopes to be involved in community education and fundraising efforts. Amy Williams (re-election) is completing her second year as President of the Board of Directors. She has co-chaired our major fundraising committees, the Fur Ball (2011) and Mutt Strutt (2012) Committees, and she has been a member of each committee through her entire term on the Board. Her efforts have been critical in securing donations and vendors for events, particularly beyond Pullman and into Whitman County. She believes that fundraising and grant writing are critical for WCHS future success. Amy is cochair of the 2013 Mutt Strutt Committee.

6 Saving One Pet at a Time: Donations Needed! Page 6 In late June, WCHS was contacted by the Whitman County Sheriff s office for assistance with a rural residence which had too many pets. WCHS began to gather resources for the case, which we learned involved many dachshunds, Chihuahuas, and other small dogs; several large dogs; cats; guinea pigs; and bearded dragons. WCHS staff and volunteers collected and assembled crates and carriers for animal housing and purchased hundreds of pounds of dog food, vaccines, flea/tick insecticides, and disposable dog dishes. To assist the family in distress, on Thursday, July 4, WCHS staff and volunteers drove two trailers and the WCHS minivan to the residence, where we took custody of 90 animals: 41 dogs, 21 cats, 15 guinea pigs, 12 bearded dragons, and one rabbit. Conditions at the house were poor, and the cats and dogs were flea-ridden. After the animals were brought back to Pullman, staff, volunteers, and volunteer veterinarians performed vet checks and bathed and vaccinated all the animals appropriately. The dogs were boarded outdoors beneath a 20 x 20 foot tent, while the cats were boarded within the WCHS cat building, isolated from the cats already awaiting adoption. The rabbit also resided at the shelter, while the bearded dragons and guinea pigs entered temporary foster care. Fortunately, all of the pets were relatively well-socialized. Volunteers and staff worked hours days daily to prepare the shelter for the animals and then to care for them (on top of the adoptable pets) during their stay in Pullman. Thanks to assistance from Dachshund Rescue NW and Seattle Humane Society, all but one dog (euthanized due to severe internal bleeding), two guinea pigs (one pregnant, one adopted), and the bearded dragons (awaiting local placement) were transferred out of Whitman County by July 7 to find new homes. This assistance effort cost WCHS thousands of dollars. WCHS does NOT receive any direct funding from Whit- man County. The support and generosity of the com- munity is what enabled WCHS to initiate this effort to assist these pets in finding new, forever homes. WCHS welcomes any and all contributions to cover the costs of this incident as well as the continued costs of care for the bearded dragons prior to adoption. You may mail in your donation to WCHS at PO Box 453, Pullman, WA or use a credit card through Paypal at Thank You! WCHS would like to thank the following businesses, organizations, and individuals for their assistance and hard work during the Independence Day Holiday: Staff Brittany Bryant (Director of Shelter Operations) Kylene Daschofsky (Animal Care Attendant/ Adoption Counselor) Mango De Silva (Animal Care Attendant/ Adoption Counselor) Victoria Morrow (Animal Care Attendant/ Adoption Counselor) Volunteers: Anonymous volunteer veterinarians and veterinary technicians Angie Funaiole Tom Harris Elricco Jones Jan Luft Jerica Marterella Kelly McGovern Philip Mixter Dan Port Linda Rogers Ashley Rollofson Gene Siple Paula Siple Susan Wang Lauren Young Other assistance Marti Fulfs Dachshund Rescue NW/Dachshund Club of Spokane Petco (Lewiston) Pullman Chamber of Commerce Pullman Parks and Recreation Seattle Humane/The Humane Society for Seattle/King County (Bellevue) Sun Rental (Pullman)
