1 PAUSE FOR PAWS Winter 2013 Volume 6 Issue 1 A lot of dogs have bigger problems than just waiting for Santa to come. Many are homeless or without food or shelter. That s where we come in. We try to give hope to the animals who need it. We can t do it without your help. APSRC s sponsorship program enables animals to be adopted from the animal shelter or placed with rescue groups. We participate in adoption events at Petsen$e and Petco. We help current pet owners keep their pets when they fall on hard times. When possible we even assist with vet bills. Help us help them. Use the form at the back of this newsletter to donate.

APSRC Accomplishments in 2013 Thanks to the help of generous and compassionate donors and volunteers, APSRC has made a difference to Rockingham County s companion animals this year. Through the middle of November, APSRC has accomplished the following: Served as a member of the Advisory Board for the new Rockingham County Animal Shelter Reached out to our community - by attending expos, festivals and events all over the county Helped families in need by providing: o Food and litter to 35 families and a total of 198 pets o 8 bags of cedar shavings given o Provided 7 dog houses to dogs with no shelter o Medical assistance provided for 20 animals, some with life threatening illnesses. Boarding and vaccinations were provided for 2 animals whose owner was hospitalized Worked adoption fairs to place shelter animals in loving homes Assisted a feral cat colony by providing spay/neuter assistance and food Sponsored 331 dogs and cats to rescue groups or permanent homes o Most of these animals were sponsored by the Drive 4 Shelter project which began when the Rockingham County Animal Shelter was in the planning stages. After great success with raising funds for the shelter s future spay/neuter clinic, Drive 4 Shelter has continued to raise money and work diligently to place homeless dogs and cats in permanent homes. How you can help Give a birthday or holiday gift in someone's honor. Tell us what the special occasion is and we ll send them a card! Give a gift of endowment to ensure your gift keeps giving. Include APS in your estate plans, in your will or as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan.

3 APSRC Wish List CASH DONATIONS to continue to assist pets in need! The prolonged economic downturn has been brutal on Rockingham County pets. Demand for assistance is up and donations are down. Dog houses, fencing and kennels to help improve the lives of dogs Volunteers to assist with food deliveries Volunteers to assist with adoption fairs Pet food donations. We are particularly in need of cat food now. Grant writers and fundraising coordinators Please call us at or us at if you can help us. All donations are tax deductible. ************** Please open your heart and checkbook to help us help the animals! ************* A Shelter Dog's Poem Author Unknown Once upon a time, you see, there was this little pup; for reasons unbeknownst to me, his family gave him up Maybe it was chewing everything that he could find, maybe they were busy and just didn't have the time They took him to the shelter and they just left him there Outside, alone, in the cage...shivering and scared Even though they knew inside, if he went through those doors, he may never have the chance to find a home like yours He sat there crying silently wondering what he did that was so bad that they just had to leave him as they did However fate was smiling on that little pup that day, because a lady saw him and she whisked him right away He got a second chance at life that others may have not and now he's in a loving home with everything he wants Everyday he gets that love that he was looking for And silently is thankful for when she walked through that door Others may not have this chance so open up your heart and adopt a shelter dog to take and give him/her a brand new start
