Join renowned cat behaviorist Pam Johnson- Bennett and learn what can be done to help these animals so that they can find their furever homes. Regulations and More Regulations! James Averill, D.V.M., Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development This session will explain how the various Michigan regulations currently in force apply to the animal welfare community. It will include a review of controlled substances, sheltering regulations, holding times, standards for sheltering, shelter inspections and much more! Best Practices for Evaluating Basic Equine Health and Body Condition Karen L. Waite, M.S., Equine Extension Specialist, MSU This presentation will focus on the assessment of equine health care and management practices in accordance with the Michigan Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices for the Care of Farm Animals (GAAMPS). This session is part one of the MPAW Horse Cruelty Investigation training track. Improving Animal Health Through Proper Disinfection Kate Hurley, D.V.M., M.P.V.M., UC-Davis First, there was bleach. Now there are a wide variety of products available from which to choose. But what s best? What are we missing? How do you do it? Join us for an update on improving animal health through effective and appropriate disinfection and sanitation. SESSION THREE: 1:30-3 p.m. Being the Eyes and Ears for Animal Cruelty in Your Community Deborah MacDonald, Michigan Humane Society Designed for staff and volunteers of animal shelters, animal rescue groups, and interested community members who are NOT law enforcement, this presentation will cover three critical areas: animal cruelty as defined by Michigan law; collecting evidence of animal cruelty; and connecting with law enforcement to achieve positive outcomes for animals. Six Steps to Creating a Written Fundraising Plan Sandy Rees, CFRE, GetFullyFunded.com Many nonprofits struggle to create a fundraising plan and put it in writing, yet the benefits are tremendous. A written plan shifts you from being reactive and dealing with the crisis of the day to being proactive and working purposefully toward the results you want. In this session, you ll learn how to follow 6 simple steps to put together a written plan for raising the money you need in the coming year. We ll cover goal setting (using SMART goals), action plans, and ways to keep your plan on track, plus you ll get some worksheets and checklists that will make the process easy. Handling: Making it Safe for You and the Horse Tom Guthrie, Statewide Extension Education (Equine, MSU) By having a basic understanding of equine behavior, you can learn to anticipate and safely react to the horse s natural instincts. This presentation will discuss tips to keep you and the horse safe when handling horses in various investigative situations. This session is part two of the MPAW Horse Cruelty Investigation training track. Rabies: All You Need to Know Kimberly Signs, D.V.M., Michigan Department of Public Health This session focuses on the public health aspect of rabies as well as the protocols and procedures to follow in the event of a bite case for both animals and humans. Further, it will review proper reporting and provide an overall status of rabies in Michigan.

4 SESSION FOUR: 3:30-5 p.m. Temperament Tests Exposed The Truth behind the Technique CJ Bentley, Michigan Humane Society You ve seen the YouTube clips of fake hands poking dogs while they eat. You ve heard rumors about using plastic dolls and people dressed in funny costumes. Come see the right (and wrong!) ways to conduct a basic temperament test. Video clips and discussion will be the cornerstones of this session which is designed to focus on proper technique and why it is so important. From Awkward to Awesome: The Beginner s Guide to Building Donor Relationships Sandy Rees, CFRE, GetFullyFunded.com If you know you need to be cultivating individual donors, but you d rather do ANYTHING else, this session is for you! You ll learn why you may feel uncomfortable at the thought of donor relationships and how to overcome it. You ll learn a simple method for building relationships on purpose, using a variety of strategies. You ll leave this session feeling much more confident about making friends for your nonprofit! Working with Your Local Prosecutor; Horses as Evidence; Handling the Media Terry MacKillop, Roscommon Animal Control & President, MAACO, and Deborah MacDonald, Michigan Humane Society Equine investigations can be difficult at best. During this presentation, we will discuss handling horses as evidence, and the methods available for proper documentation of their condition and progress. We will also discuss tips for working with your local prosecutor as well as working with the media to obtain a positive outcome for your organization. This session is part three of the MPAW Horse Cruelty Investigation training track.
