1 2017 Cowlitz County Fair 4H Animal Division 4-H DIVISION A ANIMAL JUDGING CONTESTS 4-H judging contest involve comparing four animals or objects per class with the possibility of three or more classes to judge. 4-H members who know what factors make up an ideal animal are more able to recognize top quality products, to know good standards, and to make wise decisions based on facts. Please check with the respective animal division superintendent in goats, dogs, and rabbits/cavies to see if a judging contest is being offered. A. Participants may be required to do oral and/or written reasons for their placement. B. Four animals/objects will constitute a class. C. The Hormel system of scoring will be used. D. Animal judging contests will only be held if there is interest, leadership, and availability of animals Lots 1-3 Blue 30, Red 15, White Juniors 2. Intermediate 3. 2 4-H DIVISION B HERDSMANSHIP CLASS 1: ANIMAL HERDSMANSHIP A separate 4H Youth Entry is NOT NEEDED for this division. Please put this division, class and lot on the respective animal entry form for the specific specie. 1. The purpose and guiding principles of herdsmanship are for exhibitors in the 4-H program to care for their animals, pens, and equipment properly, insure safety and keep stalls, pens, cages, surrounding areas and animals clean and attractive at all times. Educational displays and public relations are an important component of herdsmanship. 2. It is the primary responsibility of 4-H exhibitor to do herdsmanship. Non 4-H exhibitors or adults are to assist only prior to 10 a.m. if necessary. Failure of 4-H exhibitor to do herdsmanship can result in forfeit of all awards and premiums, and removal from further participation in the respective 4-H Animal Division for the duration of the Fair. 3. Herdsmanship must be performed each day of the Fair. An adult must be available in each area during the hours Fair is open to the public. (See respective animal divisions for additional details about herdsmanship times, feeding times, etc.) 4. 4-H herdsmen and supervising adults on duty must be identified in an obvious fashion. Exhibitors should be dressed in clean, neat attire and represent 4-H in a positive way. They must also wear appropriate footwear to the animal division. Be friendly and show courtesy to the public. 5. All animal superintendents should notify their respective 4-H exhibitors of specific barn rules and schedules. 6. While on duty, exhibitors will keep floors and aisle ways neat and clean, tack and feed areas neat and clean, and all animals and bedding clean and neat. 7. Wheelbarrows should be emptied regularly and kept out of aisle ways, tack and storage areas where applicable. Fair management provides manure dumpsters. 4-H members are expected to dump manure IN dumpsters not outside of dumpsters. 8. Exhibitors using the wash areas need to keep them clean and orderly, clear of manure and other debris. The wash racks are for livestock exhibitors. They are not for use by horse exhibitors. Fair management will determine wash area use. 9. Herdsmanship judges will examine the displays at least once a day, and will judge anytime during the times outlined in the respective animal divisions. 10. Herdsmanship is judged by clubs for horse, dairy, beef, sheep, swine, and goats H members will receive one ribbon and respective premium points for the duration of the fair (i.e. they will not receive premiums or ribbons for each day of fair). A. 4-H stall cards or 4-H cage cards will be furnished for each animal and must be displayed. 2
3 B. Each club must have its 4-H club name clearly displayed in such a manner that the public knows it is a 4-H club exhibit. C. Greens, flowers, or crepe paper may be used, however, they must be fireproof. D. Tack areas should be in good condition, clean and neat. E. Ribbons earned during the current fair only may be displayed. F. No ribbons from other fairs, shows, or events may be displayed. 12. Awards are made to clubs based upon the following scorecard. Refer to specific animal divisions for additional information if applicable. If specific animal divisions have additional expectations or requirements, it will supersede herdsmanship outlined in this section of the Premium Book, as long as 4-H exhibitors are aware of these additional requirements. Animals 25% Cleaned, groomed, water, feed and bedding appropriate to animal. Stalls, Pens, Cages and Grooming Areas 20% Clean and orderly; aisles, barn area and tack area clean and organized. Educational and Display Effects 15% Animal and exhibitor identified, stall cards and club name displayed. Display has educational value that provides information to the public. Exhibitors 25% Appearance, positive attitude, courtesy and skill. Herdsman identified as a 4-H er and available to meet the public and oversee the animals. Proper attire including boots or sturdy shoes when on herdsmanship duty. Herdsman to keep aisle way, pens, animals, etc. clean while on duty. Safety 15% Beef and Dairy double tied. All equipment stored safely and used in a safe manner. Animals should be handled or worked around in a safe manner. Needed Phone: The 4-H Round Robin Showmanship activity will be the last day of Fair at 5 pm. Youth earn the right to participate in this event by winning their respective species age division showman-ship contests in Dairy, Beef, Sheep, Dairy Goats, Pygmy Goats and Swine. Please meet at the Sheep barn for orientation. 4-H members please contact Superintendent if you would be interested in being an animal holder for this event. 4-H members do not need to complete an entry form for this activity. 4-H DIVISION C 4-H DAIRY CATTLE Superintendent: Pam Watson pswatson@hotmail.com Dairy certificates for Cowlitz County 4-H members only must be on file in the Extension office by April 1 st that corresponds to the exhibit animals. Open to 4-H out of county exhibitors. However, check with 4-H Dairy Superintendent if a 4-H Dairy Certificate is required. For out of county 4-H exhibitors, Cowlitz County 4-H youth entry forms are due no later than July 1 st to the Cowlitz County Extension office or can be ed to 4-H dairy superintendent no later than July 1 or to the county 4-H educator at jleach@wsu.edu 4

All Dairy Goats must be dehorned. 3. Read all the 4-H General Rules in the Fair Book. 4. All Classes DOES ONLY unless wethers are specified. 5. Show order will be the same as animal lot number listed in the Fair Book. 6. If space is limited, number of animal entries may be limited to two per lot. 7. See Division B for herdsmanship information. All exhibitors must do equal herdsmanship. Failure to do so may result in withholding ribbons and/or premiums and/or State Fair qualification. 8. Each club must decorate their exhibit area that identifies their club and is presentable to the public. Each club and exhibitor is responsible for removing their decorations etc. at the end of fair. 9. If exhibitor is responsible for bringing their own equipment such as wheel barrows, pitchforks, broom, etc. 10. Cloverbud members, K-2 nd grade who exhibit their animals (pygmy goats) in the barns and who participate in fitting and showing and herdsmanship will do so on a non-competitive basis only. Animals exhibited by 4-H Cloverbud members are to be awarded rainbow ribbons. They may enter under the Class and Lot specific to the animal being entered but the entry must clearly designate the exhibitor is a Cloverbud.They will receive 12 premium points. Wash racks must be kept clean. All items left on the wash rack will be picked up and kept by the superintendents until asked for. Wash rack, clipping and exercise times will be posted in the 4-H Beef Barn. 2. Calves must be at least three months of age at time of showing in order to be shown in a lot by themselves. 3. No beef animals will be permitted outside of their assigned stall areas unless during respective exercise and/or show times or by permission of the 4-H beef superintendent. 4. Method of watering beef animals will be determined by the 4-H beef superintendent to maintain a safe environment for the public during the time that the fair is open. 5. Any 4H or FFA member, parent, or leader moving or changing stalls without the permission of the 4H beef superintendent or the respective FFA advisor, may be forfeit their opportunity to exhibit 7. CLASS 16: LAD AND LASSIE LEAD The purpose of the contest is to present sheep in the most attractive manner, to give spectators an opportunity to see beauty and to improve the image of the sheep and wool products. 1. Entrants in this class must be a sheep exhibitor or a clothing exhibitor sponsored by a sheep exhibitor and be of the appropriate age as shown by classes below. They will wear a casual, everyday garment (not a costume) made of wool or wool blend not less that 70% wool. The whole outfit doesn t have to be wool, but at least one piece must be wool (like a wool skirt with a blouse or wool vest with jeans). 2. Sheep may be either ewes or weathers, conditioned, fitted and trained to show on a halter. 3. With each entry there shall be a description of the garment to be worn, background of the contestant and breed of the sheep, which will be read during the promenade in the ring. It should be approximately 20
21 150 words long and must be submitted by 8:00 pm on opening day of the fair (See Superintendent for forms). 4.
