3 Annua Show Dear Members and Friends, This year it is my intention to get as many of our members invoved in our Annua Show as possibe. I aways think that ots of peope are wiing to hep but encouragement and time taken to outine jobs that are required has not been our strong point. As the Show format has changed peope who show fish are not avaiabe on the day except to take down the Show in the evening. So I need assistance from those that wi not be showing or maybe ony have 1-2 fish in. Jobs sti to be fied are:- Tea prep for judge s party aready taken care of by Raph and the Bunbury adies. on yer Raph! Signage, making, posting and taking down..not a huge job! Runners to assist the stewards (2 off) Security man.john Green pencied in! Posting resuts as they come to hand (2 peope)..need to be computer iterate. Heping peope to bench their fish if they need assistance (2 peope) not a big job 2 hours in the morning A traffic warden to take charge in the morning at the fish unoading bay and direct traffic. Needs to be oud, aggressive, thick skinned and wiing to be run over at east once! + sense of humor, ease of defusing fish rage! Liaising officer for the sta peope to hep them get set up in the right pace, answer any questions, sort any issues. Writing the Show Report for the ZNA. One day happy and the next not so happy. It is certainy an ever changing thing, one minute happy itte fry few weeks ater sti itte fry, nothing is growing, owner gives up and chucks them out in a big pond et them fend for themseves, remember I am not a patient person! Thought I woud try with another spawning, have ots of itte ones again so hopefuy these ones wi grow better. At east I don t have to separate these ones! Genera discussion:probems with the pond To cean up dirty bore water try to add Bentonite a focking agent. Banket weed can be destroyed with sat. Sprinke on weed directy up to 3 kg/1000t. Ces had no success at breeding so far. The femae might not be ready yet. Rod Strang mentioned Geo Liquid to get rid of the ammonia after spawning. A protein skimmer might hep as we Aan had an eary spawning with a 540 mm Showa but ended up with sma eggs and ony about 10% back babies. The first spawning of a Koi is normay not very good. Dave Gibsons had a second spawning. Eggs are bigger now as the temperature is higher now. Ray asked how frequent you coud use a mae for spawning. Every 2 to 4 weeks.

5 Sti ooking for magic cure for fungus on eggs. Maachite green is no good. Renders eggs infertie. Methyene bue is a better choice. Infertie eggs seem to be more prone to attract fungus. Hatchings grow a ot faster when fed on evaporated mik and egg yok. Live daphnia is very good ater on and it can be bred in dirty water. Brewers yeast wi feed fry and daphnia. Ces had some magazines and ZNA magazines for sae. New Product. Ces come across a foating skimmer. He wi put an artice into the newsetter. 7 and ook down on them. Aan conducted tours of his koi breeding set up for a who were interested and was very forthcoming in his ideas and handy hints. It was a very interesting tour and I am sure a who went earnt something or came away with a few ideas for their own paces. The dispay window in the pond was very popuar with the peope and the fish, both sides were ooking at each other with keen interest. I am not sure what the fish were thinking but the peope were impressed. After we had a had a good ook around and decided where to sit we were treated to a nice barbecue unch and a few drinks. To a that attended the pond tour thank-you for supporting your cub and I am sure you thought it was very worthwhie even if it was just to catch up with other members and have a good chat. To a of you that coudn't make it, for whatever reason, I hope you get a chance to attend one as they are reay quite an enjoyabe day. My daughter, Jade, got very excited at Aan s pace and took about 150 photos of the fish through the window. Thank goodness for digita cameras and the deete button. The photos don t reay do either pace justice but I wi put them in for you to see. Don t worry not a of them! Nishikigoi are most often referred to as koi by those who speak Engish. That s probaby due to the fact that koi is easier to say. Regardess of what we ca them, they are basicay carp that have been bred for coor though most koikeepers wi refer to them as more of an obsession! It s hard to resist buying just one for the pond and it s tough to decide which one to buy. They come in so many different coors and styes. It s amost ike picking out a car or a new sofa! The Origin of Nishikigoi No one, it seems, can agree on the exact origin of these festive-coored carp. Perhaps no one truy knows. It is known that nishikigoi have been around for thousands of years. They definitey have Asian ancestry probaby bred in China first, possiby more for a food source, then the art was mastered much ater in Japan. The carp was used as a subject in many Ancient Asian scuptures and drawings. Asians beieve these beautifu fish bring good uck and prosperity especiay when presented as a pair. The true art of breeding beautifu nishikigoi began during the eary 1800 s when Japanese breeders found a redcheeked koi in with a the traditiona back ones. As the century went on they perfected the Kohaku variety then went on to deveop the Sanke and Showa simiar to the ones we know today. More varieties were deveoped by the Japanese during the first haf of the 20th century. Surprisingy the Germans had a hand in the deveopment of a few varieties as we. The Doitsu (eather skinned or scae-ess) koi is one of their most famous contributions..

8 The Japanese continue to hod the honors of having the richest history in the deveopment of koi though it is ony a itte more than a few centuries since the Japanese first began vigorous breeding efforts During the ast haf of the century we ve seen great improvements in the quaity of koi bred in Israe and the United States, the US being responsibe for perfecting the Butterfy Koi. The United Kingdom, though never a big breeder of koi, have been big koi-keepers since the eary 1970 s. In the US koi-keeping fever spread from Hawaii (being nearest to Japan) to the West Coast (mainy Caifornia) to the East Coast and most recenty is becoming very popuar here in Georgia. What s In a Name? The Japanese term nishikigoi transates to brocaded carp. Most often the name of a certain variety of nishikigoi is a Japanese term that iteray transates into the coor and/or pattern and scaes of the fish. Sometimes it incudes the era of Japanese history when the variety was initiay introduced. For exampe, a white koi with red and back markings is referred to as a Sanke or Sanshoku which iteray transates into tri-coored. The type of Sanke introduced at the Tokyo Exhibition of 1914 is referred to as a Taisho Sanke because 1914 fe during the Taisho period of Japanese history. Genera cub business wi be discussed. POND TOUR Once again the KSWA has run a very successfu pond tour. We woud ike to thank Tim & Tina Pham and Aan and Juie Bennett for very kindy etting us come to their homes to ook at their ponds and for their great hospitaity. The tour started at the Pham s pace and we were greeted with smiing faces and a surprise back garden fu of fish and ovey pants. Tim has buit a arge pond in the back of his pace and was busy breeding and hatching eggs when we arrived. It was very interesting seeing how Tina had made a spawning net out of curtains to make it easier to catch the fry when they were hatched. I for one thought it was a great idea and am now sizing up my curtains to see which ones I no onger need! Tim s bonsai coection was very impressive and I was very taken with them and thought it coud be something ese I coud try ti someone tod me you have to be very patient to grow bonsai. Maybe it isn t for me or I just have to buy them aready done! I am a very sporadic gardener so they probaby woudn't have much chance in my garden. Unfortunatey the photos I took of Tim s fish didn't turn out as there was to much refection but I did get some nice photos of his backyard setup. I hadn t had breakfast that morning as I had a ate night the night before and wasn t up to it before I eft home. So when the ovey hot and cod pastries came out I coudn t resist. I decided to start with something sweet and then have something savoury and then finish off with something sweet again!! So to a of you that didn't come, Thanks, so I coud get my fi!! The rain finay decided to come so we hid under Tim s verandah ti it passed then went on to the Bennetts s pace. After driving up a winding driveway and scooting around the back we were greeted with a ovey resort stye setting. I am sure a who came were very impressed and fet very wecome with Aan, Juie and the two dogs greeting a who came. It was hard to decide where to sit, under the verandah area to ook at the fish through the viewing window or up above the pond
