2 Rotary WinS in India Rotary India WinS Program is a pan India campaign initiated by Rotary in India under the eadership of TRF Trustee & Past Rotary Internationa Director Sushi Gupta as its Chairman, in support of the nationa campaign Swachh Bharat : Swachh Vidyaya aunched by HRD Ministry under Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan initiated by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A key feature of the campaign is to ensure that government schoos in India have a set of functioning and we maintained water, sanitation and hygiene faciities. It aims to improve the curricuum and teaching methods whie promoting hygiene practices and community ownership of water and sanitation faciities within schoos. It improves chidren's heath, schoo enroment, attendance and retention and paves the way for new generation of heathy chidren. WASH in Schoos heps fufi the universa right to education and heath and meets its roe in achieving the United Nations Miennium Deveopment Goas, thereby increasing access to primary education, reducing chid mortaity, advancing gender equaity and meeting targets for improving water and sanitation. Water, sanitation and hygiene in schoos refers to a combination of technica and human deveopment components that are necessary to deveop and support appropriate heath and hygiene behavior among chidren eading to a heathy schoo environment. The technica components incude drinking water, handwashing, toiet and soap faciities in the schoo compound for use by chidren and teachers. The human deveopment components are the activities that promote conditions within the schoo and the practices of chidren that hep to prevent water, hygiene and sanitation reated diseases. There are today over 1.45 miion schoos in India. Consistent and committed actions by the Union and state Governments have made great strides in WASH in Schoos. However there are sti chaenges in terms of access to quaity chid friendy WASH faciities and capacity to infuence sustained behavior change ensuring improved water quaity and functionaity of WASH systems both in urban and rura schoos. As per the DISE statistics: 95% of schoos in the country have drinking water faciity. 91% of schoos have separate toiet faciities for girs. 85.8% of schoos have separate toiet faciities for boys. Six out of ten schoos have functioning toiet faciities. 27.4% of boys toiets and 31.5% of girs toiets have water avaiabe in toiets for fushing and ceaning. 51% of the schoos have a designated handwashing space. 12% of the schoos have soap/detergent avaiabe at the handwashing space. 49% of the students wash their hands using ony water. 32% of the chidren wash hands with soap before eating. Good sanitation and hygiene can increase schoo performance and reduce absenteeism - especiay among adoescent girs - thereby contributing to their empowerment and equaity. - Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Secretary-Genera

3 What is WinS (WASH In Schoos) Access to sufficient quantities of safe water for Drinking Handwashing after defecation and before eating, for cooking and persona hygiene. Sufficient water for Ceaning schoo premises. Ceaning/fushing toiets. Ceaning food vesses (Used for Mid-day Meas). 4 Key Benefits of WinS Program Provides a heathy and protective schoo environment minimizing the risk of disease, abuse and excusion to ensure that every chid's basic needs are met, thereby contributing to the right of every chid to receive quaity education with better heath and equity outcomes. Promotes equity by ensuring that a chidren have access to chid friendy WASH faciities, heping chidren to reach their fu potentia. This incudes the provision of separate toiets for boys and girs, guaranteeing privacy and dignity and contributing to girs' schoo attendance and retention. Gender norms and physioogy make privacy more important for girs than boys, and bioogica reaities mean that girs need adequate sanitary faciities at schoo to manage menstruation. Discourages the habit of open defecation in the community by encouraging chidren to insist their famiy members for a toiet in their homes. Supports schoo nutrition. The simpe act of washing hands with soap before eating the schoo mid-day mea assists in breaking disease transmission routes. Encourages pride and commitment to schoo in the chidren and their communities. It enabes every chid to become an agent of change for improving water, sanitation and hygiene practices in their famiies and within their community. A CYCLE OF OPPORTUNITIES Improved Hygiene Economic Growth Improved heath & ess disease A Cean & Heathy Schoo Better Student performance Improved Attendance & Decreased drop-out rate Understanding With HRD Ministry Rotary India in response to a ca for action by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan signed a Chennai Decaration on 16th December, 2014 at Chennai Zona Institute in presence of Shri Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of Urban Deveopment to participate in the nationa campaign of Swachh Vidyaaya Abhyaan. As a foow up to this decaration, Rotary India entered into an understanding with Ministry of Human Resource Deveopment, Schoo Education & Literacy to undertake 10,000 government schoos pan India for maintenance and operation (O&M) of water and sanitation faciities and behavior changes communication activities (BCC) on hygiene habits of chidren in schoos.

5 Coaboration with UNICEF India for Technica Support Taking forward the very unique and successfu partnership in the End Poio Campaign Rotary has coaborated with UNICEF on WASH in Schoos to work towards the shared goas and vision of Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyaaya campaign. Rotary and UNICEF wi together work towards addressing various key institutiona, poicy and financia bottenecks that prevent sustainabe WinS in India; identifying soutions and best practices, positioning these appropriatey. Specific advice about hygiene promotion and behavior change communication at the district eve and at the schoo eve. Advice on monitoring and evauation framework, incuding indicators and methodoogy for monitoring progress. Key Eements of WinS Upgradation of sanitation faciities in schoos incuding the construction of chid friendy separate toiets for boys and girs wherever required and repairs of existing sanitation faciities. 6 Group Handwashing Group Handwashing is a path breaking innovation that can potentiay improve the education and heath outcomes of 110 miion chidren who have mid-day mea daiy, across India. Group Handwashing ensures that a chidren wash hands in 'groups', stand facing each other, exchange positive messages, make 'eye to eye' contact and enjoy the process. Handwashing with soap before the government-suppied Mid-day Mea (MDM) is important because chidren are most energetic, enthusiastic and open to new ideas and change. As powerfu agents of behaviora change, chidren can take essons they have earned at schoo back home to teach their parents, sibings and eders on good hygiene behavior such as handwashing with soap. The handwashing stations are simpe, scaabe and sustainabe, and rey on usage of minimum water, whie the faciities are deveoped using oca materias. The Mission institutionaizes group hand washing with soap sessions before the mid-day meas are served, which is supervised by teachers, DM cooks and aso by Chid Cabinet members. Fast Facts: Washing hands with soap at two critica times after using the toiet and before eating food reduces the incidence of diarrhoea by an average of 30 per cent. Handwashing with soap can reduce the incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) by more than 20 per cent. Handwashing promotion in schoos can pay a roe in reducing the number of days chidren miss schoo. Handwashing with soap is one of the most cost-effective interventions to prevent diarrhea-reated deaths and disease. By washing hands with soap chidren get the nutritiona benefits intended, rather than ingesting bacteria, germs and viruses. Rotary Internationa WASH in Schoos Target Chaenge The Rotary Foundation Trustees, as part of the Foundation's overa strategy to deveop better support to cubs and districts in six areas of focus have agreed to impement a piot project in the deveopment of integrated infrastructure, education, and behaviora change projects for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Schoos within the areas of focus of Water and Sanitation and Basic Education and Literacy for two and a haf years, commencing on 1 January and ending on 30 June 2018 in Beize, Guatemaa, Honduras, India, and Kenya. The piot project sha be conceptuay structured using a three-star (three-eve) impementation and recognition approach, measuring outcomes such as number of schoos with sustainabe WASH faciities, numbers of students invoved, schoo attendance increase, and behaviora criteria. Simpe habit ike washing hands before meas among chidren can prevent many diseases. Lack of this habit caims many young ives in chidren - Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India For further information on Rotary India WinS Program pease contact PDG Ramesh Aggarwa, Member Secretary, Rotary India WinS at Emai : apcorama@gmai.com; raggarwa3010@gmai.com Mobie :
