2 California s Ferret Community We Have Perseverance!!! It takes a special group of people to keep fighting for ferrets and their legalization year after year, and here we are. In 206 we were yet again disappointed in that, after our petitioning and collecting 0,000 signatures for a ballot initiative, we weren t even allowed to meet with legislators and regulators who continue to impose this ferret ban upon us. But this is what makes us special. We love our ferrets and we re willing to work until the day comes that we can take them out in public without fear of confiscation and possible euthanization. We're getting smarter and tougher every year. Although we're further along than ever, obstacles keep coming. We learned a lot in 206 that we'll be putting to work in 207. Keep on working for ferret legalization. We will only be defeated if we give up. Do it for the little guy! Her films have garnered a following of enthusiastic fans from all over the world and have played at top tier film festivals such as TIFF Kids and DC Shorts. Alison's short film credits include Jake & Jasper: A Ferret Tale, The Magic Ferret, Santa's Little Ferrets, and (her latest effort) the stoner comedy Dude, Where's My Ferret? Alison has contributed both financially and creatively to spreading positive publicity for ferrets on a global scale. She's been interviewed by both The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, and has worked with actors from Oscar nominated films (e.g. Jacob Tremblay, whose first lead role was in The Magic Ferret ). 3 Adrenal Disease and Deslorelin Featuring Dr Rene Gandolfi and the Castro Valley Companion Animal Hospital The Bad News: Domestic ferrets are prone to developing Adrenal Disease (AD). In fact, until recently upwards of in 2 ferrets will suffer from AD by the age of five. The Good News: You can now prevent AD in ferrets with a drug called Deslorelin. Currently marketed for use in ferrets in the form of a slow releasing implant, Deslorelin stops the stimulation of the ferret s adrenal glands by control centers in the brain. Dr. Robert Wagner at the University of Pittsburgh first looked at using this drug over ten years ago and found it to be safe and effective in the treatment of many cases of AD. In 2008, as part of Dr. Wagner s research program, Dr. Rene Gandolfi at Castro Valley Companion Animal Hospital started implanting ferrets in California. Since that time, Deslorelin has been used not only in the treatment of AD but for prevention as well. The implant is a simple and safe procedure, costs a whole lot less than surgery, and best of all, you get a happy and healthy ferret. That s Good News. I recommend every ferret over three years of age get an annual implant. The best month to do it is February before Spring gets underway and those hormones start flowing. Our blind Ferret hero, Rodolfo, got the most on-screen time of any ferret in movie history but, alas, he failed to win over Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller. Aniston is quoted as saying It s not the warmest, cuddliest animal. It s just a big rat at the end of the day.
