2 Getting the Best Veterinary Care for California Ferrets We hear it all the time from California ferret owners: I m afraid to take my ferret to the vet. You have nothing to fear California veterinarians can legally treat your ferret and are not required to report you. Specifically, the law reads a veterinarian, registered veterinary technician, or an unregistered assistant working under the supervision of a veterinarian, may provide veterinary care and treatment for any animal restricted pursuant to Section 28 of the Fish and Game Code. It further reads No veterinarian has a duty to advise law enforcement if he or she becomes aware that one or more of the animals is possessed in the state. Despite the ban, California has some of the best veterinary care for ferrets you will find anywhere. In addition to Dr. Gandolfi and Dr. Jenkins, there are many other ferret friendly veterinarians located around the state (see below). While it is safe to take your ferret to a veterinarian, we have heard of veterinarians trying to treat ferrets regardless of their lack of knowledge, training and experience with ferrets. This is a bad thing. Ferrets are not dogs or cats. Their veterinary treatment is different and you need to find a vet who knows what they are doing. Otherwise, you may pay the higher price of both increased cost and endangering your ferret's healthcare. While it is legal to treat ferrets, there are still unethical veterinarians who will see your ferret and wing it. Choose carefully. Jeffrey R. Jenkins, DVM, Diplomate American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital 276 Morena Blvd San Diego, CA Dr. Jenkins received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Utah ( 78), his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University ( 83), completed a Preceptorship at the Denver Zoological Gardens ( 82) and a working residency with Drs. Walter Rosskopf and Richard Woerpel at the Animal Medical Centre in Hawthorne, California ( 83-85). He opened the Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital March 2, 987. Dr. Jenkins is recognized internationally for his work in avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on a variety of subjects and his work published in peer reviewed journals, texts and monographs. Dr. Jenkins holds Diplomate status in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice. He has been actively involved with several veterinary organizations including: the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV), the Eastern States Veterinary Association s North American Veterinary Conference, the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV), the San Diego Veterinary Medical Association, the California Veterinary Medical Association, the National and San Diego Chapter of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Scientists (AALAS), the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners (ASLAP), the California Laboratory Animal Specialists (CLAMS), and the American Association of Avian Pathologist (AAAP). Dr. Jenkins and his practice were instrumental in forming the San Diego Chapter of the House Rabbit Society and Ferrets Anonymous. René C. Gandolfi, DVM, Diplomate American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Castro Valley Companion Animal Hospital 2509 Lessley Ave Castro Valley, CA A 98 graduate of the University of California Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Gandolfi developed his expertise in ferret medicine and surgery through his volunteer work for the California Domestic Ferret Association and local ferret rescue groups as well as extensive consultation with many of the top authorities across the country. His 995 publication on basic ferret medicine was the lead article for the California Veterinary Medical Association s California Veterinarian, heralding the recognition of this species as an important part of the veterinary experience in the State of California. Since then he has lectured on ferret medical topics at numerous veterinary conferences both nationally and internationally. Dr. Gandolfi has been the Veterinary Editor for the American Ferret Association s American Ferret Report, and is a member of the AFA s Health Affairs Committee. He s a regular contributor to Ferrets USA, Ferrets, and Critters USA. For the last 25 years, Dr. Gandolfi has actively campaigned to change California s ill-conceived ban on ferret ownership by attending Dept. of Fish and Game hearings in Sacramento, contacting legislators and news organizations, including legalization topics in his presentations, working with the CVMA s lobbying efforts, and working with groups like Ferrets Anonymous. Dr. Gandolfi owns and runs Castro Valley Companion Animal Hospital where he treats all pet species. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners with certification in Canine and Feline Practice.
