2 NOTICE OF MEETING NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of WERRIBEE OBEDIENCE DOG CLUB INC. will be held at the CLUBROOMS, PRESIDENTS PARK CORNER OF ROWES & HEATH ROADS, WERRIBEE on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 18,2017 at 8.00 P.M. Clause 28(5b) of the Club's Constitution:- Any member who is entitled to vote at the Annual General Meeting, but unable to attend shall be entitled to apply to the Secretary for a postal vote. Application for a postal vote must be in writing and lodged with the Secretary fourteen days prior to the Annual General Meeting. Within seven days the Secretary in the presence of the President and one other Committee member appointed by the Committee will forward an initialled ballot paper to each applicant and record their name. Members to whom ballot papers are posted will under no circumstances be given a second ballot paper. Completed ballot papers are to be returned to the Returning Officer or the Secretary in envelopes endorsed, Ballot Papers. These envelopes shall be handed (unopened) to the Returning Officer officiating at the poll. Clause 30(2)(a) of the Club's Constitution:- Every member who was a financial member of the Club for not less than three months of the financial year preceding the Annual General Meeting and is currently a financial member shall be entitled to vote at the Annual General Meeting and shall be eligible to nominate or be nominated as an Office Bearer or member of the Committee. A member may be nominated for and hold more than one position on the Committee. Clause 14(3) of the Club s Constitution:- Notice of an annual general meeting and the form of nomination of Committee of Management shall be deemed to have been given to each member if they are published in, or enclosed with, the Club s newsletter or journal or such other publication as the Club may circulate to its members provided that such publication is despatched to each member not less than thirty days prior to the date of the annual general meeting or if they are served upon him personally not less than twenty-eight days prior to the date of that meeting or if they are sent through the post not less than thirty days prior to the meeting addressed to each member at the address shown in the Register of Members. 3 The Werribee Obedience Dog Club would not exist without the wonderful members that volunteer their time to become a Committee member. We are looking for volunteers to put their hands up and nominate to be on the Committee for 2017/2018 at our next AGM. Being on the Committee is a very rewarding experience as you are involved with both the routine running of the club and also the future of the club. There is a monthly Committee meeting that we would ask you to attend, help out with counter duties for approximately 30 minutes on a Saturday if you come to training and to assist on the Induction table when new members join the club once a month. There would be other little jobs you may be allocated on a Funday, at our Obedience Trial or other event. Full training will be provided to all Volunteers so don t be afraid to give it a go and help the club! 5 What dogs hear when we talk to them By Virginia Morell Jan. 10, 2017, 7:15 PM We often say the same sweet, nonsensical things to our dogs that we say to our babies and in almost the same slow, high-pitched voice. Now, scientists have shown that puppies find our pooch-directed speech exciting, whereas older dogs are somewhat indifferent. The findings show, for the first time, that young dogs respond to this way of talking, and that it may help them learn words as such talk does with human babies. To find out how dogs reacted to human speech, Nicolas Mathevon, a bioacoustician at the University of Lyon in Saint Étienne, France, and his colleagues first recorded the voices of 30 women as they looked at a dog s photograph and read from a script, Hi! Hello cutie! Who s a good boy? Come here! Good boy! Yes! Come here sweetie pie! What a good boy! (The scientists were afraid the women would ad lib if they spoke to a real dog.) The women also repeated the passage to a person. When the scientists compared the human- and dog-directed speech, they found that, as expected, the women spoke in distinctive, high-pitched, sing-song tones to the pooches but not the humans. It didn t matter if it was a puppy or an adult dog, Mathevon says. But the women did speak at an even higher pitch when looking at puppy photos. Next, the researchers played these recordings in short trials with 10 puppies and 10 adult dogs at a New York City animal shelter and videotaped their responses. Nine of the puppies reacted strongly, barking and running toward the loudspeaker even when the recording had been made for an older dog, the team reports today in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Some even bent toward the loudspeaker in a play bow, a pose meant to initiate horseplay, suggesting they may regard dog-directed speech as an invitation to play, Mathevon says. The puppies were less interested in the recordings of the women speaking to the person. And the adult dogs? They didn t care at all, Mathevon says. It made no difference if they heard speech directed at puppies, older dogs, or humans. They had a quick look at the speaker, and then ignored it. The scientists aren t sure why the adult dogs were so disinterested. It may be that they need to interact with an actual person, not a disembodied voice, or that they need to hear a familiar voice, Mathevon says. But for the puppies, the women s exaggerated, high-pitched, dog-directed speech served a purpose: It got their attention, says Mathevon, who thinks this way of talking may help them learn words, just as our baby talk helps human infants learn language. Other research, however, disputes this idea. Still, the study shows that even in our speech we care for and treat dogs of all ages like human infants, which is likely an important part of their success in human environments, says Monique Udell, an animal behaviorist at Oregon State University in Corvallis who was not involved with the work. The scientists don t yet know whether puppies have an innate response to dog-directed speech or whether it is something they learn. It will also take further study to figure out whether the words in dog-directed speech mean something more to the puppies, or whether it helps them learn words. You will also find a donation tin there if you are wishing to make a donation. And after a hard days training why not come inside for a cold beer or wine. 9 WHAT IS A FUNDAY? FUNDAYS REPLACE OUR NORMAL TRAINING DAY AND IS OPEN TO ALL MEMBERS This is your chance to demonstrate in a one on one situation of your training progression so far. For classes puppy to 3, instructors of the club will put you and your faithful companion through a series of exercises that you have been doing in your class each week. For those in class 4 or higher the club endeavours to invite external judges to judge on the day If you gain a qualifying score or better, you will be promoted up to the next class level. Should you win your class or even gain a second or third placing you will be acknowledged by receiving a trophy and ribbon for first place and a ribbon for second or third. BUT, you won't know if you're a grinner unless you stay for presentation ENTRY FORMS & FEES ARE TAKEN AT THE OFFICE COUNTER Entry fee is $2 per dog and includes a sausage sizzle $2 must be paid at the time of entry IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENTER IN YOUR CORRECT CLASS LEVEL PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT OFFICIALLY ENTER, YOU CANNOT PARTICIPATE ON THE DAY. THERE IS NO NORMAL TRAINING ON THIS DAY Due to the exercises required for Rally Obedience, you are only eligible to participate if you are in Class 4 or higher Competitors please note that the Rally Obedience and Agility results WILL NOT be included in any Club Awards presented at the end of the year Voluntary help from our membership will be required with setting up and pulling down of rings, check-in and general odd jobs throughout the day We will also have a Raffle on the day to raise funds for the club. Last of all, your committee and your instructors also wish to participate with their dogs so there may be delays / hold-ups within your ring if your judge has to compete with his dog in another ring. Please be patient. If it's a nice day bring a rug, chairs, dog stake or crate and if wet, bring your wet weather gear and have a great day Page 9 of 18

10 GIVE ME SPACE We occasionally have dogs at the club that require some space around them. Like people, all dogs are different and some dogs don t cope very well when their space is encroached upon by handlers or other dogs. These Give Me Space vests are not exclusively for dogs with aggression issues, but also for dogs that may have fear-based behaviours. To identify these dogs, they wear a yellow vest, similar to the picture above By a dog wearing these space vests the club believes it is a safe way for the dog to still participate in their class and slowly socialise and integrate within their training class. This also makes the class as safe as possible for all handlers and their dogs and instructors too. Remember, we are working with animals, so we need you, our members, to learn to recognise when these dogs are wearing these vests and give them the space that they require. If you are around the clubrooms or in class and see a dog with a vest on, please assist the handler and their dog by keeping your dog at least 1 metre away. You may be asked to move further away by the owner or Instructor if they feel you are too close, please respect their request If you believe your dog would benefit from wearing a space vest, please discuss it with the Chief Instructor. Please do not get offended if your dog is asked to wear a space vest in class. We have vests for small dogs and up to large dogs Page 10 of 18
