8 VALE RORY Mark and Lynn Klecka recently had to say goodbye to their beloved Golden Retriever, Rory. VALE BENSON Just 9 months old 9/5/ /2/2013 I had to make the heart breaking decision on Wednesday 20 th February to have Benson put to sleep. On his regular morning walks, he would take a couple of steps and then lie down and not get up until he was ready to. Benson was diagnosed with bad to severe hip dysplasia in both hips after having x-rays and a full medical. The prognosis was not good. He also suffered from behavioural issues, most likely because of the pain he was in. Benson will join Brody at Rainbow Bridge. Special thanks to Geoff and Amanda Vella and Brian and Colleen Bushell for their kindness and support. Gone far too soon when your life was just beginning but will remain forever in my heart. 8 P a g e V o l u m e

9 The following was found posted VERY LOW on a refrigerator door. Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest. The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run. I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm. For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required. The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough. Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door: TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS: (1) They live here. You don't. (2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it fur-niture. (3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people. (4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly. Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they: (1) eat less, (2) don't ask for money all the time, (3) are easier to train, (4) normally come when called, (5) never ask to drive the car, (6) don't smoke or drink, (7) don't want to wear your clothes, (8) don't have to buy the latest fashions, (9) don't need a gazillion dollars for college and (10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children... 10 MELBOURNE VETERINARY SCIENCE AND HOSPITAL OPEN DAY 17 TH MARCH 2013 The day started early for some, with Colin and the agility crew setting up a small but interesting course and as always it was well received by the public. Obedience demonstrations are always a crowd favourite with a number of people saying the usual I wish my dog would do that. As an addition to the program we this year had an information talk and a demonstration of what your dog can achieve in Dancing. This was presented by Jeannette Wilson. A Rally demonstration was also given this year hosted by a group of members. As a bonus we also had a pet pig go through the Rally ring. Just as well that we weren t timing the pig s run he was a little bit slow. Thank you to all the members who assisted on the day. It was a very enjoyable day for all involved. 11 WEERAMA FESTIVAL PARADE I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of being a part of a group of approximately 20 members who walked in the Weerama Festival Parade this year. Being the first time in this type of event for both myself and Buddy I was a little nervous and very excited as I didn t really know what to expect. The way the dogs behaved and the smiles on the faces of the people watching the dogs perform some of their sit stays, stand stays and drop stays was great. I feel proud to have been part of such a great day. The members that attended put on a display that the general public enjoyed immensely, with numerous pictures taken and lots of rounds of applause. There were brochures handed out to people watching the parade so hopefully there might be some new members from the day as well. I for one will be attending next year all being well and hopefully we will have the same welcome reception from the general Werribee Community. Sue Anderson Club Member 11 P a g e V o l u m e

12 When walking your dog in the areas adjacent to the Clubrooms, around Presidents Park and especially down by the River be on the lookout for Snakes, as they are out and about at this time of the year. The club will be holding a Postie Fashion day on 20 th April For members who do not know what Postie is, it is women s clothing. The clothing is of very good quality and will last years (I know, I have some tops which I have had for 10 or more years and they still look good). This will run from 11.30am to 3.00pm so all members will have a chance to check out the clothes and try them on before going to class. Postie s new autumn/winter range will be on show and sizes range from There will also be some summer clothing at 50% off What a Bargain! Remember this is a club s fund raising event. 24 GIVE ME SPACE We occasionally have dogs at the club that require some space around them. Like people, all dogs are different and some dogs don t cope very well when their space is encroached upon by handlers or other dogs. These Give Me Space vests are not exclusively for dogs with aggression issues, but also for dogs that may have fear-based behaviours. To identify these dogs, they wear a yellow vest, similar to the picture below. By a dog wearing these space vests the club believes it is a safe way for the dog to still participate in their class and slowly socialise and integrate within their training class. This also makes the class as safe as possible for all handlers and their dogs and instructors too. Remember, we are working with animals, so we need you, our members, to learn to recognise when these dogs are wearing these vests and give them the space that they require. If you are around the clubrooms or in class and see a dog with a vest on, please assist the handler and their dog by keeping your dog well away. You may be asked to move further away by the owner if they feel you are too close, please respect their request. If you believe your dog would benefit from wearing a space vest please discuss it with the Chief Instructor. Please do not get offended if your dog is asked to wear a space vest in class. We have vests for small dogs and up to large dogs. If your dog is required to wear a space vest: Enquire/or collect one from the office, at least minutes before your class starts. We will require a $5.00 refundable deposit when you pick up the space vest. The vest must be returned promptly at the end of your class, so members from the next hour can access it. The vest is only for use on the training ground. Do not let your dog swim in the lake with the vest on. Your deposit will be returned to you when you return the vest after class. If any vest is returned damaged your refund will be forfeited. Please REMEMBER to tidy up after YOUR DOG. 24 P a g e V o l u m e
