2 PRESIDENT S PAGE. Hi All This past month has been a busy time. I am pleased to say that after several meetings with the council over the last few months we have finally had our two roller doors to the store room fitted with electric motors for us to remotely open and close. This will make it much easier for us where we will not have to undo padlocks and lift doors etc. This also follows on from the installation of additional PowerPoints in the office and behind the TV This month we have another Fun Day on the 25 th August. Details can be found in this newsletter. We start setting up on the day at 11am. If you can help either setting up on the day or packing up at the completion of the classes, the committee would greatly appreciate your help on the day. Remember many hands make light work The clubs Annual General Meeting is coming up in September. We are looking for members to get involved in the running of the club by being on the committee. So, what does it involve being on the committee. There is a monthly Committee meeting that we would ask you to attend, help with counter duties for approximately minutes on a Saturday and to assist on the Induction table when new members join the club once a month. There would be other little jobs you may be allocated on a Funday, at our Obedience Trial or other event. Full training will be provided to all Volunteers so don t be afraid to give it a go and help the club. Being on the Committee is a very rewarding experience as you are involved with both the routine running of the club and the future of the club. Please give it some thought On Sunday 16 September, the club is participating in the Wyndham Pet & Animal Expo. We have been allocated 3 x 15 minutes time slots to do demonstration on the day. One will consist of an Obedience demonstration, another one will be Agility and the last one will be Dances with Dogs. I will supply more info in next month s newsletter. On Grand final day the 29 th September, the club will be having various demonstrations of different dog s sports on the day such as Dances with dogs, Agility, retrieving etc. There will be a short training session conducted after each one of these demonstrations and we will be encouraging you to get involved with your own dogs. More details will be published in next month s newsletter Until next month, enjoy your time with you four-legged family member and remember lots of short training sessions during the week Ray Ashman President Page 2 of 20

3 BOOFHEAD From a story on ABC Riverina by Verity Gorman The story of Red Dog was made into a very popular film. It is the story of Red Dog a red cloud kelpie said to have hitched rides, adopted people and united communities in the mining region of Western Australia. Boofhead has a similar story. He was a spirited dog that travelled the railways in southern New South Wales. Like Red Dog he captured the hearts of locals becoming legendary in Temora a small country town. The black and white fox terrier first appeared at the Temora railway station in 1959 and soon became known as Tamora s railway dog. With no known owner he spent 15 years hitching train rides throughout the region and regularly returned to Temora. No one ever claimed ownership of him but many people were willing to give him a home. He would go home with anybody get a feed and then return to the station to sleep. Then he would be off again. It didn t matter which way it was going he would just jump on a train and go. He did however prefer steam trains to diesels as he felt confined in the diesel cabins. Sometimes he would miss a train on the way back to Temora and he would spend the night on the platform waiting g for a train to come then he would jump on it. He would often go missing for several days at a time until one day his train would come in and he would be back. When the railway shut down on a Sunday he was likely to be found at the football because he knew that there was a feed there. He d get half a hotdog or a pie. Boofhead was so well-known he was made a life member of the Temora RSL Club and had the tag on his collar to prove it. At first, he got kicked out the back door and he'd come in the front door so they made him a member. A bronze statue has been unveiled in Temora to honour the dog's legacy. photos from Temora Independent Page 3 of 20

10 GIVE ME SPACE. We occasionally have dogs at the club that require some space around them. Like people, all dogs are different and some dogs don t cope very well when their space is encroached upon by handlers or other dogs. These Give Me Space vests are not exclusively for dogs with aggression issues, but also for dogs that may have fear-based behaviours. To identify these dogs, they wear a yellow vest, similar to the picture above By a dog wearing these space vests the club believes it is a safe way for the dog to still participate in their class and slowly socialise and integrate within their training class. This also makes the class as safe as possible for all handlers and their dogs and instructors too. Remember, we are working with animals, so we need you, our members, to learn to recognise when these dogs are wearing these vests and give them the space that they require. If you are around the clubrooms or in class and see a dog with a vest on, please assist the handler and their dog by keeping your dog at least 1 metre away. You may be asked to move further away by the owner or Instructor if they feel you are too close, please respect their request If you believe your dog would benefit from wearing a space vest, please discuss it with the Chief Instructor. Please do not get offended if your dog is asked to wear a space vest in class. We have vests for small dogs and up to large dogs Page 10 of 20
