2 Americans will chow down on 7 billion hot dogs this summer, most never wondering about the origin of the strangely shaped sandwich with the odd name. Nonetheless, in case someone asks, here are some clues from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Hot Diggity Dachshund? Hot dogs might be an invention of college wags. One of the first confirmed written references comes from a Yale magazine in 1895 in which students are described as "contentedly munching hot dogs." In fact, a hot dog vendor's cart was called The Kennel Club. Some say the hot dog was popularized by a cartoonist, Tad Dorgan, during the 1930's when he saw his friend Harry Stevens selling the "hot dachshund sausages" during a game at the New York Polo Grounds and shouting, "get your red-hot dachshund sausages!" Dorgan was said to have sketched a cartoon of Stevens pitching a sandwich with a dachshund. It had the caption: Get your hot dogs! But no proof of this cartoon has ever materialized. There is evidence, however, that German immigrants sold 'hot dogs' from carts in the Bowery in the 1860 s. And, after all, the Germans are known for their sausages. Maybe the better question is how the hot dog bun was developed. One story features a vendor in the 1870's who provided white gloves to customers who bought his sandwiches. When customers did not return the gloves, he reportedly asked his brother-in-law, a baker, for help. The baker improvised long soft rolls that fit the meat - thus inventing the hot dog bun. Not surprisingly, mustard remains Americans favorite hot dog topping, but ketchup has shown a steady increase in popularity, according to a survey conducted by Harris Poll. Health Corner Millions of people suffer from chronic pain. The most common types of pain are arthritis, lower back, bone/joint pain, muscle pain and fibromyalgia or chronic widespread pain affecting various parts of the body. Treating chronic pain is often difficult, even with surgery. Many non-surgical options are also available to manage pain. The question that most patients ask is does pain management really work? The answer is that it does provided that specialists administer the treatment. The evaluation and management of pain is now a highly specialized field. Many factors are responsible for causing pain and therefore a multidisciplinary approach is required to treat it. Such specialized chronic pain management involves an integrated and coordinated intervention from different disciplines with a common goal. Available at multi-specialty healthcare centers, pain management treatment usually includes pain management specialists, physical therapists, neurologists, chiropractors, orthopedic specialists, nurses, and other associate staff. This approach typically includes a thorough evaluation which involves: reviewing the patient s medical history and a physical and comprehensive examination; diagnostic testing; formulation of a treatment plan; and a coordinated team treatment. Treatment is often provided on an out-patient basis, with the patient needing to come to the center for a specified number of hours a week. Contact your doctor to explore the range of treatment options available for managing chronic pain and to see if pain management treatment may be right for you.

10 John Shumway s Corner One of the most amazing historical events of our lifetimes reached a climax in On Christmas Day of that year, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev shocked the world, announcing the dissolution of the Soviet Union and his resignation as its president. After almost 75 years, which, some of the time the world seemed to teeter on the brink of a nuclear holocaust, the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States ended. Although at its peak the Soviet Union had more than 5 million soldiers stationed internationally and enough nuclear power to destroy the human race, members of the Soviet high command gave up power without a shot being fired. This sudden collapse of one of the world s great empires stunned most of us in the West. When he became president of the Soviet Union in 1985, Gorbachev inherited both a moribund economy and a crumbling political system. Many historians believe that the two policies he put in place to address the nation s challenges, glasnost ( openness ) and perestroika ( restructuring ), hastened the dissolution of the Soviet system, which was already in decline. Could it be that the sudden realization of the real situation in the USSR by her people began the collapse? The Soviet system was based almost entirely upon lies. At every level Soviet workers and administrators were required to produce some assigned economic or political goal. If that goal was not met the subsequent punishment was often very severe. Usually the goals set were not realistic, but the punishment for failure was very real indeed. To most workers in the USSR the solution to this great problem was to simply lie about what they accomplished. Their bosses also lied to their bosses who lied to their bosses, and so up the chain of command. These lies went to the very top so that literally no intelligent citizen believed anything the Leader or his government said. As a result almost no person in authority within this system knew what was really happening. The Russian people did not know some painful, long covered up, truths such as: industrial output was way down, alcoholism was high and growing, infant mortality was rising, life expectancy at birth was declining. Living standards in the West were greatly outpacing those in the USSR. In time the whole rotten system fell apart because nobody on top had any real idea of what was actually going on. This was the case until the Soviet system totally collapsed of its own internal rot. Is there anything Americans could profitability learn from this story? 12 Maintaining Mobility Through Exercise It s something we ve heard for years - exercise can help older adults maintain their mobility and avoid physical disability. But you don t have to take our word for it, a study from the University of Florida has proven it. In 2014, the study proved that daily moderate physical activity may make the difference between seniors being able to keep up everyday activities or becoming housebound. Furthermore, the study proved that moderate physical activity helped aging adults to maintain their ability to walk at a rate 18% higher than their counterparts who did not exercise. The very purpose of the study is to provide definitive evidence that physical activity can truly improve the independence of older adults, said principal investigator, Marco Pahor, Ph.D., Director of the Institute on Aging for the University of Florida. The study demonstrated that a modest increase in physical activity has the potential to help older adults maintain functional independence. The Live 2 B Healthy program aims to help seniors do just that - maintain their independence. Every participant in our Live 2 B Healthy programs is tested 3 times per year to measure improvement in balance, flexibility, strength and endurance. These tests results are provided to the individual so they can monitor and measure their progress. My goals are to remain independent by maintaining my strength and mobility. I find that attending the Live 2 B Healthy program, it fulfills that purpose and also gives me a chance to meet my neighbors. Live 2 B Healthy exercises are specifically designed to tackle issues that the aging face such as loss of balance, mobility and muscle tone. Our trainers also provide modifications for those with specific limitations so that everyone can be successful. u u
