Rescued animals are not damaged animals. It is simple they have been failed by humans. They have had their hearts broken through neglect and abuse by the very human beings who vowed to love and protect them. For twenty years, Fuzzy Friends Rescue has been a safe place where healing begins for so many abused, neglected, and unwanted animals; a place where the seed of hope is planted for a new chance at life. The past year has brought new challenges to Fuzzy Friends Rescue as the City of Waco continues to strive to become a NO-KILL city. To maintain such a status Fuzzy Friends Rescue is playing a critical role by rescuing animals from the Waco Municipal Shelter every week. With the added commitment to help our city, we are seeing so many more animals that have been neglected emotionally and physically. Many have never been cared for at all, so we have seen an increase in animals that are in desperate need of expensive and extensive medical care. Without Fuzzy Friends Rescue, these otherwise very adoptable companion animals would have absolutely nowhere to go. We simply cannot continue to be a people who love only their dogs or their cats. We cannot turn a blind eye to our own animals brothers and sisters who are in desperate need of help right now. We ALL have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to stop the senseless euthanasia of these wonderful creatures solely because they are homeless. It is a privilege for us to serve as the General Chairmen for the 2016 Fuzzy Friends Rescue Barkin Ball, as it gives us an important opportunity to be a voice for the voiceless. Because of you, Fuzzy Friends Rescue will continue to be able to give second chances for so many deserving animals. 3 WE HELP WACO At Fuzzy Friends Rescue, we work handin-hand with our community, offering our knowledge and services. From saving the lives of animals to our wonderful community outreach programs, we are making an impact throughout Central Texas year after year. HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE THINGS WE DO TO HELP WACO: We rescue animals from our city streets and highways. We provide a clean, safe environment for unwanted, abandoned, and lost pets. We examine every animal that comes to our rescue to ensure health and safety. Our Spay/Neuter Program helps to ensure that all animals adopted through Fuzzy Friends Rescue have been spayed or neutered. We have rescued more than 15,000 animals, since incorporating as a non-profit organization in We provide micro-chipping services to the community to help reunite lost pets with their owners. We provide humane education regarding animal safety and animal welfare to Boy and Girl Scout troops, civic groups, and schools. We participate in career fairs for local schools regarding the field of animal rescue and animal welfare. Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ) help at-risk students at local elementary schools improve their reading skills. Our SMILES Pet Therapy Program visits area nursing homes to bring joy and comfort to residents. We work with students at McLennan Community College, Texas State Technical College and Baylor University on course projects and provide internships opportunities. We house animals during natural disasters such a tornados, floods, or fires. We temporarily house pets for families fleeing domestic violence or for families experiencing a crisis such as homelessness. We work closely with other shelters in our community to continue the efforts to help Waco become a no-kill city. In the last 3 years, we have rescued 490 animals from our Waco Shelter. 3

4 Mission Statement Fuzzy Friends Rescue believes that animals, as living creatures are entitled to a quality life, respect and compassion. Since humans have domesticated animals, we have a moral and ethical responsibility to care for the animals. Our mission is to provide shelter, food, medical treatment and love to our community s animals that are abandoned, unwanted, or otherwise in need. We want to instill in our community an awareness of the animals whose world we share; encouraging and promoting responsible pet ownership. Who We Are Fuzzy Friends Rescue is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) animal welfare organization that cares for homeless and unwanted animals in a life-care environment. We never euthanize an animal to make room for another, and we care for all those we take in until they are adopted. We try to place these animals in new homes with caring families as soon as possible. Some stay at Fuzzy Friends Rescue only a matter of days or weeks, but sometimes it takes months of care and rehabilitation before they are able to go to a new home. In some cases for those harder-toplace animals, their stay may be a year or more. Unless they have developed an incurable disease or they are aggressive, they have a home at Fuzzy Friends Rescue until a permanent, loving home is found for them Vision for Fuzzy Friends Rescue The 2020 Vision carries a twofold meaning that reflects the core convictions of our commitment to rescued animals, those of which are integrity, trust, loyalty, care, and compassion for abandoned and homeless animals that are housed at our facility until they are adopted. Drawing from this vision, our desire is for the public to see a clear, focused, and visible view of that commitment and the plans that Fuzzy Friends Rescue has to advance and expand its current facility, which was established in 1999 to meet the needs through the year Rescued from our shelter YOUR SUPPORT MAKES THIS POSSIBLE 4 It is very exciting that the City of Waco has taken the initiative to become a no-kill city. Fuzzy Friends Rescue, along with other community rescues, is now playing a vital role in helping to achieve this goal. In order for us to continue to pull dogs to safety from our city shelter, support from our community champions is more important than ever to our life saving mission. There are always new animals coming to us every week. Your continued support enables us to help these animals become happy, healthy, and well-adjusted pets with a real chance of being adopted quickly. These animals depend on human kindness for their survival, and we have seen so many success stories this year. The successes we have achieved in saving so many lives are your successes as well. 5 Read Progr am WHAT? DOGS CAN T READ! Of course they can t, but they can be great listeners, and their presence creates an inviting and motivating environment that is: Relaxed Comfortable Safe Non-judgmental Empowering Fun BUT WHY DOGS? SMILES Therapy Program Learning to read is often less about intellectual limitation than about overcoming fears. Fear can destroy intelligence, says educator, William Ayers. Animals are ideal reading companions because they: Help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure Listen attentively Do not judge, laugh, or criticize Allow children to proceed at their own pace Are less intimidating than peers When a READ dog is listening, the environment is transformed; a child s dread is replaced by eager anticipation and learning occurs. Our volunteers are great! They shift the performance pressure off of the child and provide gentle support. In turn, the child gains supervised reading practice which is necessary to build vocabulary, increase understanding of the material, and gain fluency as a reader. Participating children make enormous strides not only in reading and communication skills, but they also are building self-esteem, confidence, and social skills. Performance in other subjects tends to improve, as does attendance and a more positive outlook. To see children, who were once insecure and embarrassed, now excited and wanting to read, makes this program so rewarding! Each month, Fuzzy Friends Rescue takes shelter animals to area nursing homes. Many of the residents do not have any other visitors, except for these animals. The love the pets give to the residents is invaluable. They hold them in their laps, petting them. In return the residents receive attention and a quiet love and understanding expressed between both. Many of the nursing home residents make special toys or sweaters for the animals and all seem to try to have a treat for them when they come for a visit. Even the grouchiest resident seems to soften when Fuzzy Friends arrives. Both, it seems, really do understand each other and both are grateful for the love and attention that is given. 5

The songs they cover are familiar and fun, but they add their own groovy and unique style to every single one.
