1 The Golden West The Official Newsletter of the Evergreen Golden Retriever Club November 20, 2016 Volume 48, issue 11 Next General Membership Meeting in December December 3, :30pm At Kirkland Women s Club map Holiday Party The EGRC Holiday Party will be held Saturday, December 3rd, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Kirkland Woman s Club, 407 1st Street in Kirkland. Please respond to the Survey Monkey Invitation as soon as possible to let us know if you are coming to the party or not. The Club will provide the turkey, and party-goers will bring the appetizers, side dishes, other main dishes and desserts. Volunteers will be needed for setting up starting at 4:30 p.m. You will receive work credit for this and we could really use your help. For the gift exchange (which is always a blast!), please bring a wrapped gift valued at no more than $25. This is one time of year that we can all connect and share some fun. Please join in, and be sure to invite any prospectivenew members as well. If you know of anyone interested in joining the club, this is a great opportunity to have them meet a lot of members in a great setting. Please have them contact Connie Carroll at conniecarroll@comcast.net. She would be glad to fill them in on the details and welcome them to the party. Happy Holiday Season page 1

2 From your new President First I want to say a very big Thank you to our outgoing president Nancy Light, she has done an outstanding job for many years now, always keeping things moving, when nobody wanting to take on the role of President. I am pleased too, that most of the Board members will remain on the board, thank you to Susan Babich s work on the board and welcome to Marion Tillman for joining us. I will certainly try to do my best to navigate us through 2017 with the help of all the board members, and hope we will resolve our ongoing problem with finding a suitable location for our annual Specialty Show. One of my goals for 2017 will be a Membership Drive; if we don t get more members, there will be no EGRC 10 years from now. Most of us are greying and are not as energetic as we used to be. So getting younger members would be great too. So lots to think about for 2017! Hope to see you all at our Holiday Party! From EGRC Specialty Chair Sheila Colyer Iturriaga: We thought we had found a home for the EGRC specialty with the Sammamish Kennel Club. But as you may have heard, Whidbey Island Kennel Club denied Sammamish s request to hold the show within the Whidbey Island area as designated by AKC. The issue is still being discussed so there is no final resolution but there is no guarantee that Sammamish will hold their show in Because of this uncertainty, it is not in EGRC s best interest to plan and contract with judges for the Sammamish weekend. I revisited the other site options from the previous surveys and discussed these with the board. The decision was made to hold the show in conjunction with the Olympic Kennel Club show. I have been in contact with Tim Ufkes, show chair for Olympic, and she has communicated that they are very excited to have us join them. The date is August 18, There will be more details coming soon including the judges. If you are interested in volunteering to help, please drop me a note. Letme know if you have any questions. New Member application to vote on at the Holiday Party: Tami Hoeft (Non-Voting member) Attended/helped at the EGRC Specialty August 26/ Has 3 Golden Retrievers, is participating at Conformation shows, wants to get into Obedience and Pet Partners Therapy Program, when she is semiretired. Is interested in helping with Hospitality in the future. She is sponsored by Julie Matney and Sheila Colyer. page 2

Vote under new business. BRAGS: Brags were made. ELECTION OF NEW MEMBERS: Robin Adair-Marshall was voted into membership. UNFINISHED BUSINESS a. Department of Fish and Wildlife meetings. Meeting on September 15 with DFW and dog training group. Looks like there is finally some movement from DFW on expanding use of Cherry Valley for dog training. Area and available dates being expanded, can use during nesting season. But there is also group being formed that will be trying to enroll dog clubs and individuals for possible leasing of land. Offers apparently made on Peppers (which is for sale) so that land is in jeopardy for training. NEW BUSINESS a. MOTION: to accept the proposal from the Donations Committee as presented. APPROVED. b. No names were presented from the floor for the Board of Directors, so the slate presented by the Nominating Committee will stand. ADJOURMENT: 8:05 PM Respectfully submitted, Nancy Light, acting Recording Secretary EGRC page 17

18 Evergreen Golden Retriever Club October General Membership and Annual Meeting Minutes Kirkland Library, Kirkland WA October 27, :30 pm CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by President Nancy Light at 7:35 p.m. Welcome to our guests and new members. MINUTES The minutes for the September meeting will be printed in the November GW and approved at the Dec meeting. REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT: (Nancy): In lieu of a program, and after the election, we are going to focus on Specialty related issues. These include the Whidbey Island Kennel Club not accepting the Sammamish Kennel Club to be holding their August show on what would be an encroachment on the WIKC territory. That would not prohibit EGRC from having a specialty on Friday, and perhaps Saturday, but we would be on our own. In addition, the current chair, Sheila Colyer, has lost her employment and her presence in this area next summer could be in jeopardy. We will need to find at the least, a co-chair who can commit to being on show grounds. We are also being courted by OKC to return to their show for Friday, and perhaps Wednesday prior. Many moving parts and we need to discuss and see what folks are thinking about possibilities, such as a stand-alone Specialty at Argus, perhaps on one of the agility weekends. REPORT OF THE BOARD - (Nancy) REPORT OF THE CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: (Sandy) Notice from AKC that no application has been received for a tracking test on our corresponding date in April Sent to Nancy, they seem not to have her current address. Sandy will contact them. REPORT OF TREASURER: (Linda ) Amounts will be on our website, members only. REPORT OF COMMITTEES: AGILITY TRIALS: (Joyce) June 17, 18 & 19, and Sept 2, 3, and 4. Awaiting financial report for September trials. SPECIALTY 2016: (Sheila) August 26-27, 2016: Financial report with planned vs actual will be on the website. We did have a profit. SPECIALTY 2016: (Sheila). As noted in the President s report, date and location are in flux and will be discussed as the evening program. TRACKING: (Joan) - No test planned for 2017 GOLDEN WEST: (Ane) October GW is out, thank you Ane, it looks great. Whidbey Island Kennel Club has refused to allow the Sammamish Kennel Club permission to use their current site as it is in their territory. That means we either have to hold a stand alone on the Sammamish site and put up our own canopies or consider other location. Choices included waiting for WIKC to change their minds, go with Olympic Kennel Club on Friday as in 2015, move to Enumclaw Fairgrounds on August 5-6 as stand alone, go to Argus on our June agility trial date (and cancel agility), go with Nisqually Kennel Club at their new location.
