1 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE EVERGREEN GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB December 2015 Volume 47, Issue 12 Frank & Deb Pampiks celebrated their beautiful Bella's 15th birthday on December 13, What better way to ring in the new year than this lovely photo, taken by Claudia Shaw, of Sunbeams Justa Twinkle In Her Eye. May we all have the opportunity to share 15 years and more with the dogs who do so much for us. Happy New Year, Bella (and all the members of EGRC)!

2 Page 2 Rescue Report December 2015 Rich Randall President, Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue We are about to a close for the Rescue efforts for Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue (EGRR) in 2015, which has seen about 25 dogs in the various stages of Rescue. The recent intake of a couple or three very young dogs seems more and more the anomaly than the rule. The intake more broadly this year is roughly comparable to the ongoing year-to-year pattern. And that is toward an increasing emphasis on senior dogs or medically-needy dogs or both. Examples of such 2015 intakes are a 10 year old male who had his ear pinna surgically removed for a localized cancer and then underwent electro-chemotherapy to clean up the margins, a 4 old female who had her left rear leg and part of her pelvis surgically removed for a malignant tumor, or a 7 year old male who has been in foster care for 8 months now to deal with multiple matters including severe allergies, ear infections, pigmentary uveitis and issue with cholesterol. Therefore, the veterinary expense outlay for 2015 is well on track to considerably exceed that of To put that into perspective, 2014 veterinary expenses were previously a significant jump to an all-time cost high for a calendar year. There also continues to be substantial pressure and strain on EGRR s foster home situation with many of these senior and needy dogs holding longer-term places in our more experienced foster homes. However, on the glass is half full plus side, a number of very lucky dogs have successfully been placed in forever homes. And this is due to everyone who has volunteered in the Rescue activities for EGRR during 2015 and to those who supported EGRR through donations and kind words. A reminder that the 2016 Membership renewal period is now upon us. It is wonderful to think of all those that have kept their memberships going year after year, and we kindly ask everyone to do so again for calendar year 2016!!! Have a great upcoming Holiday period and certainly all the very Best Wishes for the coming New Year! We are advising our Rescue members and adopters to keep their pets safe and away from possibly tantalizing things that abound and do not mix well with health of dogs examples being chocolate treats, holly and poinsettia plants, snow globes containing ethylene glycol (antifreeze), light strings!!! The primary focus of Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue (EGRR) is on rescuing Golden Retrievers in need. Driven by our belief in responsible pet ownership, we are dedicated to ensuring for dogs such as these a future of care and affection.

3 Page 3 Making It Special 2016 Specialty update Lots of progress has been made since the November Golden West update. Sandy Burr has stepped up to Saturday obedience/rally chair position so EGRC will be holding 2 allbreed Obedience and Rally trials. The feedback from the other specialty clubs and Sammamish is positive. Thanks goes to Nancy for making both days happen. The contracts are returned so we can announce the judges. We do not have anyone for the 4-6 month class either day but Hach is working hard on getting these filled. Friday Conformation-Kathy Lorentzen Sweepstakes-Joyce Kinghorn Obedience-Earl Vaughan Rally-Debbie Addicoat Junior Showmanship-Anders Thoreson 4-6 month-??? Saturday Conformation and Junior Showmanship-Nancy Talbot Sweepstakes-Shannon Scheer Obedience-Sue Cox Rally-Debbie Addicoat 4-6 month-?? The process with AKC has been somewhat slow, but as of 12/16, everything (events and judging panels) have been approved except for the judges for the 4-6 month class being unassigned. On Saturday, the classes for Junior Showmanship needed to be updated, but AKC assured me they would be fixed by 12/18. We still have a couple other chair positions open. We really need to get these filled so please consider stepping up for one of these: Catalog sales Judges hospitality-day of event lunch is being handled by Sandy and Donna Trophy donations Insurance certificate for BaRay and Sammamish Kennel Club have been received. The budget is being finalized and will be given to the board in January. I will schedule the monthly calls starting in January. You will receive an with a phone number and code to use. If you have any questions, want to volunteer for one of the open chair positions or have an idea for an event you would like to add to the weekend, let me know. 5 Page 5 Holiday Party Combines Food, Friends, Fun The 2015 Holiday Party, once again organized by club member Connie Carroll, brought members together to remember a great year of dogs and accomplishments and to plan for an even better 2016! Huge thanks to Sheila Iturriaga Colyer for roasting a delicious turkey as the centerpiece of the celebration. She also orchestrated the annual gift-exchange, and everyone went home happy with their new presents. Members brought a delicious assortment of side dishes, salads and desserts to complete the meal. Someone left behind a an 8 x 8 glass pyrex baking dish that had a cherry cobbler inside. There was also a decorative Oneida serving spoon used to serve the cobbler. If either of these items is yours, please contact Connie Carroll at conniecarroll@comcast.net.

6 Page 6 From the Editor It has been my privilege for the past 5 years to serve as the newsletter editor for the Evergreen Golden Retriever Club. This group is rich in smart, fierce, dedicated people who want nothing more than for our breed to survive and thrive. I ve cried with you all when an older Golden passes on, and I ve cheered at the phenomenal accomplishments of our club members and dogs. What a group of talented people! I hope that, moving forward, more members will get involved in their areas of interest, not only from a competition standpoint but also from an organizational standpoint. Let s face it a lot of the people who have been our rocks, organizing events, managing people and venues, pulling it all together so that our club makes enough money to have these opportunities, are getting older. We need a new group of people who are learning the ropes so that these events can continue on in the decades ahead. If you ve just sat back and allowed everyone else to do it for you, it s time to step up! It s also time to bring new members into the club, to relieve the burden of too few doing too much and to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to our club. These are critical times for dog clubs, make no mistake about it. Be kind to new people who are just putting their toes in the water. Help them learn more, about breeding, about showing, about training, about being responsible dog folk. Be a steward, a cheerleader and an educator. Dog sport makes a wonderful and valuable addition to our communities, and people need to be reminded of that. In closing, thanks so much for encouraging me, for putting up with my frustrations, for sharing your brags and photos and stories. It has really been an honor, and I appreciate you all more than you will ever know. Best wishes for 2016 and beyond! Deborah Blair Ex-Editor!
