8 Recommendations from the Donation Committee We will be voting on this at the GM in July! The donation committee has met and recommends the following organizations to donate money totaling $ We were given some good suggestions to different organizations. We came up with four to donate to, wanted to explain some of our decisions. Morris Animal Foundation is given money from Golden Retriever Foundation for their research into hemangio sarcoma, life time studies of Golden Retrievers etc.,. If we donate to Golden Retriever Foundation, they can send the funds on to the organizations with other monies they have. So, we are recommending this year: 1) AKC Canine Health Foundation: From their website: What is Hemangiosarcoma? An aggressive and common cancer in dogs. While the cause of the disease is unknown, certain breeds (Golden Retriever, Portuguese Water Dog, Boxer, German Shepherd Dog) are considered to be high-risk. This suggests that heritable traits, while not singularly responsible, may contribute to the disease. Hemangiosarcoma can develop in any tissue or organ, but the most common primary sites for these tumors include spleen, right atrium of the heart, and the skin. Why study it? While cutaneous masses (affecting the skin) are often treatable by tumor excision, tumors affecting internal organs are associated with poorer prognosis and are almost always incurable. Hemangiosarcoma is often called the silent killer because the tumors are often not detected until the later stages of the disease, and even dogs harboring large tumors may show no clinical signs or evidence that they have a life threatening disease. Because treatments have not improved the overall survival times for dogs with this disease, tremendous efforts are being made through research funded by the CHF and its donors to gain a better understanding of the biology and progression of this disease with the goal to design new and effective approaches to treatment. Outcome An ongoing collaborative research study funded by CHF and our donors (1889-G) has led to a recent report showing promising results for a new treatment for dogs with Hemangiosarcoma. The treatment shows potential implications for human sarcoma treatments as well. CHF-Funded Study: 02217: A Novel Mechanism to Regulate the Growth of Canine Hemangiosarcoma Principal Investigator: Dr. Erin B. Dickerson, PhD; University of Minnesota Total Grant Amount: $86,206.00; Grant Period: 1/1/ /31/2017 What is the focus of this study? Recent evidence suggests that hemangiosarcoma cells rely on the metabolism of lipids or fatty acids to supply energy for tissue invasion or continued tumor growth. To obtain these lipids, hemangiosarcomas may take over the metabolic machinery of neighboring cells, forcing them to produce nutrients for the tumor cells to help them proliferate and grow. How will this study help dogs? This study will verify that tumor cells rely on lipid metabolism for growth, and determine if tumor cells alter the metabolism of fat cells to obtain cellular nutrients and accelerate tumor cell lipid metabolism. page 8

9 Identifying and exploiting a novel mechanism that may disrupt this process by inhibiting the interactions between tumor cells and cells in the tumor environment will speed clinical investigations, and ultimately lead to improved outcomes for dogs with this devastating disease. AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB CANINE HEALTH FOUNDATION, INC $ P.O. Box , Raleigh, NC ) Warrior Dog Foundation: Per their website: The Warrior Dog Foundation was founded by Mike Ritland to fill a need unmet by most other military, police and contract working dog adoption organizations. WDF is a place for retirement and rehabilitation of retired Warrior K9s slated to be euthanized. We provide a rare sanctuary of last resort and as a result, our retired K9s often stay with us for many years, and some live out their lives with us. Many of these dogs go on to live with their partners they were assigned to while in the military. Warrior Dog Foundation $ Stonebrook Pkwy #2196, Frisco, Texas ) Golden Retriever Foundation: Shine On donation: To research the cause, and recommendation for caring for our dogs and possible solution to Hemangiosarcoma in our dogs. They also donate money to the Morris Animal foundation for research specifically on Golden Retrievers, and the life time study of Golden Retrievers. Golden Retriever Foundation $ P.O. Box 3462, Omaha, NE Specifically to the Shine On section 4) Smiling Blue Skies: Here are some items they are doing: Here is what they are doing this year: Funds have supported the following: Immunotherapy for dogs with lymphoma, research led by Dr. Byram Bridle. We are supporting more than a DOZEN new trials right now, for example, Immunotherapy for dogs with melanoma; Effects of an anti-inflammatory drug on dogs undergoing mast cell tumor surgery; Predicting treatment outcomes for dogs with lymphoma surgery; Overcoming cancer cells resistance to chemotherapy in canine osteosarcoma; Predicting cancer treatment outcomes in mast cell tumors; Impact of radiation therapy on bone loss. She also sends out products to people who have dogs going through cancer, to help reduce the bleeding, etc., Many members in our club have used her in the past. 10 Dear Gaylan s Owners, Great information This is from Suzanne Bollwell-Thank you! I wanted to let everyone know that certain dog foods appear to be causing a very serious heart disease, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), in golden retrievers (and other breeds). I ve held off posting this until we had confirmation that this is not an inherited problem but is being caused by something in the foods. At least one Gaylan s dog has been affected by this but is recovering. Other goldens have not been so lucky and have died from DCM so please take this seriously. Dr Josh Stern, a cardiologist at UC Davis, is helping research this issue and will be reporting to the appropriate government agency. I ve attached his letter of guidance to owners of possibly affected dogs. Over the past three years, I have grown increasingly concerned by the amount of legumes (peas, beans, and lentils) in our dogs food. The implicated foods are grain free foods that are very high in legumes and low in taurine/taurine precursors. (Please note, meat is high in taurine/precursors so raw-fed dogs will not develop nutrition-mediated DCM.) I only know one food that has been implicated recently...acana Pork and Squash. In the past, lamb and rice foods have been shown to trigger nutritional DCM in many breeds so those foods now have higher levels of taurine added. Although I m not a big fan, Purine ProPlan has not been implicated. If you know of more implicated foods, please send them to the list. Champion Foods, the manufacturer has not been helpful in investigating this issue so as much as I have recommended Acana in the past, I no longer recommend it or Orijens, which are both made by Champion. Feel free to forward this letter to your vet and friends with goldens. ---Gayle Watkins Here is another note from Dr Josh Stern, cardiologist at UC Davis regarding the recent heart disease in goldens, including a Gaylan s dog, caused by dog food. OK here is my best attempt at explaining and answering some of the questions on these posts. 1. A very limited number of foods have been confirmed to be the primary food source in golden retrievers with DCM and low taurine levels recently. These foods have some similarities (that they source a portion of the protein from legumes, have relatively high fiber content, and generally have a fairly hefty amount of legumes which is sometimes missed because of ingredient splitting). 2. The actual reasons that these foods have been linked to this condition in the dogs is entirely unknown. The similarities in the food have led to best guess approaches, but nothing has been proven. 3. A number of the affected dogs have improved once they had their diets switched and started taurine supplementation. No dog has been supplemented long enough to have full reversal of the heart changes at this time. 4. Affected dogs are not all related. 5. The fact that this condition has been largely limited to golden retrievers eating this diet would support previous literature that perhaps golden retrievers or some golden retrievers have a higher need for taurine or taurine pre-cursors in their diets. These are the things that we are working on with our initial study and hope to report more information as it is available. 6. In the mean time, those that have dogs with this condition could feel free to share the diets that they were feeding at the time of the condition. I do not believe that there is cause for all goldens to reevaluate their feeding practices, but rather simply ensure that the ingredients on your dog s food isn t heavy on legumes. There is no reason to supplement a dog that hasn t been taurine tested. All dogs that test low on whole blood taurine as indicated in my letter (earlier in this group), should seek echocardiogram by a cardiologist as other medications may be indicated. 7. based upon the results of our small study at UCD, we may move forward with larger efforts to profile the dietary needs of golden retrievers and make larger inferences in the population. The one food that I know has been implicated is Acana Pork and squash. Other owners have come forward following the deaths of their dogs from dilated cardiomyopathy who were feeding Acana at the time their dogs took ill. More as things develop. Please read the ingredients in your dog s food. Dogs were not made to eat peas, beans, lentils or other legumes. ----Gayle Watkins page 10

Absent: Joyce MINUTES of the May 2017 Board meeting were approved as printed in the May GW. REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT: The main topics of the meeting will be to discuss the progress of the committees reviewing the Bylaws and the Breeders List Guidelines, to appoint the Nominating Committee, to discuss the ad for the 2017 National, to discuss the details of the Fun Day meeting this month, and to discuss donation of items for the National basket and to set the next General meetings. REPORT OF THE CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: 1. Approval from AKC for Agility Trials, 6/16/2017, 6/17/2017, & 6/18/2017 at Argus with the approved judges. 2. Approval from AKC for Agility Trials, 9/1/2017, 9/2/ /31/2017 at Argus with the approved judges.3. Information from AKC - please refer to eventnews@akc.org for clarification; FSS Open Show Changes; Puppy of Achievement (POA) Certificate; Clarification on requirements for judges that are judging (NOHA) National Owner Handled Series 4. List of local shows and closing dates that are offering National Owner Handled Series. REPORT OF TREASURER: (Linda) Linda reported the checking and money market amounts. They will be on the website. Problem of EGRC account tied to Deb and Frank s account still unresolved. Linda sent the information to Ed Carey to complete our taxes. Linda still needs to complete the half yearly report. Marian reviewed the May and June bank statements. Thank you letter was sent to Lori Langton, but returned as she has moved and we do not have her current address. REPORT OF COMMITTEES: Event Committees: AGILITY TRIALS-(Joyce) June 16,17, The June trials went off smoothly. Linda has completed the profit loss statement and we are nicely in the black by about $2,600. Financial report will be on the website. SPECIALTY 2017: (Shari) August 18, 2017 : Things are going well though a few spaces do need to be filled with volunteers someone to organize the workers lunch and someone to take the tents to Argus after the OKC show (if someone not found we will have to take them down Friday evening and not available for Saturday and Sunday). Donna Day and Sheila have filled most of the trophy donation spots. JUDGES SELECTION COMMITTEE The committee is still on hold as they are not able to ask judges until after our 2017 Specialty when we will decide the date of the 2018 Specialty., HUNT TEST: (Linda) July1-2, Test went very well. We reduced the Master test to one stake since we had just under 60 entries. That made for a longer day, but saved us money on judges expenses which were increased by a larger than anticipated bird bill. This was needed as our original supplier could not fulfill our needs and we had to get one from Montana, who did transport the birds here. Preliminary figures indicate we will be in the black. The Board directed Linda to count the cost of the wingers purchased as a capital expense, rather than going to the test itself. The judges were particularly complimentary to our kid workers who really hustled. TRACKING: (Sandy) No test in 2017 WC/WCX (Linda) The Flat Coated Retriever Club will hold the WC/WCX test on September 9, The Board discussed the possibility of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club joining with us as their test is similar to the WC. Nancy will be talking with them about this. HOLIDAY PARTY: December 2, 2017 page 12

13 SKC (BOOTH/MEET THE BREED) (Sandy) We need new chairs for the booth. HEALTH CLINIC - BJ has volunteered to do a health clinic. She is talking with Dr. Sullivan. Will be in September or October. Finance Committees BUDGET COMMITTEE (Linda) DONATION COMMITTEE (Shari) The vote on the donation committee recommendations will be at the July general meeting. Club Affairs Committees: MEMBERSHIP (Sandy) The Board discussed whether to include the attendance at the general meetings in the minutes, so members could keep track. It was decided that a better method would be to have a spread sheet available on the website so members would only have to go to one place to review their meetings attended. Sandy will work with Bev to see how this could be done. John and Beth McRae will be voted on for membership at the general meeting. GOLDEN WEST (Ane) Ane will publish the GW about July 18 or 19. WEBSITE (Shari) The website has been updated. PUPPY REFERRAL (Claudia) RESCUE (Marian) MEETINGS Shari, Ane, and Sandy met last Saturday to organize the Fun Day, July 27 in Bothell. They will bring a pop up, table and Subway sandwich. Members will bring salad and dessert. Dogs invited. A For Fun Obedience ring set up, people will exchange dogs. Other games planned. August, no meeting. September, Sept. 28, with guest speaker on study for longevity of dogs. (Dr. Daniel Edward Lee Promislow) Location TBD. October is annual meeting, Golden Oldies, probably at Sharon Colvin s on October 26. AWARDS Nancy has found the lost agility trophy. MOTION: to convert the trophy that was bought to replace it to a new award to honor the Member of the Year. APROVED. Nancy shared the protocols that WSOTC uses for its similar award and EGRC will borrow from theirs. Details will be published. CCA (Claudia) Chair is Caroline McCormick. Date is October 14, 2017 at Sharon Colvin s. Judges are Ken Mathews, Hach Hatchtel, and Judy Slayton. GAYLE WATKINS SEMINAR (Claudia) Claudia has printed flyers and will distribute at Puyallup and other shows. SUNSHINE (Nancy) Sandy will send a card to Bobbi Miller for the serious injury that Gemma suffered (Susie is out of town) UNFINISHED BUSINESS: 1. The committee that is working on reviewing the breeder s list guidelines will report at the next Board meeting. 2. Nancy and Ane have worked on the bylaws, but there was insufficient time to discuss in full. Nancy went over some of the things they thought needed to be addressed, such as reducing the minimum number of feneral meetings from 8 to 5 (plus the Annual meeting), reducing the number of at large Board members from 4 to 2, making some changes about when notices should be mailed about various things and making some changes in the nominating committee schedule. Board members should review the bylaws prior to the next Board meeting. NEW BUSINESS: The Board discussed possible candidates for the Nominating Committee, but the hour was too late to make phone calls, so Ane will call in the next few days. ADJOURNMENT: 9:23 p.m. Respectfully submitted Nancy Light,RECORDING SECRETARY EGRC page 13
