2 Jessie Page 2 The Rescue Report It was a beautiful, sunny day, April 12 th and still all 49 dogs registered for the Uveitis clinic showed up and all but one were on time or early. Of course, the one who was late was the last dog scheduled but despite that, the staff finished when expected and the day was deemed a huge success. Of the 49 dogs, 5 were diagnosed with Golden Retriever Uveitis. Of those 5 dogs, one was an year old foster dog named Chief. Another was my 8 year old Charlie and interestingly both Charlie and Chief were told that it was caught very early. In Charlie s case, this is his fourth screening. Both are good examples of why the dogs should be screened repeatedly and into their senior years. Two of the other positive dogs were dogs adopted through EGRR. Thank you, BJ Modrell, for again organizing this very important clinic and also for working at it to insure that things would run smoothly. As a side note, Dr. Sullivan will be speaking on genetic eye problems in Goldens at EGRR s Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 4, and everyone is invited to attend. Rescue also had a very good weekend, with four dogs being adopted. You will remember from last month s report that we were inundated with dogs so moving four on to their forever families was a big accomplishment. Prior to this, on April 9 th, EGRR was asked to take a bonded pair of siblings, 6-year-old Jessie and Razor. The owner is moving to London

3 Page 3 Razor and needed them out by April 15 th. The volunteer who normally does temperament tests in the Everett area was unavailable so I posted our need on the EGRC Yahoo list. A short time later I received an from Susan Babich that she could meet these dogs and in the time frame needed. That took care of our first challenge. As I scrambled trying to think of a foster home that could handle these dogs and coming up with nothing, I received a phone call from Ron Colyer that he and Sheila could foster this pair. Phew! What a relief that was! Susan did the temperament test the next day and did a great job, complete with pictures. This was all forwarded to Ron and Sheila so that they would have an idea of what to expect. The dogs were delivered the afternoon of the 15 th. During his report last night, Ron said that the two had settled in nicely and will get a much needed grooming this weekend. I was and still am truly overwhelmed with this support and want to say to Susan, Ron and Sheila how much we all appreciate your help. Thank you! Marcia MacDonald, President New Member Application V ida Piera Has applied for a Non-Voting membership. Vida volunteered at the EGRC booth at the Seattle Kennel Club show in March. She is sponsored by Joyce Palmer and Steve Hughes. She is already a volunteer with EGRR and is interested in agility and obedience. She is willing to help with the health clinic and the newsletter. Vida has had Goldens since 1988 although she doesn't have any right now. She loves the Golden temperament and beauty. She also volunteers at the Tacoma Humane Society where she walks dogs.

5 Page 5 EGRC is gearing up for our 2014 Specialty, being held in conjunction with the Nisqually Kennel Club shows on August 8, 9 and 10. The theme "Golden Carnival" provides a springboard into a festive and fun time.. All three days of the show feature breederjudges in the conformation ring. On Friday, August 8, the Independent Specialty judge is Connie Gerstner-Miller; Sweepstakes will be judged by Cindy Garcia. On Saturday, the Designated Specialty judge is Gloria Kerr; the Sweepstakes judge is Ramsey Fadiman. On Sunday, the Supported Entry will be judged by Cheryl Shaw. There will be four obedience trials over the weekend. On Friday, the Obedience and Rally judge is Don Rennick. There are two trials on Saturday in conjunction and one on Sunday. The judges on Saturday are James Thomson obedience; Theresa Temple Rally. The second obedience trial judge is Don Rennick. On Sunday the Obedience judge is Theresa Temple and Rally judge is James Thomson. All classes leading to a title will be offered, and all breeds are eligible. Friday everyone can celebrate at the "Welcome to the Carnival" potluck dinner, accompanied by a very special event for those of you willing to take the challenge -- the Wet Dog Contest. There will be an awesome trophy for the winner! More details on the contest coming soon. Reserved grooming is available to the first 32 people who send in their info and check for a 10' x 10' space. Reserved Grooming is $60 for the three days, and spaces must be reserved for all three days. The reserved grooming area includes power and is just steps from the ring. There will also be very limited free grooming with power. To reserve your space, contact Ron Colyer at R_Colyer@yahoo.com. 7 Page 7 In his first foray into field events, Jury picked up his first two Started legs at the Cascade Hunting Retriever Club's inaugural tests. With compliments from the judges, he nailed the marks and delivered nicely to hand. Now 14 months old, he is my Tiki's son and also known as Skylight's The Jury Is In, Can TD. Hope to have his SHR title by the time this hits print. ~Nancy Light Sweetgold Cleared For Takeoff TN-N, CCA, "Jett," earned his first agility title on March 28, NADAC Novice Tunnelers. He had three qualifying runs in three tries. The last two runs were so fast that he actually made Elite course time. He LOVES the tunnels! ~Gwen Sieben

8 Page 8 PHOEBE (Rainbow s Glenlaurel All That Jazz CGC) 9 May 1996 ~ 19 March 2014 Phoebe came to Glenlaurel when we were still reeling in sorrow from the way-too-early loss of her Grandma Chloë. She healed our broken hearts and brought joy & laughter to our lives, as she did to practically everyone who met her throughout her almost 18 years. She ruled our roost with a velvet paw and class - comforting, commanding, clowning - whatever was needed at the moment. Sort of a canine version of Mother Teresa, Jackie Kennedy and Carol Burnett, all rolled in one. We will always cherish the memory of her prancing around the Veterans ring at the glorious age of 17 at the EGRC Specialty, receiving a standing ovation and people chanting her name. It's hard to believe that this sweet girl who has been such a huge part of our lives for so very long is really gone. We miss her terribly. Her reunion with Chase, Lake & Kenna at the Bridge must have been a joy to behold. We hold you in our hearts, precious one, until we can be together again. Angel Audette Judges Selection Hach Hachtel The Objectives of the Evergreen Golden Retriever Club a) To preserve the structure, soundness, temperament, natural abilities and personality of the Golden Retriever as described in the breed standard and to do all possible to bring their natural abilities and qualities to perfection. b) To urge members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed as approved by the AKC as the only standard of excellence by which the Golden Retriever shall be judged. c) To protect and advance the interest of the breed by encouraging sportsmanlike conduct at dog shows, field events, obedience trials and all functions and events where EGRC is being represented. d) To conduct sanctioned matches and specialty shows, field events, obedience trials and tracking under the rules of AKC and e) To educate members and the public in all aspects of owning a Golden Retriever. General Information General Meetings are held on the 4 th Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Check the calendar on the web site at The Board of Directors meets on the 1 st Tuesday of each month and members wishing to attend must call the President to state their business. Application for Membership: Prospective members must attend two meetings or functions before application of intent to join is accepted. Application forms may be obtained from Board members, the Membership Chair, or from the web site. Change of Address.
