2 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION 2018 Rabbit Project Requirement Guide Project Information Please note that project information can change. Members are responsible for reading correspondence including newsletters and letters. Project Book: Your book will consist of a packet. Please note that you will need to have one book for your market rabbits and one book for your breeding/show rabbits. The book guidelines for completion are reflected by the score sheet in the front cover. A new book must be completed each year. Members can purchase the book for $2.00 from their club advisor, or download the book and print it for free at Members who choose to take the Pet Rabbit project book #227are not permitted to compete in the Jr. Fair Classes. Resource Guides are a one-time purchase for projects. Members should plan on purchasing this guide for reference and to study for skillathon. Quality Assurance: Quality Assurance is a state required training program for any 4-H or FFA member who is exhibiting market livestock at the Jr. Fair. Dates for 2018 Include: Sunday, March 4 starting at 2:00pm, Thursday, May 31 starting at 7:00pm at the Jr. Fair Building. Rabbit Quality Assurance will be Saturday, April 21 starting at 9:00am in the Jr. Fair Building. Test Out: Members eligible for test out it will be offered starting at 1 hour prior to the beginning at the Jr. Fair Building. Test out is offered to youth or as of January 1 of the current year. Youth who need special accommodations for testing should contact the Extension Office for details. Quality Assurance Certification MUST be completed no later than June 10, Failure to complete will result in disqualification from the Jr. Fair for Possession Deadline: June 1, of current year for all breeding animals. 35 days before the start of the fair for meat pen and single fryer. Mandatory Tagging/Weigh-In Date Rabbit Tattoing on August 11, 2018 from 7:30am-10:30am at the Rabbit Barn. Fair Weigh In date will be on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Book & Interview Judging: Judging will be completed on Monday, July 30 th, 2018 from 3:00pm-7:00pm at the Jr. Fair Building on the Fairgrounds. Times are scheduled by appointment. 3 Members who do not complete their judging at this time will need to have their Advisor submit their Project Book Grade and Interview Grade and plan to attend a makeup session for their Skillathon for completion. Make up grades from advisors are due no later than Friday, August 10, Exhibit Limit: Limit of 1 Single Fryer, 1 Meat Pen, 1 Doe & Litter, and 6 Show Rabbits. Members who wish to sell their market rabbits in the livestock sale are required to complete a breed/show rabbit project. Members who do not complete AND show will forfeit their eligibility. Fair Entry Deadline You will be able to enter your projects for exhibition at the Fair. Please note that the entry deadline is August 4, Entries are made through a website and information will be mailed directly to your home. During the summer months, a livestock newsletter will be sent out with tips, suggestions, and information regarding what to expect at the Jr. Fair. This will serve as a guide to Fair preparation and what to expect the week of fair. Weight/Age/Breed Requirements: Meat pen consists of (3) three rabbits. Single fryer is (1) one rabbit. Each rabbit must be between 4-6lbs. Breed/Show rabbits must be a minimum of 3 months of age. Health Requirements: N/A PLEASE NOTE: If youth are interested in the 2points extra credit, they can write information about their rabbit breed of choice in place of the breeding records. We would suggest 2-3 nice paragraphs about the history of your breed, what it is known for, and what it should look like for judging Livestock Project Requirements

4 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION 2018 Livestock Project Judging Day Information Age divisions for judging are as follows: (Your age as of January 1 of the current year) Juniors 8-10 Intermediate Senior Station 1: Project Book 20 points Present your completed 2018 Livestock Project Book to the judge. The judge will review your records and completed project book. Point values for each section are included in the front of your project book. Judges will award points for degree in which the book is completed. The entire book (with exception of any bonus sections) must be completed. Age/experience will be taken into consideration when giving points. Station 2: Interview Station 20 points You will have an interview for the project you are exhibiting. You will be asked questions based on your experience level. You will earn points for each correct question. Sample interview questions are included with this guide. All questions are based from your project books and the Resource Handbook or are general Tell me about your animal questions. Station 3: Quality Assurance 20 points Information for this station will be based on 2018 Good Production Practices #4 or #5. Youth will be asked to answer questions about a Medication Label or Feed Label. This information will be/was covered in Quality Assurance Sessions and those who have tested out should study accordingly. Station 4: Skillathon Year A 20 points Parts of the Animal: Using your resource book and/or printed packet study the parts of the animal. Note that for full points Juniors will only need to get ¼ correct, Intermediate will need to get ½ and Seniors will need to get ¾ correct. Station 5: Skillathon Year A 20 points Terminology: Matching worksheet to be provided the day of skillathon to fill out. Please note that the key can be downloaded online and terms can be located in your resource book. Please note that poultry will need to utilize their key as necessary due to lack of resource book at this time. Total Grade is out of 100 points. Incomplete grades are not eligible for exhibition in the Jr. Fair. Other grades can be salvaged if you take the time to contact the office. It is YOUR responsibility to fix your grades, not the Extension Office s responsibility. What is gestation and how long is the gestation for rabbits? days. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 66) 2. How old are rabbits when they first open their eyes? days. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 69) 3. When should the nest box be placed in the hutch? 28 days after the doe is bred. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 68) 4. What are the symptoms of a doe with pneumonia? Symptoms of pneumonia include 1) difficulty breathing, 2) bluish lips, 3) poor hair coat, 3) low rate of weight gain, 5) generally poor overall appearance, and 6) sudden death. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 59) 5. Rabbits are known as prey animals. What does that mean? Rabbits are prey for many species. Their protective instincts help keep them safe. They are easily startled and frightened. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 103) 6. In which ear should rabbits be tattooed? Left ear. (page 42) 7. What is the best way to keep rabbits from contracting disease? Practicing strict preventative measures, including establishing and practicing a strict quarantine policy, examining rabbits daily for any signs of illnesses or injuries, and taking quick action to prevent problems from becoming more serious. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 53) 8. Rabbits are naturally nervous and subject to stress and injury when they become frightened. Name at least two things people can do to avoid frightening them? Locate the hutch out of reach of predators Make sure the hutch is sturdily constructed. Avoid making quick movements. Construct a fence around the hutch. Speak before walking into a rabbit s view. What is mastitis and what can be done to treat it? Mastitis is an infection of the mammary system that affects lactating does. Infected animals should be treated with antibiotics immediately. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 58) 2. What causes mastitis? A highly contagious bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 58) 3. When should the nesting box be removed from the cage? Between days. (page 69) 4. Name some diseases rabbits can get. Abscesses (infections), coccidiosis (parasites), ear cankers (parasites), enterotoxemia (intestinal bacteria), pneumonia, mange, mastitis, myxomatosis (big head disease), pinworms, pneumonia, ringworm, snuffles, sore hocks, vent disease, viral hemorrhagic disease (VHD), weepy eye, wry neck, and red urine. (Rabbit Resource handbook, pages 57-62) 5. Name two causes of losses in newborn litters. Doe is disturbed or frightened while giving birth. Doe does not have enough water. Predators nearby cause doe to kindle prematurely, to jump around in the nest box and accidently crush her kits, or to eat them. Doe abandons kits that have been handled. Doe fails to produce milk and kits starve. Kits escape from nesting box. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, pages 68-69) 6. How do you determine the sex of rabbits? To sex a rabbit, first turn the rabbit on its back and gently restrain. Apply pressure to the genital opening by using your index finger to push the tail down and toward the rabbit s back. It is important to keep the tail steady. With the thumb of the same hand in a position slightly above the genital opening, apply just enough pressure to expose the reddish mucus membrane. In a male, the genital opening will form a round protrusion. In a female, the opening will form a slit. (Rabbit Resource Handbook, page 65) 7. What is weaning and when are rabbits typically weaned? Weaning is the process of permanently removing a young rabbit from its mother s cage and care. All young rabbits should be weaned by 60 days of age. Name two reproductive challenges associated with breeding and maintaining a new litter? Why is it important to clean out the nesting box and remove it in a timely manner? To prevent disease and to keep fresh bedding so the box is not slippery which can cause deformed legs. (page 69) 3. What are ways that can result in a crossbreed rabbit? Breeding two different breed rabbits or one already crossbreed rabbit with any other breed. (page 72) 4. What is out crossing? The mating of unrelated rabbits from different lines within the same breed. (page 71) 5. How many chromosomes does each rabbit have in a cell? 44 or 22 pairs. (page 70) 6. How do you determine the sex of rabbits? Hold rabbit on its back with left hand, hold front legs forward alongside its head. With the right hand place your thumb around the rabbit s hind leg and use your index and forefinger to depress tail backward and downward. Use your thumb to gently depress the area in from of the sex organs to expose the reddish mucous membrane. In the buck, the organ protrudes as a rounded tip. Step 3: Disinfect the tattoo pliers, the letters and numbers, and the rabbit s left ear with alcohol. Step 4: Restrain the rabbit and puncture the prepared area with the tattoo pliers. Step 5: Apply ink or paste to the ear and rub it into the holes with a brush or finger. Step 6: Clean excess ink around the tattoo with alcohol. 14 RABBIT Medication Label/Treatment Activity Hopper, the New Zealand White rabbit you plan to exhibit at the fair in August, has ear mites. The ear is all crusted up and oozing. Today the veterinarian has diagnosed the rabbit s problem as ear canker and gave Hopper an initial treatment at the time of the examination. The veterinarian has left additional, prescribed medication with you to continue the treatment. The directions on the bottle instruct you to treat the rabbit with 3 drops of medicine in each ear for 4 days. You are to begin treatment tomorrow. Remember, your veterinarian treated the rabbit today, June 7 th and you will treat it four more days as directed.
