NEW FOR 2018: SKILLATHON To enhance the learning experience for youth exhibiting livestock at the fair. Youth are required to attend and participate in at least one skillathon to complete their project and be eligible for exhibition at the Marion County Fair. In order to exhibit at the Ohio State Fair, all county requirements must be met. An alternative completion option is available for those that cannot attend the appropriate skillathon on June 20, by contacting the Extension Office to set up an appointment. 2 To be eligible for Outstanding Market Exhibitor, youth must participate in each skillathon for the desired specie. For example, if Margo wants to be eligible for both market lamb and market swine OME, she must participate in both the sheep and swine skillathon. A fee of $1 per tag will be charged to exhibitors bringing more than two animals. GOAT FAIR ENTRY DEADLINE Market, Tuesday, May 1 Dairy, Specialty, Boer Goats, Friday, June Family Rule Beef, Dairy/Dairy Feeder, Goat, Sheep Departments A family (siblings residing at the same address) may enter/tag up to the maximum number of animals for that department. These animals will be tagged or entered under the family name. Family entry forms for animals that are tagged/weighed in will be provided at the weigh in. This includes market beef, dairy feeders, market goats and market sheep. Family entry forms for breeding beef, breeding dairy and breeding sheep will be included in the Project Information pages. Each individual exhibitor will submit an entry form with the number of animals he or she is planning to show (up to the department maximum). Upon entering the fairgrounds, each exhibitor must declare which animal(s) he or she will be showing. No changes will be allowed after this time. The animals declared must have been entered on the family weigh-in/entry form and tagged/weighed if required. This rule allows for exhibitors to show the animal that is most suited to their skill level. It also allows an exhibitor to still be able to show and sell an animal should one of theirs die or be hurt prior to the fair. 2

GENERAL RULES FOR MARION COUNTY FAIR GOAT DEPARTMENT 1. No person shall judge any animal in which he/she has a financial interest or which is owned by members of his/her immediate family. Financial interest shall be defined as an ownership or part ownership of an animal. 2. Goats may not be penned until goats are health checked and this is verified by the Junior Fair superintendent checking in entries in the goat department. 3. The U.S. Scrapies Eradication Program requires all female goats must have an identifying farm identification tattoo or scrapies ear tag present upon arrival at the fair gate. LaMancha s need to be tattooed under the tail. 4. A doe may compete only once in an age class during the individual show. 5. Any doe 24 months of age or over that has never freshened shall not be shown. 6. All goats must be parasite free, free of abbesses or open wounds, and disease on arrival at the fair. 7. Pee Wee showmanship is for youth 8 years of age and younger, not in 4-H. 8. Artificial coloring will be grounds for disqualification. Illegible tattoos or tattoos inconsistent with registration papers will result in disqualification. 9. Doe kidding on June 1 of the current year or after shall not be brought to the fair and exhibited. 10. All exhibitors must check their animals and have pens cleaned by 9:00 a.m. daily DAIRY GOAT INFORMATION Dairy Goat Rules 1. All dairy goats must be clipped. 2. All dairy goat exhibitors must wear all white. 3

4 3. Any doe showing signs of Boer breeding must be entered in Boer classes. 4. When does are required to be in place prior to the day they are judged, there shall be a pre-show milk-out, with the date, exact location, and the hour of the milk-out stated. If the exhibitor is unable to be there at that time, he/she must milk-out upon arrival at the show under the same supervision required at the official milk-out. Any doe not milked out according to these specifics shall be barred from the show. 5. The show committee or its agents shall check all animals after they are milked by the exhibitor during the pre-show milk-out. The person doing the checking shall not draw milk. 6. Any doe under 24 months of age that has never freshened shall compete in the Junior Doe show. 7. Any doe 24 months of age or over that has never freshened shall not be shown 8. With the exception of Jr. and Sr. kids, ages of all dairy goat classes will be calculated as of the day of the show. 9. All dairy goat animals with natural horns (not disbudded or dehorned) shall not be shown. 10. All junior dairy goat exhibitors shall present a certificate of registration for each registered or recorded grade animal shown. The certificate of registration from the animal shall stand in the name of the individual or partnership making the entry of which the exhibitor is a partner. Stamped duplicates, indicating that the application for registry is pending in the ADGA or AGS offices, will be accepted in lieu of the registration certificate only for kids less than six months of age as of the day of the junior show. Certificates of registration will be checked and the exhibitor must be able to produce it when called upon to do so. Breed, name of animal, and registry number must be listed on the entry card for all registered and recorded grade dairy goat does. If registry number is not available prior to the show entry, write pending. Registry number must be available prior to the show and correspond with the name and birth date. 11. Utility breed class animals are not eligible for grand and reserve champion honors. 5 ANGORA AND PYGMY GOAT RULES All goats must have legible tattoos or other means of permanent identification consistent with its registration certificate or the animal will be disqualified. If the animal has a micro-chip as its means of permanent identification, the exhibitor is responsible for providing a micro-chip reader. Market goats may either be a wether or a doe. (Market does must follow general rule #3). 2. All market goats must weigh a minimum of 50 pounds, and must be born after November 1 through May 1 of the current year, and must be in owner s possession by May 1. They must have all milk teeth in place. (Reminder weigh-in and tagging day for market goats is May 1 from 6:00 7:30 p.m. at the Marion County Fairgrounds. May weigh up to 5 goats. May only show two of those five. Do not have to declare which two until brought to the fair. 3. All market goats with natural horns must be one of the following: disbudded, dehorned, or tipped. Tipped is defined as: the end of the horn must be squared off at least ½ in diameter or larger. 4. All market goats showing any evidence of testicular tissue or recent castration operation, which is not healed, are not eligible for competition in any market goat class or to sell. 5. All market goats must be clipped from the knees up. 6. Exhibitor may show two market goats but only one animal may be sold. 7. Market goats will be weighed only once at the Marion County Fair. 8. All market animals must receive an A or B grade to be included in the sale. 9. Underweight market animals may show, but may not compete for Grand or Reserve Champion Market Goat honors, nor will they be included in the Jr. Fair Livestock Sale. 10. A rate of gain contest will be conducted based on the results from the mandatory weigh-in on May 1 and the weigh-in at the beginning of the fair. Winner will be determined by the best rate of gain. 6 1. All Boer goats must be registered in the Herdbook of a recognized association. Recognized associations include the ABGA, USBGA, Canadian BGA, and the IBGA. The original registration certificate is required. Animals must be registered in the name of the exhibitor or partnership and must have been owned by the exhibitor on or before May 1, current year. 2. All goats must have legible tattoos or other means of permanent identification consistent with its registration certificate or the animal will be disqualified. If the animal has a micro-chip as its means of permanent identification, the exhibitor is responsible for providing a micro-chip reader. 3. Birth dates, as listed on the registration certificate, will be used to determine the class divisions. The show date will be the base date in computing all ages. Take the show date and count back to the birth date of the goat to determine the age and the class of the animal. 4. All animals in registered animal classes must be registered as purebred, full blood, or percentage blood Boer goats. Percentage doe classes are for goats 50% to 88% Boer. Full blood and purebred classes are for does that are 93.7% (15/16 blood) and higher. All unregistered does showing a Boer influence will exhibit in the utility class for Boers. 5. Any goat showing any pronounced defect or abnormality will be barred from the show ring in any of the breeding classes. 6. The owner has the right to demand the return of the animal if the Lessee is not providing proper care as stipulated in the leasing agreement. 5. 21 RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MARION COUNTY GOAT QUEEN, KING, PRINCESS AND PRINCE. 1. The Marion County Goat Queen, King, Princess and Prince are to be free to pass out ribbons during the Marion County Jr. Goat Show (when not showing own animals) and placards at the Livestock Sale (Goat). 2. Shall be free for press, TV and radio and public appearances for goat promotion at any time during the year. 3. The Queen, King, Princess and Prince shall conduct themselves in lady and gentlemen like manners at all times while representing the goat industry, especially so while wearing their sashes. (No short shorts or revealing clothing, no smoking, drinking, profanity or other unbecoming or rowdy behavior, etc.) A sash and tiara will be provided for the Queen and Princess and sashes only for the King and Prince. In the event the designated people are unable to fulfill their duties, they must notify the committee chairman immediately so the next person in line can be contacted.
