4 A rmdale Poll Dorset Studs ~ History & Progression The Armdale Dorset Stud was founded in In 1957 the entire Dorset Horn Stud was transferred to the Poll Dorset Stud. The Armdale Park Stud was founded in In 1988 Armdale and Armdale Park purchased the well known Austeco Stud from South Australia. The studs have grown from there to be recognised as one of the largest and most successful studs in the industry today. The best young ram is retained each year, and together with semen & carefully selected rams purchased from outside studs over the years, the high standard within the breeding program has been maintained. The aim has always been to produce big, fast growing, well muscled sheep that are structurally correct, with balanced figures. We have enjoyed another busy and successful year on the show circuit confirming our position in the stud industry. Highlights throughout 2013 have included taking out Reserve Champion Ram & Supreme Champion Exhibit with the champion ewe, at both Gundagai & Canberra Royal Shows, Reserve Champion Ram & Ewe and 1st mixed pair for the second year in a row at Cowra, and at the Bendigo ASBA we also received 1st in the mixed pair, Champion Ewe, and Supreme Interbreed Prime Lamb Exhibit for the second year in a row. Our clients continue to be at the forefront of breeding, with their commercial lambs topping Wagga Wagga Livestock Market on a regular basis. As we continue to produce early maturing sires, many clients have been able to sell the season s first sucker lambs on a regular basis, but as a whole, clients have been able to breed for any specific market, with their lambs highly sought after by meat buyers who recognize the high quality produced from the Armdale Studs genetics. Both studs use Stockscan as a performance recording tool as it is the only one of its kind to provide accurate measurements of individual sheep including eye muscle area. These figures are provided on all our sale rams and provide a guide for buyers who select on certain traits. Garry describes this year s draft as one of the most even drafts of rams to be offered, with the rams presenting well right down to the last lot on offer. With many of our clients having already sold two thirds of their sucker lambs and averaging around $140, we strongly believe rams of this quality are a great asset to any commercial enterprise wanting to boost the returns they receive.
